A school scandal is rocking Berlin! The Friedrich Bergius School, once a model educational institution with 400 pupils in Friedenau, has become a flashpoint. Bottle throwing, firecracker explosions and beatings are the order of the day.Every day there is violence and threats from pupils at the secondary school (a merger of a secondary school and a high school): the dramatic situation was described in a seven-page incendiary letter that B.Z. received. First the “Tagesspiegel” reported.Pupils live in fear. The perpetrators: fellow pupils. On average, around 85 percent of the pupils there are immigrants. Many come from precarious backgrounds, often refugees or children who barely speak German. There is a “threatening propensity for violence and verbal abuse,” especially among male pupils. The management and its teachers continue to reach their limits.The incendiary letter states: “Not a day goes by without verbal insults and threats against teachers from pupils.” Pupils often “throw filled plastic water bottles with full force into groups of pupils standing together, but occasionally also at supervising teachers.”Added to this is the “deliberately staged firing of firecrackers.” Pupils also hardly dare to go to the toilet. This is because they are often filmed or photographed going to the toilet, despite the ban on cell phones. Sometimes, firecrackers are even thrown under the stalls.Problem: “Since the end of corona, we have noticed that parents' educational responsibility is contributing less and less to enabling our pupils to attend school normally.” And further: “70 percent of seventh graders can no longer read analog clocks.” This creates an extreme additional workload for teachers. Pupils played truant and incidents of violence made lessons almost impossible. Until Berlin's strictest principal, Michael Rudolph, took over in 2005. Rudolph came as a last attempt. He reorganized the school through rules and sanctions. Within four years, the school was back in demand.In order to solve today's problems, the Senate Department for Education is in contact with the school and the responsible school inspectorate: “We are in contact.
