I'll do you one better, here's some stuff I've done. I actually got yelled at by SCTA safety coordinators for getting so close and they almost banned me from all future events over it, anyway....

Any time I have people in my shot or groups of people I do two things, I make them the primary subject. >>4386012 R34 GT-Rs are cool but what is a lot more interesting are the people in the background. People make the best subjects, their facial expressions, how light plays on their faces, how they interact in and out of frame and what they are looking at, if I can fit it in frame.

The second thing I do is I give them something to look at, if possible. People are products of, and react to their environment. My goal at times is to capture that interaction, and in the case of my image, it's an interaction with two people amongst themselves. The man on the left is a safety coordinator who tells the racer on the right about track conditions, wind, he makes sure the racer is belted in and the car is good to go.

That's a tall order for someone at night walking the streets of Japan and I can give you the benefit of the doubt on that one. And I would have still got the shot of the R34 those are cool, but then I would have tried to capture the people interacting with it or seeing it going down the road.

This is a much better example of what I'm talking about but there's the direct back of someone's head in the shot and you chopped the bottom of the motorcycle wheel off.

The only time I ever include the back of someone's head is if it's so far out of focus it doesn't matter. The guy sitting down his eyes are closed likely because he was blinking when you took the shot.

Classic long exposure water, very nice but I would have focused more on the patterns the water makes and not the environment around it. See how mine creates an S-pattern? I know you can only do so much with a 50mm lens on these and there's usually restrictions on how close you can get, angle of approach, etc. so again I can give you a break on that.

Better interaction picture lol my bad, same principle though. Give people something to look at and capture interactions, not random people just aimlessly walking around.

One interesting thing I noticed, not everyone is on their phones like in America. It was like that in Ireland too when I was there this year, even in the airport in Iceland you had people on their phones but it wasn't like America where every single person is glued to them. I have had so many good compositions I've seen while walking and they were ruined because the primary subject was looking at their phone.

They’re boring. Humans are an art cheat because normal human brains automatically generate a predicted personality when they see a face and they can easily spiral off from there and invent meaning for something random or unrelated. If there’s no face they’re less engaged.

Autistic humans here never get this because you dont have the mirror neuron circuits wired in right, or in a functional configuration, and predictive personality generation is a weak factor in the cognitive cascades triggered by face recognition (if face recognition even runs)

You're not following the conversation. His point is that a shot is ruined if the back of a head is even remotely visible, regardless of whatever else is in the frame, including a face. Interesting that you'd go to autism but I don't think it's relevant. Besides, social cues aren't just a face thing.

I mean to be fair the 135/2 DC isn't exactly ewaste and I told myself I would either use it and if I didn't use it at Bonneville I would sell it.

That was the day the aperture in my 70-200/2.8 broke so I had to use the 135, both good lenses. I did fix the 70-200 later the next day.

That's not really what sugar said in context, but I still disagree. Even without a face shot, people can represent shapes, movement, intent, etc. Capturing emotion etc is nice if done with intent, but shooting a face for the sake of itself is, as you say, just a cheap trick.
