I am so confused about this $50,000 tax deduction she brings up whenever she discusses small businesses. Tax deductions are in place to reduce your tax liability. Under Australian tax law whenever allowable deductions exceed assessable income a tax loss is created. The tax loss is carried forward in future financial years and is applied against any future taxable income until the tax losses have been extinguished. The way Kamala talks about it as something which assists in starting a small business is as if it's actually a tax credit which would give you a refund of $50,000 less any tax payable for that first year of business. So which is it?
