Post your favourite lens and a picture you've taken with it. Keep the gearfagging to a tasteful minimum.

For me? It's the Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI. I love this lil' niggor like you wouldn't believe.

I used to have that same Nikon lens. I wish I hadn't passed it along.

Anyway, I have a Contax Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 that I've relied on many times in the past (picrel). I also like it's accompanying 50mm.

Voigt 35 f1.2 III
Relatively small, vintage charm at f1.2, that turns into modern sharp by f1.7. I like the rendering a lot. Use it a lot for portraits and lowlight shooting.

Different kind of lens than what you're posting, but probably my goto when I'm not planning to shoot anything in particular. 28-70 3.5-4.5D. Good contrast, good size, outresolves my sensor, character of the (modest) bokeh where I see nothing to complain about, reasonable CA.

>>4369272
I keep hearing how great that lens is. I'm tempted to get it, but I already have the 180 AF-D and a 100 macro, so that would just seem like collectorfagging.

Compact midrange zooms like that are very underrated. I had a 28-80G for a while and it was fun to use

Wait to find one at a good price and you won't look back. It really is great.
I have the 180 too but its blades are oily and gives very mixed results lol. Been putting off sending it in for repair.

Don't take this as rude, but this is extremely flat and desaturated and the sky is unnaturally dark. There's plenty to look at, but the washed out feel results in my eyes darting around trying to find something comfortable to rest on. I find my eyes drawn to the specular highlights on the plastic which isn't very nice, especially since they are surrounded by muddy darkness.

Kind of looks like it was taken with a 2005 compact digital point and shoot, just higher resolution. I think you can ease up on the editing a lot and end up with a much nicer shot.

Sony has no flagship pancake lens on full frame. Only APS-C.

ONLY Canon has a flagship pancake lens. Everyone else has nada, nikon thought they could cheat by cracking a lens in half but we all know that if you cant figure out filter threads you don't get to charge twice as much as a similar, much sharper lens like canon's.
>>
>>4370065
I don't see that as an excuse, it just means the wrong settings were used.

Not ideal for this shot. The camera is making poor decisions... I think the metering mode tried too hard to balance everything. More user input was needed for this one.

I loved my Zeiss 85 millimeter f 1.4. At least up until I found a collection of gear that some lady was selling so she could buy herself a point and shoot.

It was her dad's stuff and it was a Contax 167MT, a 28 mm F 2.0, a 200 mm F 3.5 and the legendary 50th Anniversary Edition the 85 mm f 1.2. $350

I took a lot of photographs on that one, mountain biking races road races criteriums, concert photos including Pink Floyd in Vancouver in 87. I did take a couple of photographs of the AN 225 with that when it was at the Abbotsford air show, but the best one of that was with my Hasselblad and the 250 mm 5.6. That one really shows the scale of just how massive that aircraft really is. That in the wide angle shots I got from inside the cargo bay under the nose

Most of my lenses are pretty pedestrian otherwise for my Canon the one stand out though is the 200 mm f 1.8. I bought it I guess about 15 years ago now from Henry's cameras. And I think I paid too much for it $3,500 us. But I've kept it in Immaculate condition even though I've used it outside quite a bit. And I've always used a lens Koat neoprene covering for it.

Now That I'm Older that lens is actually very fatiguing to use when you're not using a monopod but you can take photographs with it that are virtually impossible otherwise.

They used to be lots of these on eBay and other sites but those are slow so much so that usually on eBay there's maybe one or two for sale now. Too many of them are just old releases from the print media organizations that still exist and have been beaten to death and barely work. While I was trolling on eBay to get a price for mine to replace it for insurance purposes I noticed somebody had a bunch of stuff for it including extra Focus Motors and front filter on this so I bought a front filter glass and two extra Focus Motors that were brand new. It turns out that Canon releases parts from their stores when they no longer do warranty service anymore.
>>
>>4371407
What's weird is this focused by wire system where there is no actual mechanical connection to the focusing mechanism or the motor only four lenses that I know I've used this. This one the early version of the 300 2.8 the early version of the 600 F4, and the penultimate lens Canon produced the 1200 mm 5.6.

I could have bought one of those if I had a down payment for a house in the early 2000s for about $30,000, and now they're worth about a quarter of a million to $300,000 us
>>
>>4371415
This is going on too far. I've got to mention that in spite of it being an amazing lens it's actually very small only about 10 in Long. But it is really heavy for its size because the inside is almost all glass and or metal. They did not put any plastic into this. The guy owned it before me was a wildlife photographer but older than me, and he bought it thinking only weighed 3.2 pounds not kilograms he ended up not using it very much. The only other problem that it has is the ridiculously tiny tripod foot that the lens has so I replaced it with a Really Right Stuff.

