The irony, when they say it's just journalism but then can't handle that it isn't art. Those would be the "get closer, small camera, 28mm, telephoto is for cowards durrrrr" streetfags. If you dissociate from that, you're literally not a street photographer. It's just photography with streets nearby.

Landscapes without heavy, and specifically creative editing and low levels of intent are similarly not art or very low art (see: boomer photowalk get-togethers where they all take the same photo of the same rock at sunset). Like there's a line between walk and snaps and "i want specifically a crying hobo on a cloudy day", there's a line between tourist snapping in nature and "i want a photo of fog lifting off the trees with no clear sky in the frame to evoke a feeling of desolation and serenity". It shows when there's a difference or you did a bad job.

I am far more interested in taking street photos now, I have spent enough time doing landscape. It's fucking boring. It looks the same. Unless you are graced with a particularly nice rare sunset/rise or some interesting weather condition it's fucking soul crushingly boring. Cities are more interesting to me, probably because I don't live in one. So, I visit cool cities, and walk around taking pictures of shit. I honestly think there is some really good street photographers shooting right now but a whole ton of people are basically shooting for their own personal aesthetic. They buy a rangefinder or something that looks like a range finder and a Carhartt beanie because it's more about "being a photographer" than wanting to take great pictures. A good street photographer dresses like a dad on vacation so no one notices them. They also don't really have time to make tiktoks or youtube videos cause they actually care about making good work.

Because the work that defined "street photography" is primarily associated with a handful of older jewish men from new york being actively disrespectful and creepy, and then it later became associated with trust fund gearfags copying them 1 for 1 and thinking leicas are magical talent enhancing devices (copying people who didn't really have talent). Neither is a well respected group.

On 4chan its associated with incel /r9k/ regulars trying to prove they don't have social anxiety by... being actively creepy and disrespectful, a hard swing towards the other problem with their personality. Usually with a fujifilm, a lot of underexposure, and either backs of heads or people walking into photos of buildings. It keeps on getting worse for what originally started as french and british fucks snapping roads from their balconies.

I wouldn’t call maier a street photographer though, even though she took a lot of photos on the streets. Plus she lacked that typical narcissism that most street shitters seem to have, what with never sharing her photos with anyone. More of a slice of life photog I’d say.
