A big component of modern society are humiliation rituals that work to create a demoralized population. They are often justified by the majority of people with the reasons they have been taught. Let me give you some examples: The security checks at airports. You are made to take off your shoes, belt, empty your pockets and everything and when you go through the machine, but it still beeps, it's not over. Someone has to touch and frisk you down to make sure you... aren't hiding a bomb in your jacket or some retarded reason. You can refuse, sure, but then you're not getting on your flight. Most NPCs, even though they are bothered and annoyed by it, will still justify it with the official reason of "it prevents terrorism". It doesn't. 8 out of 10 times you can smuggle forbidden items through security. But that's not the purpose. The purpose is to humiliate you and remind you that you are a peasant that has to get violated if he wants to enjoy the privilege of flying.
Another one is the ridiculously bright lights on commuter trains. You wake up early in the morning to get to your slave cage just so you can make enough money to survive another month. You get on the train and you notice that the lights are blinding. It's 5AM on a winter morning, the sun will rise in 3 hours. Your eyes are not adapted to the LEDs all of a sudden. You may want to take a nap because you're incredibly tired, for it is wholly unnatural to wake up at 4:30 AM during the winter. You bring even those eye covers with you. The light still pierces through the fabric. Besides that, you notice that the beeping noises the doors make when the open are insufferably loud. You look for the reason why it's like this and it turns out it's an EU-wide law to supposedly "help blind people orient themselves". Have the blind people campaigned for this? Do they want this? No! It's just politicians who want to torment you more and they need to find a reason. The reason for the blinding lights are so that you don't fall asleep and miss your stop, you peasant. Who do you think you are? You need to be alert and get off where you're supposed to so you can work! That's the reason.
You get to work and you have a dress code. You're blue-collar. You understand safety boots and high-vis vests, but you also need to wear the baseball cap they provide for you. Not a reinforced baseball cap, just a normal blue baseball cap. It doesn't cover your ears when it's still cold in the morning, so you might prefer a beanie or you don't wanna wear anything on your head. You can't. You have to suck it up and let your ears get frozen. Why? What could possibly be the reason for this? You see, in case something falls from above, so that it doesn't fall on your head directly. We have decided for you. You wear it or you're out. Also, if you get injured and don't wear all 6 protective items at the same time, you won't get insurance money. But maybe you don't care about insurance money and still decide to risk it. You're not allowed. The reason is the reduction of your agency and individuality.
