After some testing, I have gotten to the bottom of the "olympus has real 5 stop ibis, snoy/canon/nikon only has 2 stop!" despite CIPA rating everything on the same objective mechanical shake device.

And by testing I mean I did a 1/2s shot with my olympus and then did it again with my friends sony and didn't notice any difference.

Oh damn, looks like the downsampling factor allows you to gain a full stop of noise perf regardless of equivalence while being essentially immune to aliasing with real world subjects.

A gfx100s is $2500 off ebay, a mid tier canikony FF is $2500 new, if you want the highest quality images which will you pick?

Obviously a gfx, and then get an mft for birdsnaps.
>>
>>4369126
>A full stop
The GFX is more than a full stop cleaner in the studio test scene. Looks more like 2 stops cleaner. Also the exif says the canon was shot at f5.6 1/1250 and the gfx was shot at f5.6 1/2500, so it actually received less light.

So full frame is pointless too? Or does it could be better end when sensors bigger than yours begin?

If a gfx is more than a stop cleaner than a 45mp fool frame at the same size, then at 25 or 20mp it would be basically noiseless. Full frame might as well be micro four thirds, so you might as well call it pixel peeping is le bad and buy an om-5.

Well, if you need fuck off big prints that's a whole different ball game than a 2% difference in year to year models or these manufactured pro-sumer console wars that the mft cult members fall for hook line and sinker.
>>
>>4369243
Most pro photography isnt big prints

Its as schizo chad said, once you downscale your 100mp large format four thirds it is over a stop cleaner than full frame and has no aliasing. If you shrink an iso 6400 gfx LF shot and a iso 3200 35mm small format shot to a 3000x2400 print the gfx will have finer detail, no visible grain left after mild post, and no aliasing. It’s just a better camera than full frame. That’s why pros use them. Their shots look professional in any light, at any size, no excuses.

If better doesnt matter to you, why not shoot micro four thirds?
>>
>>4369254
That is not what I am saying at all. Also I have a phone that takes pictures that look 2% worse than mft, but is 1000x more convenient to use.
>>
>>4369238
Tbf your camera is getting pretty long in the tooth. You would really benefit from upgrading to a G9 which would really help control the noise.

That and/or fill flash would go a long ways to help control that noise.
>>
>>4369256
A standard old gfx100 also outdoes every small format camera for image quality at every iso and final image size. It just looks cleaner and more detailed than all other cameras.

If noise and stuff doesnt matter to you, a 20mp om-5 or old em1 with a pair of cheap lenses like a 25mm f1.8 and 12-60 f3.5-5.6will take noticeably nicer photos than a phone and have things like 8 stop ibis, live nd, and better autofocus and burst rates. Once you put an even longer lens on it is totally over for every phone to be released in the next 20 years.
>>
>>4369260
Okay, and 4x5 and 8x10 outdoes 100k digital camera setups.

Nothing I've seen in this thread is more than 5% better than my phone.
>>
>>4369261
4x5 is definitely not outdoing a gfx unless you drum scan or buy a gfx just to take a photo of your photo, and stick to iso 100 slide film, tech pan, and ultrafine 12 speed black and white.

Maybe 8x10 could if you could focus it before the sun goes down, but blurry bug anon cant match up to a handheld focus stack from an om1. Mft > film.

I can link you a test where an 80mp camera resolves as much detail as 4x5 portra 400 and equals even slow films because lolfilm had to stop down further and diffracted, with expensive high end scans

A gfx100 is better than most 4x5 and everything smaller including 35mm small format digital. So does it could be better end where your sensor begins, or are you going to write it off as pixel peeping and shoot micro four thirds?
>>

You’re full of shit. A phone doesn’t come close to 5% of a G9, let alone a G9II.
A typical phone sensor is about 43mm^2.
A 1” sensor is about 116mm^2.
A mft sensor is 225mm^2.
APS-C is 370mm^2.
FF is 864mm^2.

You roughly double the area going up each format, roughly increasing the performance by about 1 stop. That’s way more than a 5% difference. On a technical level, the difference between a typical phone and a mft is about that between mft and a FF. If you have negligible difference between mft and a phone, then the difference between a phone and FF might not be negligible, but probably won’t be a significant difference.
And that’s frankly just not true. FF is way, way better than phones at taking pictures at a technical level. And mft splits that difference.

Maybe you’ve got a point if you compare a modern phone camera to a pre-2010 mft camera.

And on the aesthetic degree, at 1” you start getting meaningful control of bokeh and depth of field, and mft gives you all the tricks you need except super-shallow-dof, which is stupid for most people, because pictures where the eyes are in focus but the ears are blurred looks fucking terrible and people need to stop using FF at f/1.4 to take generic portraits.

