I've been watching a bunch of videos about Schopenhauer and so I keep seeing this photo, but the more I look at it the more confused I get.

His chin and forehead are in focus, but his eyes an nose are not. Which would almost make sense with such a large format, but his eyebrows which appear to be on the same plane as his forehead are somehow not in focus either.

There is a massive falloff in detail as you get towards the bottom of the frame, his hand almost looks like it's AI generated and it doesn't look like motion blur, is it just shitty optics?

Large format fags chime in, what the actual fuck is happening in this photo?

Depth of field on an 8x10 or 11x14 camera is insanely small with a portrait lens at that distance, like under an inch. It was probably around 1sec exposure so there might be irregular bits of motion blur as well.

Nothing strikes me as odd, just an amazing portrait of one of the most "based" men to ever live, as you people would say.

dubs is right, eyes on old wet plate, salt paper, daugerrotype and so on are always blurry because those required long exposures daugerrotypes 3 - 20 minutes, other a minute or few seconds. No way not to blink or move eyeballs
