I will be going to Japan in October. I wanted to buy a camera that's better than my phone and mostly record stuff. But I'm not knowledgeable about cameras at all. What are some recommended cameras for beginners? I want something easy to use and easily maintainable. Something that just works and is known for being reliable.[EXIF data available. >>4398445I want something cheap for 2 week holidays, not the most professional camera for $5k
What's your price range OP?Do you want to shoot with a DSLR or modern mirrorless camera? Are you buying new or used?
>>4398453Let's say $600, I can stretch it a little bit but certainly I don't want to pay more than $1k for my first camera>DSLR or modern mirrorlessI don't knowI feel like mirrorless sounds better, but I don't know the difference in picture etc. Also mirrorless are apparently smaller so maybe that would be better.I'm okay with buying used
I found a used SONY A6300 + Sony 16-50 OSS 3.5-5.6 for 528 dollarsWould it be bad?
>>4398456With 28000 camera shutter countSorry for stupid questions, but I'm completely clueless
>>4398451That guy is retarded. If you want a great camera, buy a used D800 and and a 24-120mm f4 (or a 24-70mm).If you just want a small thing that is better than a phone, get a cheap M43 Lumix or something.
>>4398455Sounds like the Sony a6XXX series cameras would work for you. Maybe a Sony a6300 used (~$400-500) w/ either a kit lens or an inexpensive prime lens (no zooming but better image quality) like the TTArtisan AF 35mm F1.8 II ($125).I'd suggest mirrorless since in short newer technology and even with this slightly older Sony you still get very good autofocus and video. You might also consider buying another battery since mirrorless cameras do have less battery life than DSLRs.
>>4398456Kek saw this post after posting. I think that's decent enough. Kit lens isn't the greatest but honestly compared to some of the kit lenses made by Canon/Pentax in the last 20 years it's more than good enough for your purposes such that you won't feel let down.
>>4398460I'm watching a video shot with that camera on YouTube and it looks pretty good to me. I would be satisfied. But the second thing is a lens. But I think my tactic will be to just watch youtube videos shot with some cameras and lens and see which one I like
>>4398462Sounds like a solid plan to me. Nice thing about Sony's E-mount is you have plenty of options to choose from.
>>4398463Alright bro thanks for suggestions
>>4398459One last thing, why would you recommend a prime lens over a zoom lens?I feel like I would like zooming, I just watched a 101 lens video and they said that a prime lens produces generally better quality picture, but I think I really to use zoom, so I think I would rather choose that one.
>>4398468Sony G series zooms have the same quality as their primes, but this only matters at 200% zoom on a macbook
>>4398468prime lenses tend to have much better image quality than zoom lenses. They also tend to have larger apertures (let in more light) which let you capture better quality photos in low light, and allow you to blur the background (see bokeh) for subject/background separation.
>>4398468No matter what camera you get, DEFINITELY get a zoom for travels.Primes are retarded wank for studio work, and will tremendously limit your ability to compose a shot on the fly whole moving about.
>>4398475Yeah I thought so too, I wanted to shoot things like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0WEgeQ814wMaybe not exactly but I think the zoom would be amazing
>>4398478WhatYou want video? This is a /p/hotography board. That was shot on a CCD handycam. If you want basic stabilized video, you should get a DJI Pocket. It won't zoom, but you can crop a bit at 4k.
>>4398483Yeah I mostly want video I think.Photos too, but I like videoI don't want exactly the same camera as the guy has on that video, I just like the zoom effect
>>4398458>That guy is retardedThe depreciation hit on good gear is nothing compared to the cost of a Japan trip.
>>4398485I'm paying less than $5k for my entire stay, I won't spend that much for a camera.
>>4398456It's ok. I just use an A6000 with that kit lens when I travel since it's a light and small setup. Abuse the kit lens so you'll know what focal length suits you when you later.
Okay I picked the Sony A6400 as my first cameraI'm buying it without any lens, so I have to buy a lens separately. Which lens would you recommend as my only one?
>>439870124-120mm f4
>>439870116-50 pz oss35mm f1.8 oss>the big one!18-105 f4 ossDont overspend or >le invest in le system. Its just an a6400. I personally wouldnt buy all 3 of these lenses, just a prime and one of the zooms. >>4398702God no. That is a shit lens. People just crop their 24-70s its that shit.
>>4398701>Want to record holiday videos >Picks five years old entry-level crop Snoy without IBISSnoyshills score again
>>4398728He's going to use it for video, you retard. You shouldn't crop video, and lens sharpness doesn't matter much on video anyway.
>>4398443Are you going alone? Have you posten on /trv/? Id like to come
I decided on a Fuji x100 instead because my bf said it's better >>4398816If you're a big black man you can come with me and my boyfriend.
>>4398817What appeared to be an advice thread turned out to be a massive trollfest on all sides.
>>4398819Nothing wrong with buying some cheap Sony shit as a beater to get you started. Then flog it for a small loss and move onto something you enjoy more Buying crop glass is a bad choice though
Just use your phone you pleb. You’re going to get let down by any semi-pro or prosumer camera because you don’t know what you’re doing. ESPECIALLY when it comes to video. Just use your cell phone. They’re idiot proof. Save the money to spend in Japan.
>>4398828>Buying camera without stabilization and block form factor>For video>Nothing wrongLmaoLike this guy says>>4398835Just use your phone
>>4398443For video, just get a Dji Pocket. It will give you professional-looking stabilized footage (several tracking modes etc. included), and you can remote control it from your phone, make long-exposure time-lapses, stitch panoramas automatically etc., without ever needing to edit on your computer. It's pretty retard proof.
