Day 2988 to go
>>596701Good luck with your Crane army
How many to go now?
>>596759Day 4972 to go
>>596770gj anon i hope you finish :)
Day 11948 to goThe threading was trickier than expected, maybe I should have kept the cranes with the wings up
>>596879Nice
Day 24920 to goWill do one with upright wings for the next one
>>597163Very nice, keep it up, anon
>>596701I've tried to do this twice, once with 15x15cm and the other with 7x7cm, and both times I tried I got 100 cranes in and just used the paper for making modular origami
Day 34.840 to goTurns out keeping them flat is way easier>>597274Did you have any wish in mind?
>>597388ganbatte, anon
Can you still find your first one? I used to enumerate mine until mom got mad with the amount of paper spent.Anyway godspeed to you
>>597468It's probably the purple rightmost one.I think I paid $50-$60 for importing both kits for a total of 2k papers, 7.5x7.5 cm, was cheaper than buying locally. Mostly just the shipping was expensive as fuck.
...
>>596701I gave this a go once in high school. I think I gave up at around 600 or so. がんばってね
>>597876This is /po/, not /pol/>>596701How are you doing OP? You should have made a huge dent in them by now at your current pace.

>>598502Screw it, i'll join you too OP. I was able to find it cheaper on amazon. In the US is was $12.77. Race you to 1,000?

>>598585Go for it, but I doubt I'll go any faster. My estimate is that it will take me about 6 to 8 more months.>>598633To have a child.

Just bought this I'll try catch up to you lads
Day 87.640 to go.
Small progress update, 1/5 done. This was a lot harder then I initially thought. Good luck OP.
Day 150 to gothis was the hardest thing I've ever done mentally, since all I've done is work and fold cranes for two weeks. During the folding I listened to Dune and a bunch of podcasts. I can't share this with anyone IRL because they would think I'm insane because I am, good luck on your respective journeys to 1,000. I think if one of us was exceptionally neurodivergent they could get it done in 5 days, folding 200 a day for roughly 12 hours a day, not including stringing.seriously though good luck, may your wish come true
>>599812Good job anon
>>599812Those look so well made anon. You did a great job.
>>599812>they would think I'm insane because I amThey already know, I can't think of a better reason to display it. What are you going to do with them? They're cool. Some kind of lamp/chandelier would be really neat...or some kind of mobile. Personally, I'd set them on fire like a burning man kind of thing. One tall pyre.
>>599812The absolute madman
Day 135560 to goSorry about the lack of updates, had to move and that was a bit hectic
>>600920im going to give it a go as well. will grab supplies tomorrow. never give up
>>599812Good job anon.
>>596879>attack formation
>>600920This is cool.>>598585link?
>>599812>I think if one of us was exceptionally neurodivergent they could get it done in 5 days, folding 200 a day for roughly 12 hours a day, not including stringing.I did it once on a personal challenge. A thousand cranes is feasible in five days.Let's see: Can you fold 20 cranes in an hour? If you do, a ten hour binge can produce 200. By friday, you got a thousand cranes.Put a good podcast or watch videos on your portable while doing it. Be sure your elbows rest on the table: it cuts your risks of tendinitis.
How many of easy colour are in each strand of 100? Or are they strands of 200?
>>601614The packet I'm using goes 40 cranes, 20 colors per strand. So you end with 25 strands
Update without picture this time, because I have been a bit lazy.Day 206440 to go
>>602397Bro good lucky
Day 271320 to go
Wait, it's day 240, mixed my dates
Day 271280 to goSOON
Day 324160 to go.Reaching the final stretch!
>he's actually folding 1000 cranes>he's not dying of cancer due to nuclear radiationgodspeed anon, unless your wish is for "world peace," then fuck off
Just finished mine. I'm the anon from >>599754It was a lot harder than I thought, but the pay off was worth it. Best of luck op.
>>606679Congratulations anon! I hope I can finish mine as well I'm at 500 or so I think also good luck op
>>606679Nice! Congrats
>>606257you'll just have to fold your own 1000 and wish for world war to cancel things out
>>606679Why did you make a gay pride flag out of cranes?
>>606766Fags will never own the rainbow
>>606759haha this needs a bump. btw, have you ever folded a double or triple "siamese crane"? interesting twist on a classic favorite. except with the triple crane you can only fold 999 of them. world war so close yet so far...
Well, here we are lads. 999 cranes folded, only one left. And so we reach the end of the journey, and yet we are so very far, for it is not me who shall fold the last crane. I now start a 18000 km journey, I'll bring back news in about a month.
>>608368Good job. Looks beautiful.
>>608368are you the anon getting married? if so congrats.
