It's actually very easy to explain. People who normally never vote, suddenly gave a shit because Covid was affecting their lives. They were trapped in their houses, and their friends and family were dying, so they voted for the candidate who was taking Covid seriously. But now that Covid is completely accepted as a normal part of life, most of those people went back to not voting. Also combine that with various other things like Kamala getting forced on the democrats instead of having a primary, her stance on Gaza, etc, more democrats simply stayed home rather than vote.
