>'Nuclear fusion prototype will be 'UK's Nasa moment'

A nuclear fusion energy plant being built in Nottinghamshire has been described as the "UK's Nasa moment" as it races to become the first of its type in the world.

The experimental work, based at the decommissioned West Burton A power station near Retford, is aimed at creating a new energy source.

The project, called Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), was showcased at a launch event on Tuesday in Gainsborough, just over the border in Lincolnshire.

Nuclear fusion recreates the same process that powers the sun and if plans are approved, backers said the project was expected to be constructed by 2040.

Fission is much cleaner than alternative sources but the waste produced is still very radioactive and environmentally harmful, and there's no feasible way to recycle it or dispose of it besides sticking it in lead boxes and hiding them underground

(Theoretically) Fusion power just produces helium plasma which then cools into helium, no radioactivity involved. Granted in order to make the plasma you'll need tritium, which is highly radioactive and currently can't be efficiently bred.

one of the properties of fusion that makes it attractive
is that if something goes wrong
the reaction stops itself.
part of the reason we don't have fusion generators yet is that it's hard to create the conditions for fusion to take place.
if you don't get those conditions exactly right, fusion won't occur.
it's a very safe technology.

Is never gonna happen, or maybe it will if they figure out how to charge people, maybe that's the reason why they make the process so expensive, instead of cheaper alternative for free energy out there.

>>
>>475724730
It's at a research level still as there isn't even a concept proven to yield net overall energy positivity so there is no commercialization. For investing I'd save my money lol but if you insist find a massive energy corporation that you think is likely to push towards fusion if/when a concept and method is proven.

Such a long scam. Amazing how they have kept it going all these years.

Fusion doesn't exist. The Sun is electric. That is why we rotate around in on a plane, right angle forces. The Sun is not consumed.

"Fusion" power is total nonsense.

With respect, it is not a technology. Nothinghappenshire. There are no working examples.

Yes you can fuse elements with enough electrical discharge at high enough current. No you are not producing energy.

Yep. Is AC so you can do one-way. The Earth is a big enough capacitor.

If I had a power station and could fiddle the cycles so there was a net flow, I could make an earthquake as it eventually built up enough charge the far end to force a return path. No one would miss one cycle per 10,000 but it would build up.

>According to the UKAEA, STEP is designed to complement, not replace, private-sector development of fusion
So once again, the UK is going to do some token spending that is nowhere near the amount needed to accomplish anything, then get mad when the project inevitably doesn't accomplish anything, and finally cancel the project in favor of austerity measures.

God, it's no wonder the UK doesn't make anything anymore. Even France, with it's retarded bureaucracy, is a better place to try new things.