>>606777Woah I've never heard of siamese cranes before, they look really cool
>>608368Beautiful
>>596701Got one tooFuck I didn't expect the cranes to be so tinyBtw it cost me only around 5 dollars in my country but only because I got lucky
>>608368Sweet dude, well done
OP here: UpdateWell, the last crane has been folded, and I got a good response which later turned into a lot of doubts, and overall seems like this is not going to work out, kek. Much like in the original story, the cranes are useless, but I guess that was expected. Was interesting thought, good luck everyone.
>>609747God bless you, anon. This has been a fun journey.
>>609747Stay strong OP, and kudos for your efforts!
>>609747At least you tried, anon. I hope it all gets better for you :).You have inspired me, and I've started my own with the paper I use to take notes in my university.
>>608451It's overI'd folded around 300. Then got busy with the moving, then just forgot about them for a couple of months. Yesterday I tried to find them and realized the box where I put the folded ones got lost while moving. I think I'm still going to fold the rest. It just sucks that I put so much effort into this and I can't even finish the project because I started folding by color
>>609747Sorry anon
Well, I think it's time I get around to starting mine. Paper should be here by the end of the week, and I decided to go with patterned paper instead of the usual rainbow, so we'll have to wait and see how it all looks complete. I don't have a definite "finish by" date, but I don't want to take forever. Probably not going to tell anybody else about this either, so sharing updates here is going to be the only thing I do.See you all in a few days with the first progress.
>>6159541/1000
>>61598250/1000First strand done (sorry for shitty picture), and these are already a lot bigger than I thought. Not sure exactly how I'm going to store these. I'm getting the hang of making these, and I'm happy with how the patterned papers look together
>>616020how many are you making a day? Think you can finish by the end of the year?
>>616188Hopefully by end of year, yeah. I had to take a little break, but we are back at it again. Just finished 100, and since I usually sit down and do 10 at a time, 20 if I'm in the zone, so I'm still on pace. 99 days until new years, so I still have some wiggle room. Also, I underestimated how much space these take up. I'd like to make something nicer to hang them on once I'm finished, but for now the only thing I can think of bar keeping them in a box is to hang them on my blinds. Or I go the full catharsis route and burn them all once I'm finished. Feels like it'd be kinda fitting. Honestly, I haven't decided what I want to do at the end.
>>616207200/1000The blinds that I was hanging them from were actually really weak, so I'm now awkwardly hanging the strings from a coat hanger in my closet. Not the most attractive setup, so probably no more pictures of the strands until I'm done. Gonna have to pick up the pace to finish by 2024, though. Last month has been very busy for me, so hopefully I'll be able to catch up in the upcoming weekends. Only have to do 75 a week, which should definitely still be doable.
>>616707410/1000Slowly but surely we are getting there. Still hoping to make it by the end of the year, and with a bunch of time off work coming up, I think I'll be able to get it done. Definitely getting better/faster at folding these, but stringing them up is still the worst part. I usually get almost a whole string folded before I sew them together out of laziness
500/1000I'm going to be honest, finishing this in 2023 is probably not going to happen, but that was never really a real goal for me, it was just a convenient target. They are starting to take shape though, and it's nice to know that I am over the hill so to speak. I still hate stringing them, though. Easily the worst part of the whole experience so far
I'm joining this thread. I don't exactly have a total number of how much I've done but here's my main stack where I've been dumping my cranes. I need to string them up at a later date.>>615954I became the 5th IP, anon. I hope you had a nice Christmas. It looks like we're the only 2 in this thread that need to finish. Let's finish together. >>599812>Day 15I thought this was a typo until I read the rest of your post lol
>>617867Here's the paper that I'm using.
I sometimes fold giant cranes as you can see here >>617867 and I just wanted to showcase some pictures of them. Here's a picture of what it looks like before the folding. Each paper is 6 x 6 inches and for each giant crane, I do a layout of 6 x 6 papers which ultimately makes a 3 x 3 foot square. I just tape each little piece of paper together to make these behemoths.I will not be counting these giant cranes towards the 1000 though they would certainly help boost my numbers. I hope I won't be regretting this statement.
And one day, I decided that a 6 x 6 paper-sized crane wasn't big enough so I decided to do a 10 x 10 paper-sized crane to make for a whopping 5 x 5 foot sized square.
>>617872Oops.
>>617872>>617873Oops again.
>>617874And here's what the resulting crane looks like compared to the typical crane. It was so big that it couldn't stand up on its own. I had to add cardboard inserts into the dude for it to stand up. 6 x 6 is the limit for me from now on.
