1. Macro is based
2. Anything lower than f/16 is useless, anything over f/8 causes diffraction (we don't care)
3. Get a flash of some kind if you're doing handheld macro, get a softbox if your lighting is too harsh (it is)
4. 1x magnification can be overkill. Nobody cares if you hit 1x or greater, if it's framed like shit
5. 200mm for bugs, 100mm for all-purpose, lower focal lengths are memes
6. Extension tubes are cheap enough to dabble. Stick them on something between 50-200mm and go to town
7. Gear posts are allowed but keep it on topic
8. Any macro is encouraged. Bugs, plants, textures, minis etc. all welcome

Macro is about the size of the object you're photographing and not the level of magnification you're using, right?
>>
>>4376735
Technically speaking it is about magnification, but practically speaking you are correct. Small things that generally need specific equipment to photograph properly. I mean, you can shoot at 1x mag with a person as your subject but all you're going to get is nose hair, so that's not really "macro" as we know it.
>>
>>4376746
Depending on sensor/film size. I suppose using large format film for macro is a bit of an extreme edge case these days. A headshot in 8x10, or a whole ass cat if you shot 20x24 could be at 1x magnification, but it's not in the spirit of macro.

No, you did, they're probably diffracted to shit tho
>>
>>4378899
I'll tell you a little secret to get your macro shots more consistently in focus.
Figure out a way to use clear glass and a high power loupe to focus. Relying on ground glass or split prism is not precise enough.

Or just use a camera with excellent AF lol.
>>
>>4378899
Don't listen to the other retard, he has no clue
Use manual focus with peaking on

Oh, you're shooting digital. Ignore my advice. It only works for film. Just be gay and focus stack 99 images if you're doing digital macro.

Yeah basically, but that's gonna be next to impossible with a flash and a moving subject.
I thought Canon's diffraction correction was mint but I can see it fails to improve on certain things.
>>4378991
See I would normally go with MF, but this guy took me by surprise and I wanted to get the shot off quickly; he did indeed fly off about 1.5 seconds later, so fucking around with MF may have missed me the shot.

I think you can get a power pack for certain flashes that up the burst rate significantly. Probably not worth the expense unless you're really into being gay.

>>

Tripod and/or powerful flash.
Phone macro is difficult because even with dedicated macro gear it is not simple to get good results with.
This is a decent photo especially considering the tools available to you. At macro distances you'll struggle to get much in focus.

>>
>>4383906

On the contrary, snapshitters killed /p/. It used to be a photography board with quality work from people who made photo dumps in their own threads. Now it's just another imageboard no different than the rest. It's why all the good people stop posting here, it's embarrassing. Your snapshits may prevent you from being a nophoto but more importantly, it bolsters your position as a notphotog.
>>
>>4383910
>oh no, people might take photos because it's fun, that's not allowed. you have to be a pro or aspire to be a pro, and the only way to enjoy photography is to impress a faggot like me on a macedonian ship building forum.
Yeah cool man, let us know when you start one of those threads with good photos you speak of.

Nobody gives a fuck about generals except the people who post in them. Separate photo threads actually "save" the board and also get more attention. Here there is endless barrage of snapshit without any thought, it's chaotic fuck up same as instagram's explore tab.

If you want to boast about le saving the board then at least make a separate thread of your photos with a coherent theme.
>>
>>4383916
If you think anyone here posts because of some approval from niggers like you or I, you're both a nigger and a dumb faggot.

Generals exist to correlate themes where contributors don't have enough for their own thread. if you want curated portfolios, fuck off to insta.

Generals create lazy pieces of shit. Who just keep dumping their shit like they're on insta without thinking about wider and complex themes which sometimes take years to build. Create your own thread is by far the best thing for beginners.

You're just coping. Everyone who show their work wants attention. I don't know what is so "shameful" to accept this.
>>
The lil shit ITT is clearly lashing out because he’s hurt. You can spot that injured animal behavior anywhere. The hysteria. The faux-aloof posts masking his actual anxious-depressive state. He’s trying to offload his misery like an injured housecat attacking anyone who’s unlucky enough to be close by.

Seems like she has been looking for attention in a few different threads. Pretty sad behavior.

I did some stuff recently on my cameras, kinda trying to look at how theyve worn, or the parts never being as smooth or perfect as you think
Pentax K3III, with a 100mm f2.8, on a 15cm bellows extension. Something like f3, I blu-tacked the aperture lever open, and 1/125s

Bugs and small subjects taking up at least 1/3 the frame are loosely considered macro. Would rather see a photo than not because someone was scared their contribution doesn't meet some autistic benchmark.
>camera doesnt want to focus
I encourage people to manually focus for macro since it's kind of always a cunt

Overall decent macro snapshit. Head isn't in focus but if you keep doing this kind of shit you'll understand why f/4 isn't nowhere near enough

Everything is in focus, but soft from diffraction. We cannot get around this aside from spending big bucks on modern LF lenses. If your bellows allow try to fill the frame like my example pic. Personally I prefer abstract texture over close-up of thing.

>>4394636
You did not use enough camera movements to get the focal plane in line with your subject. Try imagining a flat plan that covers as much of the important stuff as possible and then use the schiempflug principle to get a rough estimate of where your front and rear standards need to be. I took very similar macro shots when I first started dabbling in LF macro. Keep at it and you'll continue to understand what works well to photograph and what you like in macro LF.

this grey/black ?noise? is terrible
im assuming your using a shitty monitor or something because it immediately stands out
>>
>>4394696
It's hardly noticeable even with the crop unless you zoom in further, and is probably a result of the jpeg conversion if reckon. The actual subject is fine, no need to be so harsh on something that is only noticeable to pixel peepers
>>
>>4394725
I bring a 10x loupe whenever I go to gallery showings. This would stand out immediately to the more concerned photography appreciators amongst us, thank you very much, sir.
>>
>>4394725
>hardly noticeable even with the crop unless you zoom in further
what monitor panel are you using?

it is extremely noticeable on my IPS display but nowhere near as bad on my TN panel
like i do not have to crop in or zoom in at all to see this, it is visible immediately and extremely distracting
>>
>>4394696
Barely noticeable on an ips w/ 100% srgb. Same on iPhone/Macbook/Ipad (just being thorough).
Some people truly are full of shit. You have to max brightness to see it. I see why people hate pixel peepers.
>>
>>4394696
I kinda see it on a different monitor now. There is a black blob top right next to the back-swimmer >>4394585 which is irritating me now too. I just used Darktable and added a few f-stops worth of brightness. How else would you go about editing something like this? Just to get more color out of the subject I mean. Maybe just shoot raw in low light too begin with?

Yes obviously. Increasing exposure on a jpeg will always do this because jpegs are 8-bit and not meant for editing.

What do you think of this IQ? Using a 40MP MF digital back from the like 2006. Just got a 120mm macro planar and 90mm super symmar macro for my new camera.

I think it does multishot/pixel shift, but only when it's tethered.

First is planar this is the symmar. I didn't have a cable release, but I did use mirror lock. Think it could be a touch sharper.
