>Yeah. The university students were part of the ground crew that was collecting telemetry or issuing the final guidance commands to the missile. The topmost booster on a nuclear-tipped R-7 failed to separate, and the rocket careened into the ground. The ground crew were monitoring the path in their tent, realized their shit was fucked, evacuated, and braced for impact. The thermal wave hit first, burning anything that would burn (all their fur clothes) and then the shockwave followed shortly threafter. The three people taking photos of the booster separation (they had to document the test, after all) died immediately from either thermal shock or the blastwave. A few of the people from the tent were blown away by the blastwave. One of them got hit in the head with a rock. The others who survived the blast knew they were super-dead from radiation poisoning, and decided to just lie down and freeze to death, hopefully preserving their own bodies for purposes of later study regarding the effects of being exposed to a nuclear blast. The autopsy reports never revealed the condition of the internal organs of the group.
Fascinating. Thanks!

It's just a theory based on some hunches. The USSR never tested any nuclear missiles in '59. Never mind the fact that the first U2 plane that was shot down was flying directly over this area.

Protip: look through the photos that the group took, and look into the sky. There's absolutely no reason for a bunch of college kids in '59 USSR to be wasting so much film on a trip in the Urals in February. They were just documenting the booster stage separation in a very out-in-the-open way. I'm sure their work went on to improve the design of the Soyuz launch vehicle. S'why it's still used to this day.

The Soviets had plenty of tracking/telemetry facilities already; as I mentioned in the previous bread, I don't think they'd even be able to *see* any launches from there, whether from Baikonur or from Plesetsk; launches from Plesetsk were to the north, over the sea. The transmitters on e.g. Sputnik 2/3 are very different creatures from the equipment used to downlink telemetry - they operated on different frequencies, and in the 1950s/1960s, the apparatus required to actually record telemetry wasn't portable. All the Soviet ranges had extensive provisions for telemetry, visual tracking, etc.; there was no need to have teams of hikers to lug (inadequate) equipment to remote spots.

Here's a Swedish-language article - the Wikipedia page links it - on a similar incident.

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/jamtland/atta-omkom-i-landets-svaraste-fjallolycka-anarisolyckan

It wasn't in the Pyrenees, but in Sweden; anyway, this time round, there was one survivor. The effects of katabatic winds compelled the hikers to abandon their tents and seek the best available shelter, but they fared poorly afterwards.

On a related note, you might have read/heard things about "phantom cosmonauts," perhaps in connection with a pair of Italians - the Judica-Cordiglia brothers - at a place called "Torre Bert." It's all nonsense; Astronautix has some interesting write-ups about it. Incidentally, despite the fact that
these accounts have been known to be arrant nonsense for decades at this point, apparently there's TikTok videos of the purported "recordings" these brothers made and relating their extravagant accounts exactly.

With that, I'll bid you good night.

we’ve been through this a dozen times, natos outdated supersonic ata missiles make their airforce more or less obsolete, it doesn’t matter if the R37is fired from a mig31 or a su57 when it outranges natos best ata missile by 2x. the in hope for NATO if they were to face russia in air combat is the equivalent of airborne meatwave tactics where, if they fly 3x the numbers, maybe a few jets can get close enough to their russian counterparts to fire outdated meteors or whatever at the russian fighters.
The only role NATOs vaunted airforce can take in actual combat until their missile technology can catch up to russias is fireing cruise missiles.
This is just one among many reasons why NATO have refused to actually fight Russia this whole war. But a significent one.

>Romania has dramatically increased its defence budget, from $0.7bn over 2019-20, then $5.5bn over 2020-22, and in a budget passed in December 2022 the defence spend was lifted to $8bn in 2023.
>This total arrived at from this year-on-year increase of 45.2% over the period represents a significant proportion of Romania’s GDP, standing at 3.2% for 2024-28, well above it’s Nato spending commitment of 2%.

Seeing geedeepee is a jewish scam, the military spending is most likely 10-15% of the real things produced in the country.

Another thing where Nato have a disadvantage is that the majority of their airplanes are crappy F16s with relatively short range while Russia is mainly using longer range SU27 variants. This means that Russia can operate their airplanes further away from the front and from danger.
It will be harder for Nato to destroy Russian airplanes on the ground while it is going to be easier for Russians to do the same to Nato.
Also Russia's air defences are just straight up better than Nato's so that makes even easier to defend their airbases deep inside the country from nafo missile attacks.

Doubt israel is ready yet. They are ''negotiating'' with the USA, which means trying to drag them into the war.Until they think they can do that they won't start their jew chimpout.
Even with the massive dominance of the US middle eastern policy the US is resisting this war because its just so much against current US objectives. It makes no sense for the USA to get into a large middle eastern war while they are getting their ass kicked in ukraine and China is outcompeting them.