Maybe someday AI bokeh will be nice, but it still looks like shit for anything other than selfies to post on social media.
>>
>>4369269

Here you go bro, 80mp vs 4x5 velvia drum scan pixel peeped to the max, equivalent to a building sized enlargement. 100mp is doubtlessly even better, and you are definitely not drum scanning every sheet like a digital camera is producing its full resolution in a ready to use format. Most of your photos are probably lower res than mft and covered in dog hair. Just buy a g9ii and add dog hair in post lol.

These photos would be impossible on a phone from depth of field and the resultant bokeh alone. AI bokeh might help but still looks like shit. There are some other tidbits in some of these that would make them not work on phones, too (e.g. close or far focusing distances that make a phone fall back to one sensor and, for other reasons as well, lose a lot of computational oomph).
>>4369266
Even this one, phones don't do that kind of detail especially at the higher ISO. They have to do computational photography to "fill in" the detail, and create a smudgy look with fine details like the dog's hair. It can still be a pleasing snap, and I'd say the aesthetic result would be similar to this one, but on a technical level it doesn't hold up.
>>4367904
This is the only mft photo I've seen here that'd be within 5% of a phone (actually, a phone would probably do better here due to computational photography and its effects on color and dynamic range) but that's possible only because of the large depth of field and low ISO.
>>4367696
You could probably take a similar photo on a phone that is aesthetically close, but would lack the depth of the bokeh.
>>4369238
You'd probably see less noise here and potentially more detail (but also more smudge) due to the magic of computational photography, but that's because it's a photo taken on a camera more than 10 years old. A G9 would assuredly perform a lot better here and take it back above phone's capabilities. But again, a phone isn't going to get that subject separation nor depth of field effect.

I'm looking for a compact and affordable (max 1000€ including one or two lenses) mft camera.

Should I consider the Olympus Pen F?
Or maybe the GX80? Bummer though that it has no exposure compensation dial.
Or maybe the E-M5 II or the OM-D E-M10 Mark III?

I'd be thankful for any advice. I want to use it for daily photography, common snapshiting, architecture, nothing fancy really
>>
>>4369989
Lumix G100. Very compact, yet still comfy. Same sensor as the G9 so image quality is pretty great. Detractors will bitch about no IBIS but OIS is common on m43 lenses.

Most of the bad reviews are judging it as a pro vlogging camera, when it’s really meant as a casual hybrid / entry level vlogging. When you look at it as a newbs first camera or a daily carry for someone that otherwise has pro kit, it fares a lot better.
>>
>>4369992
>Detractors will bitch about no IBIS but OIS is common on m43 lenses.
Only on the Panasonic lenses, which makes sense since until somewhat recently the split was always Olympus IBIS bodies but nothing in the lenses (other than a handful of slow and very expensive pro lenses), Panasonic had IS on basically everything higher than the most basic kit lens but nothing in the body. Panny got the better deal since dual IS is more common/possible with recent bodies thanks to all the existing lenses with IS.

>>4369989
Go as new as possible, 20MP sensor if you can, 16 if you're really hurting, I have no idea what the Euro market is like. The Pen-F is basically a fashion piece and yeah it looks neat but that would blow your entire budget on the body alone, and the internals can be found much easier and cheaper in other bodies like the M5 Mark III or (mostly) M10 Mark IV. The older Olympus bodies have truckloads of customization for all your autismal settings-storage but if you're just doing daily stuff with the occasional weird scenario there's no need to go back that far and give up the newer and better sensor. Can't personally speak for the Lumix line unfortunately, having no experience with them, but the 8-whatevers- GX8, GX85, G85- all seem to get pretty good reviews. As for lenses, if you budget it right you might be able to go with a semi-new body and one standard zoom, the Olympus 12-whatever Pro and equivalent Panasonic lenses are all great and a good deal when bought used; any zoom with the Leica name attached is an overpriced gimmick.
>>
>>4369997
Pana has dual IS even in their most basic kit lens
The 12-32
>>
>>4369998
Shit, yeah, that's a good point, I forgot about that little thing and the site I'd checked for reference is outdated and doesn't have it listed; the basic Panny 14-42 kit lens has IS too, or at least the newer version of the chunky one does, the one that says HD on the side. There are too many lenses in this segment and I always forget which one is which.
>>
Still waffling between buying a Lumix 20mm and Olympus 25mm f1. 8 lens. Slow focus isn't a deal breaker and I tend to shoot my 14-42 kit lens closer to 20mm than 25mm but my camera is an Olympus body without PDAF. Is either prime better enough than the kit lens to warrant burning $200?
>>
>>4370055
I used it on gx7 (no pdaf or dfd) and that is quite slow, because it sometimes hunts through the entire focus range. IQ wise it's great and the 40mm fl is definitely a lot more versitile. You probably won't be shooting action with either, so I don't know how much that matters.
>>
>>4370055
In my experience, lumix lenses are almost always optically superior to olympus lenses especially if they're marked MIJ.

