Hey /p/ros.

Is 5D Mark III with ML worth getting in 2024? Purely for photography?

I had a 1200d and was fooled into upgrading to an M50, both have a shit-tier quality in low-light settings.

I am thinking of getting 5d III, or would you recommend me getting the EOS M instead?

I can't find any recommendation against one or another.

Do you want a DSLR and can get it for a good price? I'd look into the 6D as well if I were you. Both are great DSLR's.

I actually got a 5D Mk3 a few weeks ago and have been loving it. Id say the 5D Mk2 has slightly better colors sooc but the improvements with the ISO and autofocus makes up for it.

The 5D iii was the best DSLR ever made when it debuted. Loved mine before I downgraded to a 6D as I needed the EG-S focusing screen, just get it and don't look back.

I know >color science is a controversial topic but there's something about the Mark II and III files that makes it really easy to work with the colors.
>>
I've been using the 5D MK2 color profile on my Z50's shots and they're very pleasant, true to life, and neutral. Why aren't the Canon 5Ds as popular as the Nikon D800s or Sony A7s?
>>
>>4374040
It's not worth it, and ML barely adds anything useful to the 5d3.
The only reason why you might buy one is that you're very short on money, already have EF lenses, and need great AF.
If you're not short on money buy a 5d4, if you don't already have EF lenses buy an R6 or whatever modern enough Sony or Nikon body, and if you don't need great AF buy a 6d.

May have cropped this one. Idk

Here is chicken for you. I think it's adequate, and you can definitely make nice big prints with it. The L lenses are pretty sweet and af is really good.

When people talk about "good" AF in 2024 what do they mean? I thought 2010s DSLRs were fast and accurate. Is there something else which makes these next gen mirrorless better?

In 2024 it means reliable subject detect with pdaf/cdaf hyrbid tech, because a lot mirrorless cameras basically rely on it (using it DSLR style with a single focus point in AF-C results in losing focus and hunting with most cameras)

DSLRs did not have decent shit-detect period until canon released the DPAF system, but they did have very fast AF in the OVF that was reasonably accurate within the limits of lens focus shift and calibration errors.

Correct, I edit my photos to try and convey a certain sense of mood or feeling. I could care less about sharpness personally. I understand though that those photos probably werent good examples for OP of what the camera can do with minimal editing, my bad. Heres an example with much less editing.
>>
>>4374315
Well, have fun with that. These are basically the only pics I've ever posted from my dslr. Maybe less than 10 others.

Also no one really cares about sharpness. Tonality, contrast, content are all way more important to the non-chart obsessed, especially when I'm scanning film or taking pictures of my prints. My contact prints look better than any image I've ever seen on a screen. :)

>>4374326
Yeah, they look pretty cool imo, but not really representative of quality of the camera.

having this exact dilemma right now after seeing the prices for these things and the older L lenses. I lusted after the mkiii about a decade ago. what exactly is an a7 whatever going to offer me over this?
>>
>>4374386
Yis this is Snoy specific and I was purely poking fun. Didn't look liek Canon filename so I just went with it anyway
>>
>>4374305
Great AF always means fast and reliable, but some things are taken for granted in 2024, such as the ability to recognize faces and follow the focus object while it's moving around the frame.
In 2013 reflex cameras with accurate AF existed, but only a handful had the ability to switch between different AF points after the first selection, maybe even with obstacles hiding the subject for a moment, and a reliable system to focus on the actual subject rather than the tree to its left or the audience behind it.
That's the biggest and most significant advantage the 5d3 has over the 6d, so unless you need to shoot fast and erratically moving things the 5d3 is a waste of money imo.
What >>4374309 got wrong is that DSLRs exist with much more powerful AF systems than single point AF.

Works as well as it ever did. For the right price it’s still a great camera. Beware it does have poor DR by today’s standards.

If you want God tier low light performance, R6.
