Watching Gabe Kidd and Kaito for the first time ever.

I think I like Kaito's wrestling but he's bad at working his offense as far as I can tell.

Is there anyone else in NOAH who is like him insofar as they are not boring wrestlers? Because my impression of NOAH is that it is boring.

I'm increasingly jaded.

I value high workrate rooted in a wife variety of wrestling throws, but properly built up progressively through a match with sound psychology.

I disdain restholds, overreliance on brawling, overreliance on submissions, constant pinfall attempts, dead obvious choreography, lack of in-ring storytelling, common match openers, and fighting spirit spots in an average match

Why is shootstyle so good bros? It's better than regular pro-wrestling and better than MMA. Even random matches the quality of the work is leagues above everything else. The algorithm popped out Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Yuko Miyato from UWFi in '94 and I was hooked from start to finish.
As an aside, black trunks with red kneepads/boots/kickpads is a great look that more people should use.

>>
>>14984792
I haven't watched much, but from what I've seen the pace is nowhere near as fast as old school shootstyle. This may be due to the lack of ropes making quick movements a little dangerous in case you fall off the mat.
What really stands out about oldschool stuff is just how fast and smooth it is. I don't know if it's to do with mediocre training or the real talent now going into MMA instead, but the shootstyle of today really pales in comparison when it comes to intensity and skill levels. The crowds were also hype af back then.

>mfw reading through the list of Triple Crown title matches during the Four Pillars Era
IT'S TIME FOR THE SAME EVENT
I know a lot of the matches are legendary, but over the span of seven years, it's pretty much only Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Hansen, Williams, and Taue ever having matches for it. If I was following along during real-time, I think I would have a hard time staying engaged.
>>
>>14993024
it would be easy without high speed internet that lets you watch all the matches in one sitting
>>
I have to wonder if Noah is capable of rehabbing Kaito in the eyes of the audience. His drawing power seems pretty shaky if you look at his match with kenoh at korakuen, the tag league challenge, or grand ship. The Wagner match did fine, but more evidence would point to Kaito not being a draw.
>>
>>14993297
It's easier now because we can pick and choose the absolute best matches to watch. Besides the wrestlers I listed, literally the only others to challenge for the title during that era were Gary Albright, Jun Akiyama, Johnny Ace, Vader, and Yoshihiro Takayama. That's just eleven wrestlers over the course of nearly eight years. For comparison, there were twenty-nine different wrestlers to have IWGP title matches in that same time period. Despite how fantastic so many of those Triple Crown title matches are, it would seem very difficult to remain interested in the same few matches again and again. I now understand why NJPW always out-drew AJPW during this era.

After watching some late 80's and early 90's stuff I feel like most of the great stuff from that era is only just good by today's standards. I recognize a lot of that has to do with me not having a strong emotion connection with the matches seeing as how I did not follow those feuds in real time, but the level of the top tier in-ring at least during golden age NJPW ('14 to '19) was just different. Who knows how long it will take for us to have another era so insane.
>>
>>14995204

>>

>>
One match I really did love from that era as The Olympics vs. Revolution from '89 for the tag titles. That match was fantastic.
>>
>>14995204

>>
>>14995204
Golden age of New Japan was the 90s. Any of the Musketeers had more charisma in their little finger than the lucharesu fujoshi bait talent of recent times. Plus NJPW vs UWFi is the greatest feud/invasion angle ever and still super exciting watching it now.
There may not be as many flips or high spots, but the level of the basics is so, so much higher than it is now (it actually looks like real grappling) and the charisma levels are off the charts.
I remember being blow away by the opening tag matches on either the '95 or '96 NJPW vs. UWFi Dome shows - the speed and quality of the matwork was incredible and the crowd was hot throughout the entire event. I seem to recall Nagata doing a fucking backdrop and the whole Dome exploded. You don't even get that level of pop during the closing stretch of a modern NJPW main event.
As an aside, watching stuff from the 80s and 90s really makes you realise that this whole 'Japanese crowds are respectful and silent' is some Reddit revisionist bullshit.

It's mostly cope from the gaijin's that would go over to Japan and not get over.
>>
>>14995545
That is very true. Some of those crowds were genuinely insane. Even comparing modern sumo crowds to modern wrestling the difference is night and day.

