pic related, these howler monkeys were at least 30m off the ground if not more. This is a cropped version of the original as it was really hard to fill the frame, even with a 400mm on an APS-C. It's frustrating how unsharp this is, and I don't know if the weak point is with me or with my equipment.

Mostly you for trying to force photos from a bad situation and selecting bad camera settings. Also letting the camera forcus for you isn't the best idea if you're already having trouble with everything else. I think one of the most telling things is this:

You could have done with a higher iso and a faster shutter speed at 400mm. I don't know if you're new or whatever but don't fall for the only ever shooting at base iso meme. A bit of noise looks better than everything being blurry.