Felt inspired by the dude that did the 1000 cranes in 15 days so I tried to do as much as I could in 24 hours. I ended up doing 87 cranes. Adding that with my main batch I have a grand total of 224/1000 cranes right now. If I count the giant cranes I previously have made I would have ~500 cranes.
570/1000Well, thought I'd catch up a bit with having Christmas off work. Turns out, between family and friends, I made almost none. That's life for you, I suppose.>>617867Hey, he made it!Impressive crane, anon. I always like making cranes out of random scraps stuff like wrappers and foil, but I've never messed around with making really big one. Might have to give it a shot at some point
350/1000.I bought some new paper since I would have run out if I continued using the previous 2 sets I've been using before the 1000 could be finished. Adds more variety too.>>617960>Hey, he made it!Of course, it's my pleasure to join you in this endeavor.>Impressive crane, anon.Thank you! Everything is bigger in Texas, after all. It's kind of annoying to tape all the paper together but I like the end result. I like to keep the big ones scattered throughout the house as a sort of decoration. I also sometimes give some away and the recipients seem to really like them too so it's good. And I've started to finally get back on track with watching Revue Starlight after my card-making frenzy and obligations. I just finished episode 7 - I didn't realize that Nana had it in her to become the Top Star so that threw me off. Her wish was endearing too - change can be a difficult thing and it can be easy to want to stay in the comfortable past. But if there's anything constant in life, it's change. Here's to hoping we have positive changes for our 2024!
Very nice cranes, it must take a long time
410/1000. I pretty much have a battalion of the cherry blossom cranes now. I need to find a new box to dump these guys in. And I just finished episode 8. It's nice to see more information about the enigmatic Hikari. And now there's an explanation for why she tried to prevent Karen from participating in the auditions earlier. With the whole zero-sum game behind becoming the Top Star, I wonder what's going to happen to Karen and Hikari. >>618010I'm assuming you're speaking to everyone but thank you. Each crane takes me about 5 minutes. With the goal of 1000 cranes that time adds up. The guy who did it in 15 days is amazing.
500/100. Halfway there. I posed the cranes next to Yotusbua because you did the same and because I think it's appropriate. Yotsuba is such an old manga and chapters come out at a snail's pace... much like making 1000 cranes. And I just finished episode 9. It was really nice to go back to Nana's dilemma with wanting to repeat time again and again. And it becomes more understanding now that we better know what happens in Starlight at the end. I hope this doesn't sound morbid or anything but I do hope that Karen and Hikari become separated at the end like in Starlight. But it probably won't I'm guessing. Beyond that, I especially liked Nana and Junna's conversation at the end. >>618039I am mistaken. I actually overestimated how long it takes me to do each crane. If I'm dedicated, it takes 2.5 minutes. Otherwise, it takes about 3 minutes.
600. Forgot to take a pic before I hung them up in my shitty rig in the closet, but that's where I'm it. Man, I really only folded 30 cranes in almost 2 weeks. It is what is is>>617985Glad you're enjoying the show! The series is pretty good, but I think the best parts are definitely in the movie. Hopefully you enjoy the series enough to give the movie a try as well, since it also ties up everything very well.>Here's to hoping we have positive changes for our 2024You and me both, brother>>618051>500Man, at this rate you're going to pass me soon. Do you think you'll string them up at some point? Honestly, that is the part that I struggle with the most but it does look kinda nice once you start getting the strands going.>>618010Yeah, it is definitely a time commitment. My estimate is that it'll take somewhere to the tune of 50-60 hours to finish all 1000. It depends a lot on how nice looking you want them to be. The biggest thing I've learnt from the surface level origami I've done is that it is effort in vs effort out. Folding itself is (generally) very simple, but getting as close as possible to the perfect fold takes some patience. I'm not planning on keeping the cranes once I'm finished, so I'm not focused too much on getting super crisp folds.
>>618080660/1000Approaching the final third, wack stuff. Will I speed up? Who is to say. I can say that threading the crows is still awful. If I used larger paper, I probably could have gotten away with thicker string, since the thread floats around and gets caught in the stack as I'm adding new ones. It is what it is, though, and I'll see the end of this all soon enough.
