Everyone talks about how wrestling sucks today, but I think it sucks for reasons no one is quite putting their finger on.

Console wars focus on who's doing it worse, WWE or AEW. But both companies suck for different reasons. WWE sucks because it's 4 matches over three hours with a whole lot of talking and commercials around it. AEW sucks because it's piss-poor storytelling built around poorly booked workrate matches that focus more on gymnastics than anything that resembling an actual fight.

Wresting is best when it's storytelling told through the medium of fighting. That's what the late 90s did so well. Normies tuned in because they wanted to see people fighting and doing stupid shit, not talking at each other.

A TV wrestling show should be no longer than two hours. A TV wrestling show should be a bunch of matches but not necessarily good ones - 7 or 8 short matches, most crap quality, with the main event maybe getting 10 mins top. Less talking, less workrate crap, more entertaining lopsided beatdowns and in-ring shenanigans. More hitting people with chairs post-match and less jabbering on the mic for 30 mins. With entrances and shit you still fill out available time. TV shows should work as marketing to get people interested in bigger shows, which are where the real money is drawn.

The company that figures this out first will be the one who returns to the heart of this thing and starts drawing back normies. Normies tune in just to see stupid crap, they don't care about your Eight Star Tokyo Dome legend or your Bloodline. Tell stories around what happens in the ring.

Unfortunately only the veteran guys can do this nowadays. Modern-day talent is trained to have the best match without having the moves describe any sense of a story. That's why 15 minute promos and packages are necessary to pull some kind of story out.

It's true, but they need to be pushed to get gud.
A lot of it is writing. WWE overly focuses on the promo format and AEW overly focuses on putting out "good" matches.
Really, what people want to see is wrestlers going out and doing wrestler shit. That means more matches. And if you've got 3 or 4 minutes (with extra padding for entrance and post match), there's not a whole lot you have to do in the first place. Come out to your cool theme, make a good entrance. Hit a dude with the ring bell. Talk a little trash on the mic (we're not talking no promos here) then leave so the next act can come out.
You shouldn't need a team of writers for this shit, nor should people have to watch guys do flips and handstands for 15 minutes. Matches were shittier back in the day but the shows were better.
