>>16733130This cannot be understated. There’s a definite shift in what people expect from a pro wrestling show in Japan these days. You aren’t appealing to middle age salarymen anymore - the growth is coming from young women and families, and those groups rather see a variety show in a ring instead of traditional boring match after boring match. There’s nothing in Japan like DDT, while DG is very locally aimed at fan interaction.

With Aoyagi having more control with Suwama gone we can expect All Japan to lean even more into comedy nonsense. Truthfully, I would not be shocked to see Japanese pro wrestling become WWE-like in the next decade. Tam Nakano's "Japanese wrestling is too complex for people to get into and we need to dumb it down." statement is particularly concerning. Wrestlers are probably looking over at WWE and thinking, why am I trying so hard? My hope is that what people really want is charismatic wrestlers above all else and the fact all the character guys are heels is just a coincidence.

I just worry about the presentation of guys like Honda who, yes, was always goofy, but the cringe dance is a bit much if they want him to be treated as a serious guy. As far as Aoygai goes if he wants to spend another 3 months feuding with Jiro he can go. I'm over him after his dud of a title reign.
>>16741668I said similar stuff earlier >>16737681 in response to another anon. Feels like a shift is on the horizon both in terms of focus and measures to capture the modern native audience. Is this Strong Style or King’s Road?
>>16742272Society style.
Will there be a UJPW show in 2025 that isn't just NOAH/NJPW centered?
>>16742403considering how poorly they all did, I doubt we'll see any at all
>>16742403Sure hope that this deal is dead
>>16742272Sloppy Job Mossad style
>>16742104It has been the case for a while that there is room for other niches, but whether or not they will supplant traditional Japanese pro wrestling we have yet to see. I just do not want to see the full WWE-ization (really what I mean is a shift to sports entertainment) of puro and for it to maintain its identity. I do think at the end of the day New Japan and it's audiences tastes are still closer traditional puro. The real litmus test would be to see what Evil would do on top so we can get an idea of what his true drawing power is. The rejection of Umino who is supposedly the guy for the women and children is at least some evidence that this trend may not be what the audience actually wants. Ozawa is insanely charismatic similar to Naito, but we will see how he draws without Nakamura backing him up. The audience loves character guys that much is clear. I don't necessarily think this means that top end workrate stuff will be causality, but it is still a concern. Plus Dragon Gate which is the closest analog to WWE in Japan doesn't average huge numbers per show, but they run a lot. Worth considering too when people just look at raw ticket sales. It does not necessarily correlate directly to profit, but rather revenue.
>>16742403He's dead, Jim. The shows bombed, and even with a focus on charity, the people did not react well to them. New Japan doubled-down with the AEW relationship, putting more belts on outside talent, and NOAH took a page from them and forged the same type of relationship with WWE. Best-case-scenario is another All Together show if something really bad hits Japan.
>>16742104the other promotions are killing their hype by running the same areas into the ground. New Japan and Dragon Gate feels like the only promotions that does a proper touring schedule around Japan while the other promotions are satisfied running Korakuen 3-4 times a month.
>>16741668>My hope is that what people really want is charismatic wrestlers above all else and the fact all the character guys are heels is just a coincidence.I don't think it's exactly a coincidence, I think it's that heels have an easier time being charismatic. It's just really hard to be cool or have a distinctive personality if you aren't allowed to act at least a little edgy, and the more room you have to be edgy the easier it is
>>16741132DDT does more shows but generally smaller crowds, similar to Dragon Gate.
>>16742571Yeah most promotions run Tokyo into the ground, but I guess in in their defense the Japanese would rather be packed in like sardines then live anywhere else. Like 30% of the countries population live in that city.
>>16743260country's*Also with regard to Kyushu. Aren't they not charging for kids for tickets or something similar. Makes it hard to compare against the rest imo since that is not equivalent business wise compared to other promotions.
>>16743286They're a nonprofit and don't charge for tickets at all. They use a lottery system instead
>>16742272>President's Road, great stuff, terrific, not like that disastrous Sissy Style. Terrible!
>>16742403One of Inoki’s dreams was to hold such events, but his dream was only fulfilled when COVID was raping the business and when puro is dead. Sad shit.
>>16743332yeah thanks.
>>16742513EVIL and SHO are still fairly popular and House of Torture are merch sellers but there has been a definite shift in where they are on the card regardless. Zack being on top too shows there's still definite emphasis on sports based presentation.
>>16743633EVIL has always been a top merch seller even pre-HoT as an aside. HoT has mostly been a midcard act since last year. They played spoiler in the New Japan cup, but were not on top. EVIL had the Tanahashi match in the middle of the WK card, Evil never went above the NEVER belt and HoT was mostly involved in the NEVER 6 man title scene. They kinda feel like a filler act to me rather than a big direction the company is pushing for. Plus Narita is in no way ever gonna get to the level of EVIL so I can take solace in that. At best he'll be a Kanemaru type heel and that's my preferred style of heel anyway.
>>16741845DG with another solid card to start the year. They should hold a 1v1 card every quarter besides the annual King Of Gate.
>>16732072Zesty Inoki
>>16742216Slender Man but it's Baba
>>16731642After counting all of the shows with a confirmed attendance number, here's the average for these promotions.New Japan - 1,686All Japan - 859Kyushu Pro - 803NOAH - 740Stardom - 659DDT - 593Dragon Gate - 580Oz Academy - 561Marigold - 460Tokyo Joshi Pro - 423GLEAT - 415FREEDOMS - 289Big Japan - 220
>>16731642>>16744855When is NJPW's reign of terror gonna end? It's been over 50 years now.
>>16745709They would need a downturn worse than their competitors plus a rise by at least one promotion of monumental proportions. Like having the Reiwa generation completely bomb while having OZAWA be the draw of the century to boost NOAH. It’s just not likely, and you’ll probably just see an overall collapse of the industry in Japan rather than NJPW becoming the #2 promotion.
>>16745709Inoki basically told the other major promotions to take over in the 2000s by fucking up his own company but none of them capitalized on that opportunity long term.
>>16745709Only times were where that was even a thing were the neck and neck with All Japan in the 70’s & 80’s, and the brief period from 2005-2007 with NOAH.

>>16747394is the DG eng commentary cringe?
>>16747518It's meh, Jae is fine, I don't think he's as cringe as some of the Brits other puro companies have chosen as their English announcers he's mostly there to enlighten you on DG lore with Ho Ho Lun there to be fun with his Engrish.I prefer to first watch in Japanese and then if important promos come up I switch over to English as Jae is great for live translation.

>>16745938NJPW wouldn’t have been surpassed even then because the once in a century talent Tanahashi decided to stay, Inoki’s name which is associated with NJPW was still revered even if he done worse than what he did and the other promotions failing to make competent successors to the old guards.
>>16747920Good thing you fell for propaganda. Tanahashi didn't draw but him getting a long reign stabilized the product and let people know what they were getting from New Japan, as opposed to other promotions pushing someone for a few months and then burying them in the undercard.
Ben-K vs Kondo was so fucking good guys
