This thread is dedicated to the discussion of art side of photography.

General topics might include

>Great photographers, photobooks, history of photography, movements in photography, world photography, classic photobooks, photography literature, exhibitions, photography canon, magnum collective, photo festivals, art criticism, photographer's biographies, photobook reviews etc.
>>
>>4358002
Are classical styles of photography more or less relevant these days? It seems like enough people hate modern art photography that there could be a resurgence in more classical styles. The only problem I see with it actually happening is that the majority of people who reject modern art have nothing to contribute to raise "good" art onto the same pedestal as bigger and older publishers like magnum or whoever.
>>
>>4358004
>It seems like enough people hate modern art photography
If 4chan, Reddit, or any such was included in your sampling then that's going to be little but a bunch of angsty teens trying to look smart and cultured, or failing that to make someone angry.
>>
>Are classical styles of photography more or less relevant these days?
Those never went away. People who like classical artforms and take inspiration from them actually make stuff based on those frameworks. People who whine about modern and offer no alternative are artistically illiterate schmucks who have never been to a museum and in real life would call you gay for engaging with art.

Real artists don't give a fuck. They would produce shit that they want to. And if they want to take shots at someone they do it by doing the opposite and tell them to stuff it.

There is already a resurgence, but "art" is so nepotistic and rife with money laundering you'd never see it among the big (RICH.) names.

"Art" has always been like this. It's why anyone who is actually interesting isn't discovered until after they die.

>"Art" has always been like this. It's why anyone who is actually interesting isn't discovered until after they die.
Not true in majority of cases. For example Da Vinci, Dante, Keats, Byron, Shelley, Tolstoy, Rembrandt, Tarkovsky, Bresson etc. were famous in their time.

The Pond by John Gossage

This book is shilled by redditors as "heckin finding upcummies in the mundane". it is a deeply pessimistic book about the sheer monotony and disappointment of everyday life. NOTHING EVER HAPPENS. That is the message. You who go on walks and all you find is those broken branches, trash, muddy water and pathways that go this and that way, sometimes there is a house or a bird or a fence or tree or sky and clouds. That's it really. That's how monotonous and retarded life is. You look at shit, it's one damn thing after another. There are many pathways, all of them are as nonsensical as each one of them. You take a walk and you always go to that mundane shitty spot, you look around, probably release a fart in peace because no one is watching you and then you head back home utterly buckbroken by disappointment and meaninglessness of heckin life.

Also this book created the genre of "just an autist with a camera and looking at shit".

"Walking is the best medicine"
-Hippocrates

"The photographer with his camera, walking." That is the internal revolution that no one talks about. The walking photographer go from internal to external. He is the Body first. Photography deals with the surfaces and with a world that is already full. Photographer negates and negates until his desired out come. Photographer doesn't start with a blank page. That's his punishment, that's his redemption. Photography is the meditation, a temporary release from the torture of the self. To lose oneself in the space, to pluck coherence out of the chaotic world, to overcome Time and become automatic and natural even for a second, that's the catch!

No doubt photography is a meditation.

Solomon D. Butcher dump incooming

>Nebraska photographer Solomon D. Butcher produced, over the course of nearly forty years, a record of the settlement of the Great Plains that is both unique and remarkable. Born in 1856 in what was to become the state of West Virginia after the Civil War, Butcher came with his family to the plains of Nebraska in 1880.

>This restless young man soon found that he was not up to the rigors of a homesteader’s life. He had tasted just enough of it, however, to develop a profound admiration for those with the grit to survive and prosper on the Nebraska prairies. In 1886 Butcher was struck with an idea that was inspired. Realizing that the period of settlement would soon be over, he set out to create a photographic history of pioneer life. Between 1886 and 1912 Butcher generated a collection of more than 3,000 photographs.

>Though he died in 1927 believing himself a total failure, Solomon D. Butcher’s work has survived to become the most important chronicle of the saga of homesteading in America.

I don't see much art but he had enough sensibility and was very focused on his style and subjects, that's pretty hard to achieve but i suppose because he wasn't meddled with tons of information he could achieve that.
>believing himself a total failure
Most good artists die like this, the point is to surpass the feeling and keep doing what you like.
>>
>>4362258
>I don't see much art
his staging and compositional balance is unmatched, that's enough show of art for me. but yeah i can see your point and i don't think art was his point. compare him to other documentary photographers who shoot straight and rarely put this much effort. to contact the farmers and then convincing them to pose and then imaging staging and camera position, also i think these are glass plates. man was an absolute master

people like him should be shot

real artists don't give a shit about definitions or what is or isn't art. they use the medium to say whatever they want to say. imagine living such a pathetic life where you have nothing to say but you still want to say it so they end up circlejerking around such linguistic bullshit.

If you don't know how to not look yourself in the mirror then you can't be a photographer. That's a fact. The world works on occult logic.
>>
What is going on with the websites of photographers and instagram shit. The hurdles you have to go through to save photos because they deliberately lock their shit down so normies can't get them, why? And then the photos themselves are compressed to shit and at low resolutions.

Wouldn't you want your photos to look their best? Isn't the goal of fucking sharing the photos you take that people like and save them?

His composition are impeccable. I can see your point. But there is something about the context of them being the last remnants of the "old world" and penetration of modernity. Like these kids >>4372552 and their costumes. Have you seen Parajanov's films? These remind me of that but in this case they are "real".

This shit's so heavy-handed, tacky, and desperate. That's how you know it's photographic "art". This is what you need to do as a visual "artist" if you don't know how to paint or sculpt.
>>
>>4376202
This wall between staged photography and showing that you're an insecure failed painter/sculptor is extremely thin.

That's you projecting your worship of mechanical skills.

Mechanical skill is animal. Mental skill is human. It's the puma that moves without sound and leaps with precision. It's the wolf that runs quick and turns on a dime. But it's the man who watches them tire before killing the lot of them in their sleep so he can lay out a productive farm.

So thus we have evolved from pushing pigments around on flat services just as we evolved from runners and thowers into trigger pullers, snare builders, and poison brewers. As the ape swings from tree to tree picking the ripest fruit, we have created new species just to have better fruit.

Mechanical skill is, in fact, the refuge of those who lack mental skill. Not the other way around.
>WELL AT LEAST I FUCKING PAINTED IT, UNLIKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHER HACKS! - adolf hitler, upon being rejected from art school
>>
>>4376398
>he thinks photography isn't mechanical skill
lul
Where you stand and when you press the shutter is the large part of photography. Both of them requires the movement of limbs. Photography is a walker's medium so photography is maybe the most mechanical artform.

The colors are original. They were taken by combining individual exposures with different color filters in front of the lens. That means all of these people had to remain very still for three exposures for the illusion to work, but anything moving such as water reveals the technique used.
