Rather, it shows a gradual decline in the currency, and then a sharp collapse while the empire was already collapsing due to the Crisis of the Third Century. Such data supports the assertion that currencies can collapse during times of great instability, but everyone knew that. It does not support the claim that the collapse of a currency is a cause or even just a predictor of an empire's collapse.