Beyond just being a better base to mount tripod to, you can also use it as a palm rest for this heavy piece of optical equipment. You can easily get much better photographs resting it on that
>>

The Canon 24-105 F4L
It was good on my 40D
I wish Nikon made something similar at a pro level. Their 24-120 is not very good.
>>
>>4371430
I wish I could see myself getting a modern Olympus camera that's digital but I can't. I've invested too much in my Canon and my size stuff. The only Olympus lens I have left is my 350 2.8 and I don't think you can use that on that one.

I did think about that other super Canon camera. That Canon 5Ds or whatever they called it. Except it just didn't have enough going for it to make me want to dump my 6DII

And that's it proved I was right because it's a dead end ecosystem. I don't even think Canon's going to service it next year.

When I looked at that when I was the first time with my 70, and the results I figured for a full frame camera you would need at least 50 megapixels to get full resolution of what the lens is capable of.

The 5Ds is just not worth it.
>>
>>4371443
When I got my Canon 40D that was the lens I got for it. And on that camera it was okay but it doesn't perform that much better than a lot of point and shoots. The amount of distortion is noticeable even on a small computer screen, and it does have color fringing pretty bad at the wide angle settings. Canon really needed the correction for that in the camera before they released that lens.

If you're going do you have professional looking stuff, you need the 24 to 70 F 2.8 Mark II, and a 70 to 200 F 2.8 Mark 2 or Mark 3 before most of your needs are covered. And one Prime telephoto like my 201.8, and then a wider angle like my 21 mm F 2.8 zeiss. That last one is a manual focus so it's kind of slow to use and lenses surprisingly heavy for its small size that means there's metal and glass inside very little plastic. I'm really happy with that lens except for the really large annoying filter size
>>
>>4371478
Thank you for your input. When I had it I realized that the 24-105 was not entirely optically perfect, and that was one of the reasons it was one of the cheapest L lenses. But I did enjoy the ergonomics, useful zoom range, and effective IS immensely.
>>
>>4371479
I honestly don't think it was worthy of being an L lens. They should have reserved that designation for lenses deserving of it.

I'm not one to gearfag but the 105mm 2.5 AI unironically makes me happy when I shoot with it. the results that come out of it are always pleasing. definitely prefer it over the AIS version, which has straight aperture blades instead. if it's any testament to its durability, I dropped the sucker on a sandy beach and it still works like a champ.

I don't like this image at all.
Did you shoot it 10 stops under to fail to retain detail in the shirts?
Do you like the lense for any reason other than it being the first light sharp prime you've used? Doesn't it rely on a fuckton of digital stretching, CA and vignette correction to function?

canon EF 40/2,8 pancake
it's not perfect but it does what it is supposed to do perfectly
sharp wide open in the center, 2,8 is fast enough for steeet/docu shots and with how tiny optics are it's impressive. the vignette is significant but very soft and pleasant to the point that I don't auto correct for it. most important of all, barely bigger than a body cap, with 6d it's a pocket setup (if your coat has non-euclidian pockets)

also it baffles me how every braindead starter guide recommends 50/1,8 for starter prime, while this pancake is like 30% more expensive
>but muh bokeh

I think it's a wonderfully composed image that has a lot going for it. I invite you as is board tradition to post your own photography if you're going to provide meaningful critique. But thank you for your astute observation that specular highlights lack detail.

I like it because I don't need to correct it in any dimension. I don't know where you get the impression that it's unusable without a bunch of processing. That hasn't been true in my experience. Maybe that's the difference here: your opinion is formed from reading and mine is from daily use.

>specular highlights lack detail
You should google what a "specular" highlight is before you try using such a big word again.
What's lost in your image are the *actual* highlights on the main portion of the main subjects.
My snark was mainly directed at the fact that the whole image is covered in shitty grain and colour noise, which would imply that you massively underexposed and then pumped the shit out of it in lightroom, but still didn't start with a low enough exposure to retain that lost detail.
>ie the lighting was totally terrible and even using a maxxed out digislug coping strat you still ended up with this busted looking shit
It's funny that the second photo you posted is exposed the same way, but you just didn't get to the shadow slider yet on that one.
But to get back to the actual lens, ie the point of the thread; what do you like about it besides the handling?
I just looked it up and I was right, it's just another sharp in the middle, digital corrections for everything else modern mirrorless design, with an aperture and focal length that don't give you much scope to creatively control the look.
>just use your phone m8
There's no such board tradition btw, that's a new habit of the screeching idiots that live to derail every thread. My photos have absolutely nothing to do with what I'm saying about yours; you'd just prefer to pivot to shitting on me than have to back yourself up.

Trips confirm you speak the truth. I'm still surprised by its sharpness from time to time. It sure feels well built but I hope I never end up putting that to the test
