A long queue formed one evening at the Tim Hortons coffee shop a short walk from the largest Sikh temple in Surrey. Patrons speaking Punjabi, one of India’s 22 official languages, requested French vanilla lattes resembling sticky, sweet chai the way it’s made back home. They also ordered boxes of Timbits doughnut holes reminiscent of syrup-soaked Indian treats called mithai. In some Surrey social circles, Timbits have replaced traditional ladoo sweets as gifts for births, wedding announcements and home visits. “It’s like they are Canadian-Punjabi food,” local blogger Raj Thandhi says of the chain that launched its 30th franchise in India this year.