For the record I am not against trying more stuff I just wasn't blown away by what I saw with a few exceptions. And I suspect I'll like the mid 90s more anyway.
>>
>>14995627
Go watch Vader and Inoki from 96 if you haven't. Try to find it with the entrances, and then laugh at Vader falling, but it's okay cause he's based. The crowd is fucking insane throughout it.
>>
>>14995204
Funny because I've been at the point for a long time now where MEWVZ and FLIPZ do nothing for me anymore. I was wowed by that shit when I started getting back into wrestling years ago, but now I can't stand it because of how fake and 'weightless' it all feels. I watched a match the other day with two Mexican wrestlers in their 60s punch each other in the face in the middle of a junkyard and it was infinitely more compelling to me than any spot-fest gymnastics routine wrestling.
>>

I was watching Inoki vs Fujinami the other day and the way the crowd losing their shits over every move was something I’ve never seen before. A hot crowd really makes a difference. I will have to check NJPW vs UWFi since I’ve heard lots of great thing about this rivalry.
>>
>>14995741
Absolutely.
Wrestling is all about reactions. Like Finlay vs Regal from Uncensored 1996 is a great match from a technical standpoint, but the crowd is just so dead throughout it. Now imagine that match in front of a crowd that actually gave a shit and so on.

That being said it can work. There was some great matches during the pandemic era because the wrestlers decided to just beat the shit out of each other to make up for the lack of a reaction
>>
>>14995741
>I will have to check NJPW vs UWFi since I’ve heard lots of great thing about this rivalry.

>>
Just watched this 1996 Kobayashi vs Misawa abridged match:

https://youtu.be/FgiM82ht_Yc?si=VgT-Hr2J-5vz4eZd

This was boring. The wrestling is primitive like Original Trilogy lightsaber dueling. Misawa forgot to sell his arm towards the end. Finishes the match with a simple back bump.

Talk about overrated. Watching this made me see why the worst of modern puro is a thing.

Yeah man, I've watched it so many times and it never fails to entertain. I also love that the guy with the bleached blond hair on team New Japan was a heel usually. It really adds to the feeling that the UWF invasion is a big fucking deal that even the main heel in the company is helping to fight them off.

I posted this match earlier in the thread. Highly reccommend it and it matches all your criteria - hot crowd, quick and smooth grappling that looks real, nasty striking, a real sense of urgency and drama. You know you're in for a good one when the crowd loses their shit when Tamura slaps Yamamoto instead of shaking his hand:

so I've reached the 15 minute mark, and while the first few minutes were significantly better than what I'm used to seeing, it soon became pretty slow and pretty gay

when I said "grappling" I meant flashy throws like Goldust's Snap Scoop Powerslam and Final Cut, not submissions. I can stand submissions when used sparingly, but not when they're the meat of the match, used often and for extended amounts of time.

Attempt appreciated.

I don't know what to suggest. Our tastes are too different sorry. I really like the fact that not everyone in old Japanese wrestling has a choreographed finisher. It's more realistic and exciting that a match can end out of nowhere to me.

Maybe you should just bite the bullet and give the upcoming big Japanese wrestling tournaments like the G1 and N1 an honest chance when they happen, maybe at the end of the day you'd like to just watch something ongoing you can discuss in various places (to a limited degree here) with bits of what you like, even if it's flawed, rather than trying to find the "perfect" wrestling that's already happened

The Kick Out 2.99 podcast goes into insane detail. Found out so much listening to the Nakajima and Shootstyle episodes.
Had no idea that Marafuji was considered good enough to do legit MMA but Misawa refused because he was supposed to be the next generation of NOAH's golden boy and didn't want him to get brain damage.

Also interesting that the NOAH guys do shoot training with Sakuraba at his new gym. Apparently it's a legacy from Baba's time where new trainees at the AJPW dojo had to learn to shoot before they even took a bump. I always thought that was only a New Japan thing. Who would have thought that NOAH of all places would end up more legit than New Japan? Inoki must be seething from the beyond.

Even the hosts describing the play by play of matches has me looking at wrestling in a completely new light - they really highlight all the little flourishes and subtleties that make matches good. Crazy that a couple of part-time podcasters are more informative than Dave Meltzer et al. (at least when it comes to puro.)