>>59670169 days to go
>>619622760/1000Still keeping at it. Slow and steady and all that. I decided that I'm going to finish them all on Tanabata which, all things considered, is pretty fitting for me. Honestly, I'll probably get to 999 some time next month so I'll just be sitting with one sheet of paper on my desk for a while. To be fair, I've had these papers sitting on my desk for a long while already, so what is another month or two?For the, probably, 2 of you in here who have completed all 1000, what did you do with them afterwards? They take up a lot more space than I expected, so I don't think I'm going to keep them with me. I plan on keeping the 1000th, but I still think I'm just going to but them all on a bonfire once I finish. Feels a lot more symbolic than just throwing them out anyways
billions must crane
>>619900870/1000Honestly, I'm feeling pretty lost with these right now. I was kinda bouncing around with what exactly my wish would be, but one of them always at the back of my mind was wishing for peace for my Mother. She had a great deal of mental and physical ailments that appeared in the past couple years and they were ones with no definite solution in sight. Signs all pointed towards things getting better recently, but she ended up taking her own life in early April. She's no longer in pain, so I had it granted in some manner, but I really didn't want it to be like this. I never even got the chance to tell her about these, since the plan was to show here once I finished all 1000. I'll still see them through, but folding these are definitely not a process that brings me joy anymore.
>>620630Sorry to hear that, been on this board for year and always did papercraft more then oragami, I dealt with a similar situation so I just ordered 1000sheets of paper and I will be joining your journey, I believe in you anon and don’t be afraid to take breaks and meditate or pray or something.
>>620630Sorry anon :/ I think it’s a moving gesture regardless. Hope things get better for you.
>>620630920/1000 It is kinda cool to see how small these stacks have become. I remember back when I could first fit the binder clips around them back when I still had 500-600 left to fold. Crazy how far we've come. I still forget to take photos of them before I string them up and hang them in the closet, but it is gonna be kinda cool seeing them all hanging for the first time together once I finish.>>620652>>620633Thanks, guys. It is definitely just a weird feeling doing them now. I think the best way to put it is while I previously had a goal for these, I feel I now have a purpose. It has been long enough that I'm over the worst of it, but doing these does help still. Origami always feels a little bit meditative, and the same pattern 1000x especially so. It is giving me a lot of time to think regardless and, even though it isn't as fun as it used to be, I do feel more determined to finish soon.>>620633I'm glad to see you joining in too! Honestly, it feels kinda weird knowing that I'm almost done, but I'm really happy to see someone going for it as well. I am very sorry that you went through something similar, since it was the progression from "Hey have you seen Mom today" to the police telling you that she was only about 100 yards away was brutal. I don't know how recent it was for you, but I truly hope you have been able/will be able to find some solace.
Holy shit this thread is so fucking cool
...500/1000I haven't made much progress due to personal circumstances. Sorry if it seemed like I dipped without finishing. I haven't been watching anime either since then so I still need to give you my thoughts on Revue Starlight. Anyways, I wanted to fold something cursed to begin this journey again. It's supposed to be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfnHUMf0jig but I messed up. I'll have to try again another time.>>618080>Do you think you'll string them up at some point?I think I'll try that but no promises. They'll definitely look better than just being dumped in a box.>>620630>>620861Sorry to hear about your situation, anon. I'll be rooting for your 1000.>>620633Sorry to hear about your issue too. Anyways, looks like there's 3 of us now. Let's all finish together.
>>620891600/1000. I tried to do as much as I could in one day to mark my return to folding and also because I'm still impressed by that one guy who finished in 15 days. Shame I fell asleep in the afternoon or I could have done more. I still remember how to fold cranes after my 4-month hiatus but my initial cranes took a bit longer than before and they're not as well-folded. I did improve on these two factors as I went on, however.
730/1000I went on another folding binge. I'm trying to wrap things up (with the possibility of stringing them up as well) before summer ends. I was chewing gum and drinking coffee to lock in. I broke my record by making 130 cranes in 24 hours. It's a shame that I fell asleep in the afternoon again or I could have done more.
>>620864Indeed
780/1000I've been away but I bring some origami paper with me wherever I go. Folding at the U.S. Embassy.
900/1000SOON
999/1000Only one more to go. I guess this is it. This is the paper that I'll be using for my last one.
1000/1000The journey is officially over. I started in May of 2023 and so much has happened in my life since. I can’t say that everything has been peachy keen, but I’ve learned so much about myself and my values during this period of folding. I’ve also had the chance to interact with so many interesting people (including you guys in this thread!). For those reasons, I’ll never forget the time I had folding these little bastards. Good luck to everyone still folding!
>>621090And here's what they look like spread out. Banana for scale. It's been fun.
>>621091I messed up. I had a box of cranes I forgot to add. Here's what the 1000 should really look like.
>>621092>>621091Damn, congrats anon! Any plans on what you'll do with them now that you're finished? For me I'm chilling at 970. I somewhat arbitrarily picked Tanabata as the day I wanted to finish, and now that will be 3 months exactly after my Mom's passing (or of us getting the news. We'll never know when it happened) so now it has some sort of meaning. >>621066The legged crane is a wild pattern, I love it.
