This region is home to a lot of white nationalists and other right-wing militia groups, but apparently is also one of the most left-wing places in the USA as well (one is mostly on the coast and the other is mostly inland, but still). How did this happen?

When Oregon was made a state it banned all blacks from entering it. Some of the most radical racists settled in the west, who were politically opposed to the south. Around the first red scare international communists organized in the pnw in the shipyards and the lumber mills and put in a concerted effort to start a communist revolution there

>>472861896Grew up there over 20 years ago. High school had about 2000 kids of which two were negro and about 15 were Hispanic. Major demographic changes have occurred since then and it is no longer really a white place anymore.
Huge swathes of Washington and Oregon are populated by hispanic migrant agriculture workers.
