Every politician I've worked for has been jaded and cynical behind closed doors. Whatever passion they originally had for politics inevitably gets blunted by rote bureaucratic incompetence and the overwhelming power of lobbyist groups (some you're not allowed to publicly criticize without literally risking the life of your kids).