>>621154Cute Yotsuba holding a crane. >Damn, congrats anon! Any plans on what you'll do with them now that you're finished?Thank you. I was planning on putting the cranes in a shadow box and giving them away but the results don't look as good as I expected (pic related). I think I'm going to start folding again with solid colors. So for the cranes I have, I'm going to give some away. >For me I'm chilling at 970. I somewhat arbitrarily picked Tanabata as the day I wanted to finish, and now that will be 3 months exactly after my Mom's passing (or of us getting the news. We'll never know when it happened) so now it has some sort of meaning. That's a nice idea. I'll be patiently waiting. What are you going to do with your cranes once you finish? Are you still going to do >>619900 like you said earlier? >The legged crane is a wild pattern, I love it.I messed up completely but I still like the cursed crane. It sits next to my keys so I see it every day. I'll have to try again and maybe try some other variants like a 3 headed crane.
>>621156The shadow box lighted up.
>>621157I might be folding another 1000 because solid-colored cranes look way better in a shadow box in my opinion (pic related). I'm also thinking of installing LED lights that can change colors to reflect the rainbow pattern too.
>>621154Well, I guess that is pretty much where we call it. Here's 998 folded and strung up, with the last two being for her to keep. Simultaneously feels like a shit ton of cranes and far too little. It does feel like so long ago that I started, considering that I started back in October, but I was never in any real hurry to get these completed. It is funny how I picked Tanabata as a convenient day to finish more than anything, and here I am doing just that, but with a bit more meaning.
>>621292Even though this was always the plan, it still was a little sad to see them go. Admittedly, I did end up keeping one of the cranes for myself. As I was moving them, I guess I didn't knot one of the strands particularly well and a bunch fell off. After I put them back on and re-tied the strand, I realized that there was one more that fell off that I had missed. Figured that was sign enough that I should keep just one with me.
>>621293And then, just like that, all 50+ hours of folding reduced to three cranes and a pile of ash. I don't know, it just feels kinda weird to be finished with all of this. Will I ever do this again? Probably not, in all honestly. Folding 1000 of something was quite the journey, and I would consider doing it for something else, but doing 1000 cranes again feels like it would sully what I just did. Not by a lot, but the journey wouldn't be that special to me anymore. Regardless, thanks for all (probably four) of you guys who kept up with this and listened to me waffle on over the past year. Definitely not how I wanted this whole thing to go, but when does anything in life ever?

>>621307It was very humbling, I will say. I never wanted this to be something that I kept as a trophy or anything, so I was always going to get rid of them one way or another and throwing them out felt like it'd just be disrespectful. I wondered if I'd regret doing it after a couple days, but I still think this was the right thing for me to do. Of course, everyone ends up folding the 1000 for their own reasons, so I don't think destroying them is the what everyone else should do once they finish, but it was the fitting end for my journey. Life is all about moving on, and that is want I most wanted
>>611031that was me. still thinking about what could've been. tried to find the same kit online to no avail, similar ones look worse in quiality and are much more expensive. it's a stupid thing to get upset over, but to me it's just another proof that i can't finish anything i start
>>621292>>621293>>621294Congratulations on finishing, anon. I'm sorry about what happened in the middle of your folding journey but it's nice that you finished on Tanabata. >>621323>it was the fitting end for my journey. Life is all about moving on, and that is want I most wantedThese are some beautiful last words to end your journey. It's been a treat folding with these cranes with you. I wish you the best in whatever you do in the future.
>>621942Thanks so much for the kind words, anon. Admittedly, my life's still on hold for the time being, but at risk of turning this into a blog post, I'll just leave it as "we'll see how things end up". I'll say that it is nice to be able to fold things that aren't cranes again. To keep things on topic, I keep a set of paper at work that I usually fold with when I'm bored. It isn't the easiest paper to work with, but here's a horse I attempted today.I will say that I hope someone picks up the journey sometimes soon. I know threads aren't at huge risk of dying here, but I'd be lying if I said that I'd be ok letting this thread die out.As a side not, I guess some of my images got deleted? Not really sure about that one but alright>the front legs on the horseYes, I fixed those after I took the photo >>621520I think that, if it really is something you want to do, you should still pursue it. Cranes are very simple to fold, so you can really use whatever paper you find to fold them with. One ream of A4 can easily be cut down into 2000 squares if you want some easily accessible paper. There is also something special about origami made from found paper, so you could also get creative with were you get your sheets from if you're short on money. I guess what I'm saying is don't let it get to you too much. I've never liked the whole "it's not about the destination" outlook, but I'd hate to see you quit the journey over this. It is a very cool thing to dedicate yourself to that few people rarely try
