The US relationship with france never recovered from their own revolution turning so bloody, the execution of more moderate reformers, and the rise of napoleon ousting the forces in their government who were so instrumental in the founding of out nation. I'm pretty sure more americans remember and hold Marquis de Lafayette in high esteem than frenchmen do at this point.
