Pro audio engineer here with ~25 years of film/video experience. Doing forensic analysis where your source material is a mix of shitty streaming codecs derived from who-knows-what original codec on unknown hardware is an absolute waste of time. Example: this is the video from the guy who was recording the whole event (and unexpectedly the aftermath) for some sort of documentary or student journalism project. Around the 11012 minute mark he's chatting with 3 students and some other people off camera, and mentions he's using a micro 4/3 camera. a semi pro setup. Notice how the audio is (with the students) is several frames off from the video. that's after only about 12 minutes of shooting, and errors like that are cumulative.Why? Because the popular nominal frame rates for video are 24fps (if you want a film look) or 30fps (for smoother action). But in reality the rates are 23.98 fps and 29.97 fps, due to historical engineering reasons - electricity runs at 60hz in the US and this created an interference problem in the early days of broadcast TV, so the frame rate was offset slightly to compensate. This is called drop frame encoding (because you skip a frame periodically to overcome the sync drift0) and it's absolute pain in the ass to conform audio and video if they're not configured correctly. Flash forward to streaming video from your phone, and a lot of codecs have problems with sync drift because most software engineers neither know nor care about this, and many of them are not even in the US so they don't have to think about it. If you are not manufacturing specifically for the pro market, why would you care? Even if you are manufacturing for the pro market, if things are set up correctly it's the editor's problem to fix.Bottom line is that video and audio are separate streams at the software level and you cannot rely on them to be synced correctly OR consistently. Sync will get worse depending on how long the camera has been running. Sorry.
