Saint Nicolaus of Myra was an early church father who was known for giving presents to the poor children around where modern day Turkey is and showing great mercy and love for children, sailors, repentant criminals, and even brought three murdered children back to life, and was arrested for his beliefs because Christianity was still illegal in the Roman Empire. Shortly after, Christianity became legal and that emperor, Emperor Constantine wanted to have a united Christianity and so brought all the church fathers together at the Council of Nicaea which would eventually yield the Nicaean Creed. One of the attendees of the council was a man name Arius who did not believe in the Trinitarian view of God at all, and proposed that Jesus was a created being. According to legend, Saint Nicolaus slapped Arius for this heretical notion and was kicked out of the council for it.Arianism, that is the belief that Jesus was created and had a beginning and thus wasn't God became so pervasive that only the Christians in Alexandria still held a trinitarian view, but Saint Athanasius was able to refute Jesus being God through the scriptures, thus, saving Christmas as the celebration of the Word becoming flesh here on Earth so that we can all be saved and be worthy of being before God and being forgiven of our sins.Let us remember Saint Nicolaus this Christmas for the charity he practiced in life and defending the spirit of Christmas from those who would muddy it.
