The "authentic" recreations of old styles of performance are much more rigid in tempo especially for baroque music, but there is still al lot of room for moving the tempo around as a means of expression. Depends on the conductor or soloist really. Compare how Glenn Gould played Bach (like a metronome on speed) to older styles that had more romantic, looser tempi. For Bach I prefer the former, but for Beethoven, if you listen to an old Furtwangler conducted performance, he stretches out tempi and gives the music an incredible expanding feel, like it is stretching out past the horizon and into heaven, like time is expanding and echoing into the ancient past and future simultaneously, like watching a massive thunderstorm from on top of a mountain, where you can almost see the face of God. It's hard to put into words.