>a team of high IQ white males with engineering backgrounds could fix that plane in mere months
I reckon the problem is more systemic than that.
I found this on plebbit that mentions just a small part of it https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/49j21e/eli5_how_the_f35_such_a_software_mess/

>I worked on simulation software for Lockheed Martin
>the chips were at best in the neighborhood of, say, an 80386 chip from the mid-80's. You can find Arduinos with more processing power. In addition, since much of the hardware absolutely must perform correctly every time, dynamic memory was disallowed: everything had to be on the stack, nothing on the heap, so you never risked a memory leak or stack corruption by overallocating from the heap.
>Everyone and everything has to go through security procedures. Working in classified areas with no access to the outside world 1) eliminates many good software engineers from consideration due to not passing the security screening and 2) slows development: no access to the Internet or reference materials, everything brought into the area has to be brought in on write-only media (cd/dvd), and everything must be reviewed by a classifier to receive its level of security clearance. Even the software that makes up the development environment has to be screened - just try asking to get something installed on a classified machine. I was often programming in Notepad, which is not fun, because it was the only screened text editor available on that machine.

IIRC it is also a monolith, so every change requires a full system rebuild/compilation.
Just consider what this means for upgrades to the 360 IR bubble. What happens if the new cameras have twice as many pixels and maybe twice the sample rate? Enjoy working with the memory management for that... lmao.

Sounds like a very efficient system to develop, not to mention cheap..

>"Super secret mobilisation in Russia"

That was a nafo talking point since the Russians did a limited mobilization. They dropped it when Kursk offensive happened in favor of other narratives. That's when they stopped talking about Russians conscripts in ukraine and admitted that Russia isn't using conscripts in ukraine but only in Russia. Also they admitted that the Russians get their manpower from volunteers. Then the narrative changed that ukrainians went into Kursk, killed conscripts teenagers and this is going to collapse Russia because their mothers will protest or something. Before that the narrative was that Russia is secretly mass drafting people and sending both reservists and conscripts to ukraine, they were so dumb that they didn't even differentiated between conscripts and reservists for around 2 years lol.

first one isn't true, they had to move units from the reopened kharkov front (group north) to kursk. you can tell from the lancet videos they were uploading with north logo on it. that southern border area of kursk region near veseloe is also being defended by russian paratroopers which are their best units. they've held out for weeks against leopard 2's, strykers, CV-90's, and yesterday even bradley's from the 47th mechanized brigade. hohols moved the 47th from pokrovsk to kursk to try and force a breakthrough but so far those paratroopers there are holding and raping every vehicle in sight and saving niggerasimov from another humiliation. imagine if the hohols broke through there and ran towards the river and cut off the entire russian force.

The problem Israel has is how to effectively bomb Iran from that distance. They will ultimately lose in a tit-for-tat exchange of ballistic missiles. To do damage to the Iranians ability to strike back they would need to massive hit on missile sites and airfields. This would require a large formation of Israeli jets to cross over either Iraq or Saudi Arabia.
The safer bet is Saudi Arabia. But how would that square with the kingdoms supposed neutrality on the matter? Is allowing Israel to strike from your territory an act of aggression against Iran itself?
They either need America to enter the war against Iran directly or they'll just get embroiled in a ballistic missile exchange that'll end up hurting themselves more than Iran

The stupid thing about the F16 is that it was designed to be a light, cheap air superiority fighter (and/or interceptor).
In reality it did not do that and was not suitable for it, the F15, which I will remind you is older than the F16, remained in that role perpetually and does to this day.
The F16 ended up being a bomber. The majority of its use was dropping bombs on goat herders in the desert, essentially the airframe was modified into some kind of nigger rigged Su24 equivalent, or I guess you can look at it as the replacement for the Aardvark or whatever, I forgot much about that one plane.

>But it sounds like the solution is to just design a better plane instead of unspaghettifying the shitfest that is the F-35
I mean... They could start with a good airframe that has some margin to grow rather than trying to make the omnijet from day one.
A jet that turns out to lack critical features (like DIRCM) but having no place to fit it because the "extra everything in the smallest space possible" already meant that those small potential compartments that could be used were already occupied and the cooling/CPU/memory capacity was already maxed out.
The F-22 has a similar issue with no place to fit an IRST targeting system.

The F-15 imo is a beautiful example of this, as is the Gripen (in particular the E version).
They can be expanded, and are expanded, with more sensors and features etc and still have room to grow.
And the basic airframe is good as well.

For the "lower cost" 6th gen, I guess they will make the same mistakes again since the systems and processes that spawned the mistakes are still the same.

I think the biggest problem with the F-35 was trying to stick STOVL capability in there, the vertical engine messed up a lot of the internals. The J-20 is the chink copy and by all accounts it's doing well simply because they dropped the vertical takeoff function and just gave it a twin engine instead.

