Just bought pic related (Canon 8-15mm f/4L EF Fisheye USM Lens). Should I have bought off brand instead? I have a Canon R8 and want to shoot some creative wide lens stuff.

Nah, you'll be fine. It is a good lens.

what do you mean by off brand? afaik only canon and nikon make the 8-15, and it being the onlky lens that can go from circular to covering a full frame sensor fisheye.. or did i miss some cheaper lenses that can do the same
>>

Anything off-brand is going to be manual chinkshit because Canon hasn't opened fullframe lens options up to 3rd party. EF lenses are completely acceptable and even desirable in the case of L lenses that you can now get for fuck all money.
You've got a constant aperture, weather sealed, AF, 4 stop IS ultrawide lens. Idk if any 3rd party manufacturer has ever combined those (see: current Sigma lineup never including IS.)

trips, neat!

heres another pic showcasing the focal range of the lens. great fun, in my opinion..

I've never had a shot i liked on the 8mm side of things, so i keep it from 11/12-15mm and the shots are usually a lot easier to compose, in my opinion.

Its an excellent lens. I do alot of underwater photography, and it's highly sought after especially for over/under shots.
It has it's nuances. For example the minimum focus distance can be a double edged sword. If you don't use the appropriate spacing for your porting it can focus hunt within the dome port element which can be very annoying.

The advantage is (if ported correctly) you can do underwater wide-angle macro, you can have your cake and eat it too with wildlife and landscape photography.

Read an extensive article where it got compared to the newer 10-20mm rectilinear and it seemed like the older fisheye was preferred when it came to underwater photography. The digital corrections didn't do the 3 times as expensive lens any favors.

Also to add, Tokina 10-17mm is also a very capable lense that has very good value for money Id recommend for any skill level.

It's also inexpensive to start off with when making a beginner rig. With adequate and correct lighting technique it can still punch above its weight in competitions.
I'm seeing this lens getting finalist spots and honourable mentions, even in the 2024 Ocean Photographer of the Year.
