Not fast enough. We're five years or so away from great AI companions. Putting them into robots will take longer, like ten at least.
>>472777735Main barrier is having batteries that are efficient enough.A certain amount of it can be offloaded (like the ability to chat to her and provide a realistic voice) to your computer or the cloud. But what's tricky is making a robot which is able to perform a wide range of skills, have precise motion (with a lot of motors big and small), that can last for at least a day before having to charge it.I'll put it to you another way, a typical smart watch lasts 1 or 2 days right? That's basically just a small computer with a bunch of sensors for things like your heart rate. Imagine the amount of sensors, motors and compute required to control the important muscles in a person, it's going to be a drain on any battery.A proper innovation might be to develop new muscle technology. Like synthethic muscles that still move and feel realistic and are more power efficient. Our bodies are naturally very energy efficient. Your body makes use of elastic properties and tension in order to use less energy to do things. Hold out your hand and relax it, turn it torwards you to face you. Notice how your fingers are slightly curled? That's because it's very efficient to go from that state to a flat palm or a balled fist, your hand is already sort of the way there, it just needs to adjust and expend some energy to move the bones. The added benefit of something like 3d printed bones + artificial muscles is that once you add in things like a thin layer of silicon and then some real skin on top, it will feel basically the same as the real thing. Whereas with a robot with electric motors, you'll hear and feel the "whirr" as it moves limbs.
