It was a babyface promo full of vulnerability from a man whose gimmick at the time was an underdog with a huge heart who wouldn't quit and has his passion consume him. People in the audience were in tears if you go and watch, and it got him more over in the long run.If this promo happened today by Mox or Danielson in AEW or Punk or Sami in WWE then it would be hailed as a work of brilliance.But because Bret memes on it and sheep will always follow the consensus out of cowardice, it has become a punchline

He spent seven minutes making vague and indirect statements suggesting that he felt underappreciated and wanted to step away. The crowd reaction wasn't thunderous, and towards the end the boos seemed to predominate over the cheers. I'd argue that the boos were more characteristic of the general audience reception of this "babyface promo full of vulnerability" because a lot of the cheers were simply the conditioned reflexes of an audience given their cue to cheer when Vince closes the segment.The promo is worse than I remembered. The close-ups of emotional young girls doesn't mean it was an effective means of promoting future wrestling events. HBK returned three months later, as though this promo never happened, to lay the groundwork for his heel run with DX. This promo is indefensible and deserves its meme status. And you, anon, have been outed as a homo yourself.