Which sucks because olympus makes the best cheap bodies (too many lumix prices are aps-c/ff tier due to video geeks and leica associations, making micro four thirds pointless), with mount flange screws that break any lumix lens sealing.

>>4369989
With that budget and no concern for wildlife videography, you should pretend micro four thirds does not exist, select an aps-c mirrorless based on your personal preferences, and if you overshoot by 1-200 simply do some extra work to raise funds.
>>
>>4369992
The only realistic markets for me are germany and austria, where the G100 is rare and goes for inbetween 400 and 600€.

>>4369997
The gx9 is also available in used and good condition. Read about the GX8***s too. They all seem decent and sell for inbetween 400 and 800€ with a lense or two.
Tending towards Lumix, but I appreciate the insight.

>>4370067
I got the 600D, but it seems as the lenses I got for it wont work with mirrorless.
Shouldnt there still be some other advantages on the m43 side compared to APS-C?
>>
>>4370100
>Shouldnt there still be some other advantages on the m43 side compared to APS-C?
You can get a tighter FOV for less money and a quarter pound less at the cost of a lot of aperture and noise, you get exactly one gimmick (IBIS) more often for less money, and sometimes videofags get to edit their low quality youtube clips slightly more aggressively
>>
>You can get an R7 for $940 in the US
lumixsisters... bye
>>
>>4370104
This has been my argument for a long time; you can get an R7 and 100-500 for far less than an OM-1 and 150-400 or 150-600. There are trade offs only in the sense that Olympus/Panasonic do sell small lenses in all the other focal lengths, whereas the R7 lacks for good wide/normal zooms and primes.

fashionable but old and overpriced: pen-f
ugly, somewhat overpriced and old: gx9

new, fair price, absurdly good feature set: om-5
old, good price, still good features: em5 mkIII

I would suggest you take a look the the OM-5 (or em5.3). the IBIS is ungodly good, it has PDAF and has quiet a nice feature set you would have to pay for with your ass virginity on full frame systems like canon

M43 's value proposition is literally everywhere you're not told to look by M43 fanboys. The e-m1 2 and 3 have great gimmick sets, the e-m5 ii and e-p5 are very cheap and fit nicely in a womans purse with a pancake

But when you insist on weather sealing your lens selection is cut down by 2/3 and gets a lot more expensive and a lot bigger.

Oh, it is base iso... wtf? A 25mm lens' optimal aperture is probably around f4-f8 so that is really the best he could have gotten in a single shot. There's even weird color artifacting in certain parts of the image. Look. The content/subject is not bad at all, but I would probably cry if I got this printed any bigger than 4x5. Landscapes need to be printed big.

based image, anon. that's what the OM5 is for: to take it with you on your adventure and document it. to hone your skills.

and later when you are a skilled landscape photographer you can come back with a medium format and take a high res/high detail image.

nowhere in that equation is fool frame to be found. it's just heavy with little improved image quality vs your OM-5.

It has nothing to do with the person using the camera, or the actual content of the photograph. :D

Maybe one day you'll find it worthwhile to lug 30lbs of large format film equipment up a mountain, but for now you are doing a fine job! Keep it up.

Micro four thirds has exactly 3 things phones do not

A hot shoe
Shutter curtains
Optical zoom

Image quality falls off fast, especially outside where you have lots of details and high DR scenes that turn into noticeable mush with a base ISO DR equal to an a7c's iso 800.

The weight/size difference isn't even that valuable if you're not using the super slow f8-12 zoom stuff (the good stuff in mft does not weather seal on olympus bodies btw, panasonic lens ass gaskets ride on olympus lens mount screw holes)

If I spent more than $500 on the entire kit i'd kill myself

M43 refers to the ratio of the sensor 4:3. You are objectively braindead.

