When seeing a tank push then, you either try to hold them off with TDs in ambush, infantry in rough terrain or wheeling out a tank unit of your own; artillery cannot be relied on to stop a determined push since they are not accurate enough.

By "novel techniques," I mean doing things like making the driving bands on shells out of sintered iron rather than copper, making shell bodies out of concrete, making gun tubes out of multiple welded segments, etc. All these techniques have precedents, by the way - see "German Artillery of World War II," by Ian Hogg.

Cast Iron is strong enough to withstand the comparably lower forces it experiences when shot through a mortar (compared to a howitzer, which usually use forged steel shells) and due to it's brittleness it has excellent fragmenting characteristics.