>>4398846>>4398852This is solid advice. For most plebs, upgrading to the latest soiPhone is a better video investment than any camera. Second best is a DJI pocket. An Amaran 60x and a decent mic+recorder along with a phone is a much better investment than just a camera with no accessories.
Ok I cancelled the A6400+Sigma C 18-50/2.8 DC DN purchaseI mean I want to take photographs too, not just video. But video also. And I wanted it to be good quality. So I will research further instead of making rash decisions.>>4398852Looks alright, but I want crispy image. I know I'm a retard and a pleb right now, but that's why I wanted to buy an actual camera to also get into photography >>4398816Yes I'm going alone
>>4398884There is literally nothing wrong with using an a6400 for video - professionally. If you rig it up with a gimbal, recorder, shotgun mic, ssd, and battery, it is an amazing video camera and everything will look better, smoother, and more professional than sooc gimmicks like IBIS. And everyone who ever told you it was good for video was doing just that. What you want is a high end featureset, so if you dont want to spend over a thousand you're going to have to severely compromise either video quality or photo quality. A DJI pocket combined with a nikon d750 would outperform any all in one hybrid for the same price, because the hybrid for the same price is garbage like panasonic micro four thirds.
>>4398884Btw neither the camera or lens you mentioned have stabilization so would be crappy for shooting video without a tripod/gimbal. Would be fine with one of the Sony kit lenses that have OSS.
>>4398893>>4398895Yeah using a gimble makes really stable video, but it's also quite a large setup to carrySo I'll have to consider between some options.A6400 + gimble produces the picture I want, but I'd rather have something incognito so I'll look at sport cameras too
>>4398884There's a very steep learning curve to videography. That really crisp image quality may take $5k worth of gear to get, plus the knowledge of using it.Photography is easier, but you're still going to fuck things up if you're a noob.Best to pick one thing you want to do this trip, and to do the other thing with your phone. For video, just accept that a DJI pocket will prevent beginner mistakes from ruining your footage. If you really want to get into still images, you should get the cheapest full frame you can, with a standard zoom.
>>4398884My ex got a Sony a7iv for her travels photo and video, she also got a gmaster lens but thats a plusIts an easy camera to use, has auto everything so you can take take photos nonphotographers will love without knowing anything about iso or shutterspeed
>>4398893This, but get the D800, not D750. D750 is much more expensive for no reason.
>>4398914A flip up screen adds more to your life (more compositional variety without posing like a retard or laying in dirt) than an imperceptible megapixel increase for pixel peepers pleasure. That's why. Body features value >>>>>>> megapixels value. Also there's the thing where more megapixels = worse colors at high ISOs.
I've changed my mind. I have decided that Sony is gay.
>>4398914>d800screw the blurry photos due to mirror slap 1/250 and slowerHe's not going to put in mirror lock up on a tripod for his vacation snaps. D750 flipscreen and wifi are more than enough to justify the price difference. Also d800/d810 get strong purple glow in shadows at higher isos which can be more than noticeable in photos with ADR enabled.
>>4399039What a bunch of retarded myths
>>4399037impostor
>>4399072https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d810/17also t. owned a d810Well guess your baseless comment disproves fact.
>>4398817Coincidentally Im half black
>>4399172I'm literally not seeing any difference whatsoever
>>4399187That's ok, maybe when you own one you'll understand, although it seems higher mp cameras are not for you.Notice you selected the d810 (which has improved damping) when I stated specifically the d800 1/250 and slower. It's still obviously noticeable on the d810.
>>4399187also protip: turn VR on
>>4399197>Turn VR on>On tripodGet a load of this retard
>>4399201same thing happens handheld you stupid zoomer fuck.
>>4398468I used the sony 16-50 oss and it looks like a phone quality. I used a lumix 50mm 1.8 and it made me cum. You don't need zoom, you need quality.
>>4399196>>4399187What site is that
>>4399212dpreview
>>4399203VR can make a shot more blurry on a tripod, faggot
>>4399210What if I only want to buy 1 camera body and 1 lens?I think a zoom lens would be more useful even with worse picture quality?
>>4399210Also I was talking about a Sigma C 18-50/2.8 DC DNIt has a constant f/2.8 apertureYour zoom lens has f/3.5-5.6 aperture which is much worse
>>4399218No shit Sherlock
>>4398455Sony ZV-1 should work for you. It's compact, has decent video, and takes nice photos with a pretty good lens.
>>4399968I'll settle for a6400 because ZV-1 doesn't have the view finderNow I'm considering what lens to buy and I think I'll get a 24-70 zoom lens, but I don't know what model yet
>>4398468better quality in prize range is one thing but most of the time primes are recommended to noobs because they force them to think more about composing picture rather than just zooming with no thought into it. 50mm primes are the basic cheap lenses so it might be worth buying one just to practise and grasp what you;re looking for>>4399219if you must use only one lens (which is reasonalbe assumption when travelling) zoom is better obviously. you need to decide how good quality is enough. kit lenses are dirt cheap but some of them (like canon efs 18-55 or >>4399210) are just e-waste. the better zoom the more expensive and bulky it will be
>>4400097I've watched like so many youtube videos about photography and cameras and lenses since making this thread and now all of my YouTube is photography related lmaoI can't wait to get started Anyway, I will probably buy a mid-range zoom lens at first to just figure out how some lengths feel, but then I will want to buy a good quality primesActually this 14mm looks sickhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2WNth3VaXQBut once I get the hang of it I will probably buy like a 35mm prime
>>4400098Dear god dont do 35mm my only lens is 40mm and i regret it immensely. Cope focal length. I am always cropping or stitching a panorama.
>>4400112Skill issue
