Just bought one of these and three rolls of Kodak tri-x 400 with no prior experience in photography. What am I in for?

Actual proper photography, enjoy.

Do not listen to whoever tries to comment about digital cameras, not your problem they are gullible and fell for marketing.

What you brought and are doing is photography, whatever they are rambling about is digital art.
>>
Film fact: if you dont dev and (enlarger/contact) print yourself you are not a film shooter. The moment you scan, you are a shitty digital with extra steps shooter.

Film is a hobby, not a preset. If you use it as a preset by scanning you’re wasting your time.

This man knows this fact which is why he is so scared of digital cameras that he babbles about them unprompted.

yet as he predicted here you are nophoto

>i am a faggot and i predict someone will call me gay *sucks dick*
>gets called gay
>AHA, just as predicted
Film gearfags be like^

Dont forget to use a digital camera to take a photo of your negative and jerk off to the megapixels and shaky “no AI guarantee” lol
>>
>>4383690
Demoralizing but true. Lab scans might as well be preset edits. And then you have the people who just take digital photos of film photos…

>>4383682
Time to pick up a cinestill developing kit and some basic darkroom gear
>>
>>4383693

Hardly on black and white, your film selection will have a much bigger impact.

Black and white is actually the easiest to fake.
>>

It’s… beautiful.
Photography looks so good when it’s just simplified down to old cameras and black and white film.

lol
lmao even

Wow. So based. You should mention that you can get a 35mm only darkroom set up for like 500 bucks or less if you get used equipment and a darkroom tent.

I have one of those!
The weakpoint of mine appears to be the film winding/takeup, the lever doesn't always advance the film far enough, resulting in partly overlapping frames, like the left edge of pic related.
Still a great camera.

Less, actually. Tape towels over windows or just use a closet if needed. used enlarger can be had for $50. Cinestill development kit is cheap. Paper is cheap. Etc.

Anyone who can't keep the initial investment into "really shooting film", for black and white, under $250 has a really rough craigslist/fb market photography section and lives with their mom.

Not true. If this were the case, convincing film simulations would exist, but they don't. You don't understand how illuminant spectra affects a chemical film in comparison to a digital sensor.

Good luck finding free printing paper, retard.

Hey guys, OP here,

Film came in today and I loaded the camera with it but I have no clue what to shoot. As of right now I just need to burn through a roll somewhat quickly so I can ship it off and have it developed to ensure that the camera is functioning beyond its basic mechanical faculties that I have tested. I planned on using this for a college project that's due in about a month, which is why I'm in such a rush.

Anyway, what are some good tips for a true beginner that's also a bit of a socially awkward sperg? I feel weird walking around campus and taking pictures of random bullshit even though that's what I'd like to do if nobody was around. Any advice on what to shoot for a guy like me. Also what are some good general tips for 35mm black and white photography (i.e. framing, light, whether or not I should over expose, etc.)?

Expose for the shadows
>>
>>4384190
no one will think you're weird taking pictures of things unless you start taking shots of people you don't know and they notice you doing it. expect boomers and hipsters alike to see your SLR and take it as a sign that they should approach you and discuss whatever it is about cameras they happen to know. if you're in a rush to get the roll done to test the camera I can understand that, but generally spend more time looking at the scene for what section of it you want to capture before you put the camera to face. 400 speed film is fast enough that you can shoot in a lot of lighting conditions but expect cloudy days to be low contrast, while something like an hour or two before sunset will set you up for extremely pleasing and potentially easy to calculate lighting conditions.

There are no trainer wheels or margin for error on these cameras.
You need to ensure you properly understand how to focus the camera and get the right exposure.
You also need to ensure you correctly know how to load and unload film.
The absolute first thing you should do is waste a roll loading and unloading a roll of films few times.
It will ruin the roll of film but loading the film is not idiot proof, many people will fuck it up. Have the back open, make sure the film is winding forward properly, take like 5 photos, learn how to release the film and rewind it.
Save that fucked roll as your test roll for any other camera you buy. Careful not to rewind so far it fully goes into the canister.

Then you need your 2nd roll developed asap to make sure shutter working etc and your meter was working.

Metering is complicated and you won’t get good at it for years but you should get a lot of usable photos every roll.

And always look at the photos you took and think what you could do better, it’s only 36 photos so very easy to review.

Use your phone as a spot meter, know what a stop is, know how many stops of exposure can fit on the film (technically over 14, but for normal processes use 12). Also know the exposure triangle duh. Meter every major brightness zone of every scene. pick the single exposure that places everything higher if you want less contrast and grain, the one that shifts everything further down for more contrast and grain. By working with this system consciously as a beginner, you will gain the unconscious ability to accurately guess exposure.

bring a notepad if needed. if you do it on paper you will gain or improve the ability to do it in your head.
>>
>>4384199

How are you spot metering with your phone?
I am using paid apps on my phone and even they can’t spot meter.
At best they can meter a small square and it’s pretty inaccurate vs a handheld meter too.
>>
>>4384190
>true beginner that's also a bit of a socially awkward sperg?
take photos of leaves, rocks and the corner of buildings.

All /p/ specialties. oh anime dolls if you have them also.
>>
>>4384195
Don’t do this, troll advice to burn through film pointlessly.
>>
>>4384208

Enjoy putting lots of effort into 36 photos to realise you didn’t load film properly and the roll is still at zero.
>>
>>4384221

1 sacrificial roll of film is nothing, but yes ideally use Kodak colorplus instead of trix for this
>>
>>4384221
Do zoomers really struggle doing the most basic tasks?
>>
exposure bracket some shots and note the settings so you know if whatever you're metering with and/or camera need to be compnsated
>>
>>4383690
this anon is correct
I dev my own film because I don't want some lab tech seeing my photos
then I scan the negatives because I actually don't want to be shooting film, I'm only doing it because the formats I want to shoot aren't available digitally
>>
i impulse purchased two digicams from facebook and installed chdk on them, i will go out and take pics of places where I have been before so i can look at the pics in the future and see how those have changed, i am also bidding for a superzoom from one of those japan ebay used camera sellers kek, first one didn't have IS and i bought the second one misled by dpreview where it said it had optical is but it's electronic