The biggest problem with the F35 is that the base concept is inadequate.
I will remind you, the F35 originated from the JSF program, which stands for Join Strike Fighter.
That tells you everything you need to know about its failure.
Joint - development is spread across the planet on political terms. Every participant was fighting against every other participant to get as much of the work on their land. Except most of those dislocated jobs were bloat. I expect the Americans had to ignore a bunch of the development that was paid for and substitute their own.
Strike fighter - this thing was designed to get past 1980s era Soviet air defense complexes and bomb an ammo depot or whatever.
What is conspicuously missing is any mention of air defense, which is a bonus functionality that got tacked on, not quite as an afterthought, but certainly not as the chief priority.
Which is why the F35 is slow and relies on stealth for any kind of confrontation against the enemy. Except the year is 2024 and radars and air defense in general has progressed to the point where stealth is helpful, but not enough to keep you alive.
Also, the munitions it can fight with are in far too short supply because the US has a bunch of glide bombs they can't drop against a functional AD and relatively few missiles which is what you need to break a functional AD system. And their missiles are largely subsonic at that.

>I think the biggest problem with the F-35 was trying to stick STOVL capability in there, the vertical engine messed up a lot of the internals.
I mean, pic rel was the OG concept.
A moderate range fighter jet, with shorter range for the USMC.
Without VTOL it had long enough range to beat the F16 by a large margin and thus be a good enough replacement for the Air Force.

The problem was when the USN joined the party and demanded that it fit on a carrier (ie shorter) and also had longer range (made it bulkier and forced everything to be more densely packed).
>The J-20 is the chink copy and by all accounts it's doing well simply because they dropped the vertical takeoff function and just gave it a twin engine instead.
The J20 has nothing to do with the F-35, except for being a stealth fighter.
Not only is it a twin engine fighter jet, it also uses a canard wing configuration and has 4 weapon bays rather than 2.
It is also 0.5 mach faster and has almost twice the range as the F35.

It is much more similar in principle to CALF (pic rel), but it is ridiculous to say that it is based on the F-35.

The FC-31/J-31 could be considered based on the F-35 but the only source for that is "western analysts" insinuating that two aircraft designed for the same general task ending up with somewhat similar shapes have to mean one copies the other.
That has happened multiple times before.
>Form follows function, and if you design your aircraft to similar specs your aircrafts will look similar.

Just look at the heavy stealth drones now.
Why are they all looking like flying triangles of a similar size and similar sweep angle?
Same with the next gen subsonic bombers, why are they all looking like B2/B21/H20?
Because they have the same or similar design goals.

I know they have a high center of mass, but the amount of them laying in some field completely overturned is still ridiculous, how does this shit even happen

most missiles are not shot down. most shaheds are. also rybar is the one who made the chart so why get butthurt at me. i said the night before none of those shaheds would get through and according to rybar they indeed all got shot down except for 1-3 near odessa (and oh look, that was the only place we got videos from confirming the hits). they were effective when they first arrived but once hohols realized how easy they are to shoot down if you concentrate larger caliber cannons along the approach areas, it became very easy to destroy them. they are very slow, big and loud, you can detect them easily and you have all the time in the world to shoot them down. hell they probably have women manning the gun crews.

I bwlieve they recently changed doctrine, missile command is now given to division commanders and not a separate entity anymore. Apparently this is a return to Soviet doctrine. So then it becomes more disperse, one division will use them a lot, others will save them up. Maybe in this case intel wasn't solid or they knew the layout of the building and had very precise intel.

from GAO:
https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-24-106909.pdf
According to Lockheed Martin, the supplier that produces the integrated
core processor is delivering this component late and with quality issues.
The integrated core processor is a key hardware component of TR-3
hardware. According to program officials, as of February 2024, the
supplier delivered about 61 percent of the integrated core processor sets.
Lockheed Martin representatives stated that the hardware supplier has
faced setbacks in increasing production to meet the F-35 assembly line’s
needs due to supply chain issues, workforce shortages, and product
quality testing challenges. While supplier deliveries have improved over
the past year, the supplier continues to experience delays and integrated
core processor shortages persist, according to program officials. The
program office stated its goal is for the supplier to return to sufficient
production capacity by December 2024.
These hardware shortages caused Lockheed Martin to implement
workarounds in aircraft assembly. For example, to mitigate the integrated
core processor shortages, Lockheed Martin uses a pool of eight rotatable
TR-3 hardware kits—that include integrated core processors—to keep
aircraft assembly moving at a normal pace. These rotatable TR-3
hardware kits are installed only for production and are removed prior to
the completion of the aircraft. However, all aircraft will need to have
permanent TR-3 hardware kits reinstalled before they can be delivered to
the military services, international partners, and foreign military sales
customers, according to program officials. This mitigation plan i
