I just ordered the Viltrox 28mm f4.5 pancake for Sony E mount. Right now, the first 50 people can get it for just $69 on indiegogo. The price later will be $99.

Sonyalpha.blog already reviewed the lens (although took the review down as it was too early to be published). Some guy on sonyalpharumors read it though, and he said the lens had excellent sharpness in the middle of the frame.

Why? Most of my pictures are taken at wide apertures anyway.

This lens unfortunately can't be stopped down to f8 or f11 though. It's a constant f4.5. But I'm sure it'll be good.

Still, it's only 60 grams. Basically a bodycap. This will make my A7C pocketable.

Would I rather have the 28mm f2.8 from Canon? You bet. But you take what you can get as a Sony shooter.

And? Its a pancake, a literal toy. It is physically impossible for it to have any decent features like REAL weather sealing, an aperture ring, an af/mf switch, and a custom button and still be a pancake. Shit, if you ask nikon it can't even have filter threads and still be a pancake.

Grabbed it, it'll be perfect for skiing. My A7C will fit in my pocket rather than having to deal with my backpack every time I want to take a pic, and at 62€, I won't care if I fuck up and crash myself in some tree. The 8 aperture blade for kino sunstars sealed the deal.

Ken rockwell is not an actual photographer but it's wrong about pancakes - granted, actual photographers only touch leica and fuji pancakes, not canonikons that have no reason to exist because the cameras are huge and ugly

>The ONLY FF brand with a real pancake (canon) has the largest bodies
>The brand with the smallest bodies only has one near-pancake (samyang af 35mm f2.8) that is the same length as nikons pancake with the hood that is unironically required
It's so sad

Why are canon, nikon and sony unable to engineer something fuji, olympus, and panasonic had no problem with - a small camera with a genuinely small lens?

Spoken like a notphotog.

Photographers aren't seen with their cameras. No one cares about them. The camera is not part of their identity. No one notices if you do your job right. You either look professional, or no one sees you at all.

And then you have posers, who are not photographers and are mostly just obsessed with looking like a retro chic magazine cover thot with a faux-retro camera. For those people, I recommend olympus. Swiftie tested, swiftie approved.

This is strangely true. Ive assisted for about a half a dozen photographers and at some point I’ve asked them what model of camera do you shoot with? The response every time is an “umm i’d have to look, it’s some kind of Canon/Nikon…something.” They know every damn thing about their lenses intimately and exactly how they’re going to use them, but they don’t give a fuck anout the body or the brand or model or its tech specs at all. They have 1, a business to run, & 2 a shot book to get through before they lose the location, and 3, about half the time they need to get it all done, then on to editing & doing it all over again the next day.

The reality is that you cannot see a difference between a sharp and a soft lens, unless you zoom in past 100%.

>>

The most basic psychoanalysis of this frantic spamming troll we picked up and his 90001 snoy hate posts is:

Clive absolutely fucking hates every camera body that is not the a7cii or a7cr. Clive is horribly disappointed with the state of FF mirrorless. He hates every FF nikon, canon, and panasonic body available for a multitude of reasons that actually sound pretty reasonable because mirrorless is plagued with excessive size, autofocus tech regressions, and really bad battery life... except for SNOY!

Therefore, our local snoy hater feels he has no choice but to buy a snoy. But snoy has no pancakes so the cameras are hard on his tiny hapa hands and dont fit in the baggy hoodie his boyfriend bought for him. So he is so, so, very mad at snoy.

We're not so much defending the company as we're just wondering why you want to shit up /p/ non stop over this one company when all of the other companies are equally shitty in their own special ways.

The shittiness you hyper-focus on isn't even very relevant. I could give you 10 ACTUAL problems with sony off the top of my head, ones that actually affect photography, that sony has refused to fix for years despite industry professionals writing letters, and I'm not even particularly biased against sony. All of them are more important than sony not releasing a garbage lens that makes every design compromise possible to hit a marketing department mandated millimeter figure.

How about 3?
