Btw why I cant take good photos from birds?
I've bought an R8 with the 800mm f11 lens and my photos never comes out sharp. Tried higher iso with lower shutter speeds and higher ISO with higher shutter speeds and always comes out like crap. Is it focusing, the settings, the post? Or everything?

Interesting lens, just keep trying different stuff, some day you'll find a setup that clicks.
Try a high ISO and overexposing the raw by 1/3 to 2/3 EV then bring it back down in post. It helps hide a little bit of the noise.

Big ooof. Those consoomer super telescopes are a bit of a trap. You're doomed to raise ISO to get light and you're too far away to use a speedlite. Granted that lens cost you $1000 and not $20,000 which is what being able to get f/5.6 will cost you. Two whole stops of light is an extra $19,000, and raising your ISO two stops costs nothing but some noise you can manage in ways.

That's a pretty excellent deal all things considered. Those 600mm and 800mm f/11s are neat in their own way so long as you know it'll be damn near impossible to get Nat Geo quality bird pics. f/11 is a slight blessing in that it's harder to fuck up focusing as well.

And it looks decent. ISO 3200 and it doesn't look like garbage, whereas if you tried to NR it too far it would likely lose a lot of detail in the feathers.

Have you fine tuned focus?
Not sure about that camera but my Nikon has auto focus fine tune, zooms can be off at one end so a little hard to fine tune.

Basically focus on 15cm line on a ruler a few meters away, see if the centre of focus is exactly at 15cm or if 14 or 16 is more in focus etc.
if it’s off you can add + or - fine tune until it’s bang on.

I've been meaning to take a photo of this white one with black spots (kinda like picrel; couldn't find a pigeon with this pattern on the internet) living near where I live. It used to hang out on the ground along with other pigeons when it was warmer, but now it's on a ledge on side of a building most of the time. Always the same spot too. It's low enough, but it would make for shitty background.
There were occasionally few different spotted brown ones of varying shades at the usual hangout spot, but I have no idea where they live.

Unironic skill issue, because the Z8 has normal full frame DR at high ISOs and you would have had more detail if you accepted the slight noise bump and raised your shutter speed instead of being a retard. There are no highlights to protect here, but still underexposing with a faster shutter would have had the same result as raising the ISO (maybe nikon is retarded and the autofocus takes a dump with dark frames)

Now you have a breathtaking photo of a plastic bird because you bought high ISO performance: the sensor size and avoided the high ISOs

full frame isn't magic, the noise performance on the Z8 is barely better than the X-T5 due to the penalty of the stacked sensor, and that's on top of both already paying the penalty of high MP

1/2500 would mean double the noise, therefore more denoising, so it's a faustian bargain

the real solution would be to use a prime, but those are fucking heavy, less versatile, and harder to acquire a fast moving subject. So sure, skill issue, but the reality is I would have missed this shot with my X-T5 and 300mm f/2.8, simple as that

Yeah so, don't use in body crop modes, ever, unless you are legitimately out of reach because you could only afford a 70-300, and you won't have to shoot birds at 1/60 because the ISO is too high. Just stick ISO on auto and enable back thumbwheel exposure compensation+histogram. Next time you will get it.

Ugh, I have so much to say but don't feel like it so this will be a lazy attempt. I'd also be repeating myself for the hundredth time by now I'm sure.

The anons kvetching make some valid points but it's hard to judge their intent because there's no way of telling what their work looks like or what their experience level is. They do list some of the reasons why I don't really like shooting birds in flight though... but not the main reason: I like having control of the situation. Continuous shooting + AF isn't rewarding for me at all, I stopped years ago. I felt no sense of accomplishment at all looking to see what my shots were as if I was opening a present. I much prefer getting as close as possible and carefully composing the best shot I can get from a chosen approach angle. 99% of the time it means I get no shot but that's what makes getting one even more rewarding.

I'm an old man who is out of the loop, what does this accomplish? I recall the D7100 having a 1.3X mode but it just used the center of the sensor, there wasn't any actual reach advantage.

DSLRs have always had the same great fast and accurate autofocus in any mode and crop mode was just a frame overlay in the OVF. Why would it be any different? The focus points remain the same size. All it would do is stop genuinely incompetent wide area subject detect from locking on to clutter (and that’s what the restricted area subject detect zones on mirrorless are for - the z8 and zf even let you customize them)

You could drop your shutter speed and ISO a lot to reduce noise, if that is a concern you have. If not, embrace the noise. As for composition, I'd say you did the best job possible for this shot. There isn't much to work with.

I thought about that afterwards but decided that the noise really helps the mood of the image. I was also doing it handheld which is part of the reason, the other part was I wanted it underexposed for the sky.

I actually quite like the noise on this sensor quite a bit. I'm considering picking up a k5, just to have this sensor in a more normal form factor.
