Did a 4-day trip to Iceland last week, took some pictures I'm quite proud of. This is a thread of some of my favorites. Shooting with a full spectrum-converted A7 III. Some of these shots were taken with an IR filter, will try to specify with each pic.Used a 720nm (& ND) filter for this picture of Hallgrimskirkja.[EXIF data available. Great pics! Which lens is that? The tamron 28-75? If so, which version and would it work for 860nm?
>>4381067It was! This one is the Di III RXD.I imagine it'd work ok for 850nm IR as well, though the lens does have hot spots in the center of the frame that need correcting at narrower apertures. Thankfully it's not TOO bad with the shots I've taken with it.
>>4381070Thanks! Gonna also look into the tamron 28-200 iii, apparently no hotspots either
>>4381072Nice! Yeah based on what I'm seeing the 28-200 performs very well for IR.
>>4380998>selling printsLooks like it isn't too much effort to set up an Etsy shop and use a printing service with Etsy integration. Ideally once someone orders a print it sends the order to the printer, they fulfill it from there and you get your cut. Beware shitty print on demand companies like Printful/Printify however. You can always use a service like Mpix but you'd have to put in the orders manually. Finerworks has Etsy integration and seems to be a quality company from what I've read but there are others as well.
>>4380964I will never understand IR. For me it's in the same category as selective colour photos of a red car on a b&w background. Is it considered acceptable because it was once a film medium?
>>4381370what makes you put it in the same category? one requires a considerable lack of taste and photoshopping, one literally reflects a reality we cant naturally see with our human eyes.
>>4381371HDR reflects reality, does that make it look good too?
>>4381371nta, but it definitely feels like a novel gimmick. I have seen some very beautiful shots with it, but I feel like it doesn't really add much beyond "gee those colors are odd", I've never seen it used in an artistically meaningful way. I think the problem is either>the entire shot is carried by the novelty of the colorand the shot is bad without the gimmickOr, as is the case with these photos>the shot is very niceand the color swap doesn't really add anything to it, it would have looked beautiful in normal color
>>4381372if you have a screen that supports hdr, or if its well done, of course. the fact that hdr mostly looks like shit is a different problem>>4381373yeah, I think the shots op posted are mostly good on their own, and the colors give them an extra bit of oomph
>>4381375>and the colors give them an extra bit of oomphI think the only ones that are meaningfully better are the ones he posted with Christian imagery. The inhuman color of IR causes some interesting reflection for me on the nature of those symbols.

>>4381773I'm not convinced quite frankly. You can achieve similar results with a simple change in tint when demosaicing. Using LR it takes around 10 seconds, one minute if you're masking.I would change my mind if it changed the visibility of certain details noticeably like it does for astro, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Here it's basically like applying a LUT on objects, mainly vegetals, which is mapping wavelengths to a color in the visible range. It also happens to be as arbitrary as doing it in post (by picking the filter you want). But keep going if you enjoy it, I'm just not convinced desu[EXIF data available. >>4381811Think of IR as seeing bonus light: certain objects reflect IR, others absorb it.- a leaf reflects IR, so the ir-sensitive sensor captures it as 'white' (or whatever color you feel IR should be translated to), the 'green' is overpowered by IR.- a tree limb absorbs IR, so it's 'color' is determined by visible light, there is no IR bouncing off the wood.- most man-made materials do not reflect IR, so they appear 'normal' with interesting exceptions. IR penetrates skin -- IR can photo your veins. It's gross & fascinating. IR can also see-thru certain fabrics. In short, IR is RGB+IR. RAW files have that extra data, jpgs do not. Editing RGB+IR is a creative exercise/experiment where the results are not bound by RGB rules. ymmv with various sensors, filters, apps.[EXIF data available. >>4381860Yes I do understand that as a sciencefag. But then you have to remember that this visible+IR light is mapped to visible RGB when displayed anyway. And in the shots shown in the video, I don't see any significant difference in details which can be extracted from the extra IR information, such as microstructures in the leaves or other interesting patterns in the pictures. This is why I talked about astro, for which certain objects are only visible at given wavelengths outside of the visible range. Did I miss those here?
>>4381888astro in IR is really interesting. i've had success with IR where non-IR is a polluted mess. but astro isn't high on my to-do list, so my experience is limited (as is my gear). i'm lucky if i can find north. i should really dive into stacking some long exposures in IR. pic is avg for my astro skills.... poor. >>4381860>Editing RGB+IR is a creative exercise/experiment where the results are not bound by RGB rules.I don't think I've ever seen a photo bound by RGB, it's always by the creativity of the photographer not wanting to edit any more than some light exposure and colour compensation. IR is just another set of conventions that for some reason a group of photographers find acceptable. Why don't you make fake colour IR?
>>4382011>Why don't you make fake colour IR?1. my camera is already modded at the sensor to capture IR. so IR is already blended into the RAW data. no need to fake it.2. IR enhances the R/G/B variably depending on material, lighting, distance, lens, filters & other factors. tough to fake that.3. IR spectrum is vast! 710nm to 1mm... much wider than visible. Which IR wavelength should i fake? And how does that specific wavelength behave with (see #2)? Impossible to fake it with any accuracy, really.I do avoid the meme edits of IR captures (making the sky blue is a popular one) & don't mask/layer to 'improve' only parts of the original. That feels impure, but is a valid darkroom technique, just not for me.
im tempted to convert my spare pentax k20d body, but i cant decide if i want a full spectrum + filters or just 550nm mod for red foliage pictures and ability to use all my glass with no additional filters needed
>>4382031I don't mean fake IR with RGB, I mean why don't IR photographers mess with the IR output to be even more creative? There are still rules for the IR genre so it doesn't seem any more creative to me than just arbitrarily deciding my RGB photo will have red trees and a cyan sky, which nobody does because it's not considered acceptable to modify colour that much
>>4382031 followup.examplesL: both lenses are the typical lens-black. ir sees thru that layer to the material underneath.R: new money has ir ink barcodes. old cash does not.false ir cant see/reproduce this aspect.
>>4382042>why don't IR photographers mess with the IR output to be even more creative?i do. often. developing is where the magic happens.ir benefits from creative ability or you end up with bog.standard looks. also, gear matters.