>M43 refers to the ratio of the sensor 4:3
This is actually wrong., mft is a mount and system and the sensor is four thirds sized. You would say a phone or point in shoot might have a "four thirds sensor" but it is not micro four thirds as that's a mount standard. A "micro four thirds sensor" isn't really a thing, to be mft you have to conform to the standard. The more you know!
>>
>>4370620
Deep down inside you know its dumb and you should have got a cheaper, smaller one

You know the om-5 is a stupid camera, you should have got a lumix gm5 and put it in your pocket.
>>
>>4370623
NTA, but what fuckin standard. Oly Pana couldn't co-ordinate anything together. IS lenses only work on their own bodies. OM system is basically telling Papa Pana de casa to go fuck themselves moving forward. Even if M43 refers to the mount, the mount is indicative of the sensor size, so nobody is wrong.
>>
>>4370629
lens IS is brand specific
weather sealing is brand specific
by many user reports, sometimes optical performance and autofocus speed varies by body and lens brand
lolympus bodies using panasonic lenses sometimes having huge amounts of CA that panasonic bodies do not due to a difference in the UV filters they use on their sensors
its very fucked
>>
>>4370629

>i am frequently out in the rain so i got the smallest weather sealed oly line
Buying for WR is playing dice. Their IP rating says FRESHwater spray from xx angle with harmless ingress permitted. The IP rating itself says the weather sealing doesnt really do what you'd think ("invincible camera"), it just slows down freshwater sufficiently for your camera to work for sure for about 20-30 minutes straight as long as the water spray comes from certain angles.

No camera on earth has weather sealing as reliable as a pocket in a waterproof coat or a proper dry bag.

Olympus weather sealing magically starts failing whenever around saltwater because water does seep past the seals, especially the ones related to buttons, wheels, and zoom rings because moving objects dragging dust and their own surface past the rubber and pumping air break those seals. Then once inside the camera, the water gradually evaporates. They are not built like waterproof cameras ie: olympus tough.

Rainwater is not very conductive. You can get it on a bare circuit and be fine for a while. You can submerge gear in freshwater, turn it off, dry it out, and be fine 90% of the time. If it dries damage will most likely not even exist. Saltwater, however, immediately destroys electronics.

>Edge case
>The big selling points of a bunch of expensive lenses, like lens IS and weather resistance, do not even work on half the bodies
>if you have an olympus you're never going to get everything you could... out of what are the most well made lenses on the mount (vs china/viet oly junk)

>NOOOO INCONVENIENT TRUTH! ME NO READ!
Weather sealing doesn't mean waterproof. Water gets past the seals. It is marketed under the assumption that the rainwater you get in it won't be conductive enough to immediately kill your camera, but it's not actually doing anything hiding your camera under your coat would not.

The less conductive the fluid, and the larger the body (meaning the potential for less contact between electronics and water, and the potential for more robust sealing that takes up more room), the less the potential damage.

However, unless your camera is explicitly called waterproof and has warranty protection for water damage, some water is always going to get past it and it's a step below hiding your camera in your coat.

nah actually I was waiting for the Z6III but got really disappointed they sacrificed image quality for video faggery shit. now I have no idea what FF to get so I keep using my Z6II till it dies or something worth upgrading to comes out.

also the OM-5 is a fantastic EDC snapshoot cam so the pressure to get a working IBIS FF is minimal because the OM5 has this covered. picrelated is some low light handheld long exposures I did yesterday. as you see I take IBIS totally seriously

What are the best lenses available for the system? I know the 12-40mm from olypus is superb, but I don't have experience with anything else. What's worth getting? This guy seems to like the zuiko 25mm f/1.8.

https://andreabianco.eu/blog/2024/03/19/micro-four-thirds-and-selling-regrets/
>>
>>4372877
Best for what? There are so many lenses for the system it's hard to say. All of them are some kind of tradeoff for quality, weather proofing, sometimes AF speed, and weight. I don't own many lenses but I really like:
Oly 60mm macro, smallest weather sealed lens I have. I love how it looks even though the 120mm fov can be limiting.
Oly 40-150 f/2.8, it's big and heavy but looks great and with the 1.4 teleconverter is my go to for wildlife.
Oly 12-45, good zoom range and small.
>>
>>4372908
I mean just overrall favorites of people who post here. I've been looking into the 40-150, would be a good compliment to the regular zoom.

There's three different Olympus 40-150s- the f/2.8 that anon mentioned which is the Enormo Overdrive of the family, the f/4 which is smaller and lighter but obviously slower, and the f/4-5.6 (far right, the version 2 (R) has a different coloration but is otherwise the same iirc) is the poor man's all-plastic favorite that hits way above where you'd expect a $100 lens should other than softness at the extreme 150mm end.

the cheap plastic 40-150 is my next purchase. never did landscape with telephotos and this lens is perfect for trying out. if I like it I might get the f4 or f2.8 ... not sure which. the f4 is compact but the f2.8 can be abused as a portrait lens. and I know quiet a few horse crazy femoids who love their horse photos taken. is it possible this lens will get me laid, anons?
