Hi /p/. Ubran birder here. Recently went to Bangkok/Tokyo and took some bird/landscape photos. Fedex lost my wide angle lens so I had to do it all from a 100-400mm on my R10. These are mainly sooc jpegs with the Fine picture style and +1 saturation. Sometimes edited to taste with exposure/haze. Hopefully some of these are good. I'm just a hobbyist trying to keep the existential dread at bay.

The main motivation for my trip. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Love these little guys. We have the english sparrow in the states but not these.

There's a single colony of genetically seperate tree sparrows in the US I would like to document some day.

I'm happy you're enjoying what you're doing and this thread is better than most on this shit hole of a board. That said, there's nothing here that I'd be happy with. I take issue with everything from the environment and technical IQ to composition and shooting angles. It all just feels very touristy-snapshotty and I know a lot of that is from being stuck to paths or bridges in a city. Also a lot of these are at 400mm (600mm equiv on your body) and it feels that way. It looks like a struggle optically. Focal length should't be apparent in a photo, it should leave you guessing whether it's a long lens from far away or shorter one from up close. These just scream "superzoom" in low light especially >>4378869

You used the word "birder" which sits right with me because it's more about the bird than the photography with birders. Which is why I don't like 99% of the bird photos on /p/ as photography. I'm glad you got to see the bird you wanted but think not having your wide lens was a huge loss because the environment itself is a better subject here. Particularly the mix of nature and urban scenery and a solid, intact culture. The only photos I cared to look at were >>4378863 >>4378873 >>4378879

Really mediocre but its funny watching you mog the pissy z8 fag with a canon r100

Darktable is really holding your color edits back and it might be better to shoot jpeg and pay more attention to your white balance setting if you can't afford a program with professionally made color profiles to start from. Digital camera color is more complex and you will never get it right with free software and consumer grade cheap calibration gear. Professional profiles are made on targets with lots more swatches and gradients, under lots more very consistent light sources, with lots of manual tweaking of hue twists and shit. You can't even come close with volunteer work and free software. A significant amount of work goes into adobe camera matching and c1 prostandard profiles.

I genuinely think you'd have some better shots if that wide lens didnt go missing. Not to say some of these aren't nice, but I think some anons looked over your OP where you only had your telephoto.

Colours look a bit dull but that can always be fixed with some learned editing and/or OOC adjustments. Might also just be that what you're shooting in frame tends to blend together as nothing really "stands out".
This >>4378876 is quite decent as the yellow/orange leaves of the background break up the monotone feel to things. The only things I would change about this photo would come down to how wide you can set your aperture to throw the background out futher, and maybe a square crop instead. Both personal preferences.

On that note, I am considering buying the RF 100-400 but also want to save up for an R6; one will happen before the other, but your results are decent enough with the R10.

The 100-400 really punches above it's weight imo. It's fairly light and packs well. Price is reasonable for what it is.

With that said and at the risk at being a gear fag, the cannon RF system feels like it's missing something to me. I've considered the responses in this thread some more. Maybe it's time I slow the fuck down and leave behind my snapshitting ways.
