1. Macro is based
2. Anything lower than f/16 is useless, anything over f/8 causes diffraction (we don't care)
3. Get a flash of some kind if you're doing handheld macro, get a softbox if your lighting is too harsh (it is)
4. 1x magnification can be overkill. Nobody cares if you hit 1x or greater, if it's framed like shit
5. 200mm for bugs, 100mm for all-purpose, lower focal lengths are memes
6. Extension tubes are cheap enough to dabble. Stick them on something between 50-200mm and go to town
7. Gear posts are allowed but keep it on topic
8. Any macro is encouraged. Bugs, plants, textures, minis etc. all welcome

Macro is about the size of the object you're photographing and not the level of magnification you're using, right?
>>
>>4376735
Technically speaking it is about magnification, but practically speaking you are correct. Small things that generally need specific equipment to photograph properly. I mean, you can shoot at 1x mag with a person as your subject but all you're going to get is nose hair, so that's not really "macro" as we know it.
>>
>>4376746
Depending on sensor/film size. I suppose using large format film for macro is a bit of an extreme edge case these days. A headshot in 8x10, or a whole ass cat if you shot 20x24 could be at 1x magnification, but it's not in the spirit of macro.

f/22 and I still didnt get the eye in focus, fuck my life.
>>
>>4378899
No, you did, they're probably diffracted to shit tho
>>
>>4378899
I'll tell you a little secret to get your macro shots more consistently in focus.
Figure out a way to use clear glass and a high power loupe to focus. Relying on ground glass or split prism is not precise enough.

Or just use a camera with excellent AF lol.
>>
>>4378899
Don't listen to the other retard, he has no clue
Use manual focus with peaking on
>>
>>4378898
Oh, you're shooting digital. Ignore my advice. It only works for film. Just be gay and focus stack 99 images if you're doing digital macro.

Yeah basically, but that's gonna be next to impossible with a flash and a moving subject.
I thought Canon's diffraction correction was mint but I can see it fails to improve on certain things.
>>4378991
See I would normally go with MF, but this guy took me by surprise and I wanted to get the shot off quickly; he did indeed fly off about 1.5 seconds later, so fucking around with MF may have missed me the shot.

I think you can get a power pack for certain flashes that up the burst rate significantly. Probably not worth the expense unless you're really into being gay.
>>
>>4379038
well software trickery has it's limits, the eyes have very small details, smaller than the scales in the wing, beyond a point they all meld together and you get the resullt you see
>>
>>4379052
Interesting. Currently rocking a TT350 Godox mini because of the muh grams/space savings, but I think I might just go full HAM on a normal sized speedlite and look into these power packs you speak of.

You know what you must do.

Sell your body to afford all the camera gear.

My first ever macro. Shot on an galaxy a55. How do I get this macro shooting to be more stable?
>>
>>4379112
Tripod and/or powerful flash.
Phone macro is difficult because even with dedicated macro gear it is not simple to get good results with.
This is a decent photo especially considering the tools available to you. At macro distances you'll struggle to get much in focus.