Since Baba and classic AJPW are being talked about this is something the hardcore nerds might enjoy. This hardcore forum nerd translated a book that was written by a Japanese puro reporter that was deeply embedded within AJPW for years and it goes super in-depth about the Pillars, Baba, and various other things.
One thing that stands out in particular was that Baba wasn't this genius booker history has made him out to be; he had to be goaded and persuaded by other people into many positive booking decisions throughout the years.

>>
>>15000557
I thought it was common knowledge that Baba was super conservative when it came to booking. Wasn't it Jumbo that basically convinced Baba that Tiger Mask Misawa HAD to beat him or they'd miss a great opportunity to make a new star.
>>
>>15000819
...and that Baba finally gave in on the night of the match (pressed post too early).
>>
>>15000819
Read that link I posted, bro. It turns out a reporter for a pro-wrestling magazine was responsible for a lot of the booking for AJPW, but it was kept secret for years. Even the wrestlers had no idea.

NOAH seems way worse at training up new people compared to every other major promotion.
>>
>>15002620
Been that way since day 1
>>
>>15002620
Yep, it's been that way from the start. KENTA is credited with running a lot of people off during NOAH's best years. If I were a young wrestler, I wouldn't go to NOAH since you seemingly have to wrestle for 10 years or be 40 to get in a main event.
>>
And I know nobody has it, but BJW no longer puts all of their shows on BJW Core. It seems a bunch of them are niconico PPV's only now

Good. Hopefully it dies out fully. If you can't wrestle without blowing shit up, get outta the business. Takashi Sugiura never had to set himself on fire to get over.

It pays tribute to Horst Hoffmann. He was Misawa's favorite wrestler to watch when younger. Although I'm sure he liked green jt was also probably a way to market himself.

>>
There's been a rising amount of people who dislike Misawa in recent years, but I still believe in him.
>>
>>15000557
>After the Osaka show, Misawa and Kawada hit up a bar in the city, accompanied by a crop of younger wrestlers and ring crew. Kawada happened to notice that Keiichi Yamada—that is, Jushin Thunder Liger—was a fellow patron. Yamada, who had lost the national high school wrestling championship to Kawada ten years before, had remained cordial with him. He had even attended the September 4 Budokan show with his wife.
>Misawa was hostile to the notion of commiserating in this way with a wrestler from a rival promotion, at least at this point (he would later become drinking buddies with Hayabusa), and things escalated when Kawada said that he’d go home in that case. To which Misawa responded with a punch.
Misawa sounds kind of like a mark in this moment.

>Kenoh never had a proper long reign with the GHC and he's now starting to show his age
>there are too many lame gaijin. I'll take Chris Ridgeway over Anthony Green, Jack Morris, AJ Clearly, Starboy Charlie, Titus Alexander and Daga.
But with Inamura and Soya returning, there's hope for the future, and I think people aren't giving Ulka Sasaki enough credit, he keeps improving with each match and has had some really good moments. If Kai Fujimura and Ozawa return at the end of the year then the roster looks really good.

Chono wants Japanese companies to lock arms against WWE and AEW:
>After the talk show, Chono responded to an interview and said about the current Japanese wrestling world, "It's probably time for a change. The American WWE and AEW have become big black ships. If things continue like this, they will probably take over." He went on to say, "If I were in New Japan, I would first take over Asia and be on an equal footing with the US. Then I would like to go to war over who is stronger. However, when I think about the industry, I think it would be best to stop fighting like that and make a good treaty and move towards a system of cooperation."

The entire card was pure spectacle and then for the main event it shifted gears to that stiff technical battle of wills. Hideki was beating the shit out of Anzai, but he kept resisting until he opened up the path to victory.

Anzai needs to work on his stamina. He gassed out pretty early on, and Hideki was becoming visibly frustrated trying to work through the match by picking up the slack. The CACC style of most of this match is deceptively exhausting as you are using basically all of your muscles at once. I don't think Anzai was fully prepared for it, despite his athletic background. Learning how to pace for a 6 minute freestyle match is a different animal than trying to carry it for 30 minutes.

Solid card all the way down and the crowd was insanely hyped.

Fun show and I learned a new racial slur from the chat today, Spitz. As in "silence Spitz, no one cares what a white dog thinks."
