The world Elysium is a tranquil place [YOU CAN FEEL THE DIGITAL ROT CREEPING INWARDS] filled with illustrious wonders [THAT MUST BE PROTECTED] and lively people [WHO COULD NOT BE PROTECTED]. Adventure is sure to be around every corner. All you have to do is [STOP THE ETERNAL CYCLE] step forward and paint your story upon this canvas!

Where shall you start?

>Utopia in the West, its temperate climes and stable structures appeal to something within you
>Xenokuni in the East, where eight million gods and even more mysteries dwell
>Badlands down South, you shall be born amidst blood, sand and savagery
>>
Since many anons might be new to /qst/, you roll dice like this: "dice+2d6" without the quotes in the email field rolls 2d6. "dice+5d42+23" rolls 5d42+23. "noko+dice+2d6" rolls 2d6 without showing the roll in the email field.

Additionally, only the OP gets to use text formatting like bold, colour and italics.

>Badlands

You see many disjointed, scrambled memories flashing by your eyes. Several of which include sunlit forests, gleaming towers of white and gold and reams of laughter from people you don’t recognize. Somehow it feels warm, despite your current lack of feeling and you feel something tugging at you. Urging at you to seek solace among those safe looking, sturdy walls.

[SAFETY IS AN ILLUSION]

An even larger feeling engulfs you! You are no quiet little weakling, crying out for…that! Fundamentally, your soul snarls at the idea as well as the strange nothing you find yourself in. More memories come to the forefront. Of war! Of blood! Of glory! These folk in the never ending sands cleave limbs from foul, chitinous monsters as they scream their fury to the heavens. By the time you witness a group of foolhardy, ragged younglings get enveloped by an unnaturally quick darkness, your soul is hurtling towards the sands. You barely pay attention to the strange dances and chants of yet another place.

You open your eyes and immediately the sun shines right into them. It BURNS! You jump up, irritated as you wipe at your eyes and head to clear it out. Also, your back and limbs are covered in hot sand! The next few minutes is spent dancing wildly on the sand dune you were apparently napping on attempting to get all of it off.

Eventually, you deem yourself passable (if rather burnt feeling) and take a look at your surroundings. Just like the memories, this Badlands is primarily desert from what you see. Sand ranging from golden brown to pale chalk in color spreads out far, occasionally broken up by scraggly black trees or shrubbery. To your left, you can see some reddish-brown looking caves with several banding patterns upon them. Far ahead of you, you can see a large canyon with some meager looking bridge spanning it. You swear you can also see some two legged silhouettes escorting some lumpy looking thing on 4 legs. And is that some nice glimmering water over there?

Choose one (rolling happens later if the roll choices win)

>Go into the caves. You need some shelter from this sun.
>Try to flag down those two legs and 4 legs, even if they’re ridiculously far! [Medium Roll]
>Water! You are burnt and thirsty and you are hot! [Easy Roll]

Water

Looks like water wins out. I will need 3 anons to roll 1d100. dice+1d100 in options to roll.

Dice Rules for this Quest
I will specify a certain number of d100 rolls needed. How good the outcome is will depend on how many numbers meet or beat a DC.

0 successes: Failure
1 successes: Marginal Success (win with drawbacks)
2 successes: Success (nothing more, nothing less)
3 successes: Crit Success (you win and get something more from it)

Rolling 95+ once is an automatic crit success.

Since this is an Easy Roll, the number to meet/beat is 35.

95+ rolled! Crit Success! kek what the fuck really
>>5949522not counting this one, but another?

The sun of the Badlands looked amazing to you in those memories you saw. But currently this same beautiful star overlooking all those scenes of grand struggle, throwing its golden blessings upon those valiant warriors and innocents? You’d give up anything to LEAP into the sky and SNUFF that skin-roasting, eye-blinding, body-melting monster with a clap of your hands.

But for now, WATER. Your quick, sun-addled scan of the area made you think there were some oases somewhat close by. You run towards where you last saw that glimmer, right around the scraggly brush and twisted looking trees…and there it is! A sweet, blessed oasis you could dive into. Eagerly you jump in, hollering hoarsely and gulping down as much as you can. There’s some vague memories coming to mind about some older man speaking to drowsy, neatly dressed younglings in a large, ornate room about ‘water quality’, but you’re far more interested in the soothing coolness surrounding you. There’s also a few small, slick looking, brown 4 legged creatures with 3 sets of eyes that dart away as you reach for them. You make a game of chasing them in the water before you notice something shiny partially stuck beneath the sand.

Yanking it out and rinsing it, it’s a whitish triangle slightly smaller than your palm attached to a small silver chain. It seems to be opalescent in the hot afternoon light. More memories come to the surface once you see the hue.

An impossibly massive purple/blue tree. A ceiling of a dark room. Sleeplessness. Frustration. Piles of discarded scrolls with calculations for nothing. Deep boiling anger that makes you growl involuntarily.

Before you can think any longer on these visions, you hear voices and footsteps coming closer. Seems like they belong to about 3 people and some sort of slow, plodding beast.

Choose one:
>Remain in the water. It's too comfy here and these people may pose no harm.
>Leave the oasis, hide in the shrubbery to eavesdrop [Medium Roll]
>Sneak out of the oasis undetected [Medium Roll]
>Just high tail it out! Run before they catch you!

Rolls are first come, first served. I was a jobber and didn't specify the DC for a Medium Roll (55) in my previous post. Generally I will ask for 3 rolls, but there may be circumstances where you can get extra die (or less die).

58, 34, 15 Marginal Success!

You silently slip out from the water upon hearing their approach, taking care to step into the softer areas of brush to minimize your noise level. Softer doesn’t exactly mean comfortable to your sore feet, and you end up with a small cut on your left sole from stepping on an errant briar before taking position behind one of the thicker, straighter trees. Keeping low, you watch the strangers like a hawk as they stride up to the oasis.

The gold-hued, four legged, lumpen creature is the first thing that catches your eye. It towers over the three with its knobby legs as it lumbers over to the water. Under the white cloth covering its back, the lumps twitch as the creature lowers itself to gulp down the water. For some reason, you detect something from it that agitates your senses and nearly has you leaping for its throat before you catch yourself.

Besides it, a burly man wrapped in white hums as he holds onto the lead and strokes its neck. His two similarly dressed compatriots retrieve tools and provisions from the saddlebags, brushing it down and sorting out supplies. All of them have worn-looking sheathed knives on their belts. The burly man also has a curved, wide blade at his hip that looks fancier than the other equipment the group possesses.

Once the creature has its fill, the burly man tugs the lead and directs it where the others are sitting. All three of them kneel down and face the gigantic bluish-purple tree, bowing low.

“O Hollow Tree, Great Hollow Tree, accept this thanks from your rotted fruits, your unworthy children, for this boon you have provided.”

Continued (had to break my response in half)
>>
>>5950306
Then they rise and reach for the creature’s twitching lumps under the cloth, eagerly slurping away. Obscene sounds fill the air for a few horrid minutes before they wipe black fluid from their mouths and speak to one another.

Cahaya is the burly one, accompanied by Mikha and Zachar. They refer to each other as brothers and sisters, though you’re not sure if they’re actually family or not. This oasis will be a quick rest stop for them before heading onwards to ‘Craggenrock’ to intercept someone.

”I still think this is a terrible idea, brother! The Tree did not make us warriors!”

Cahaya laughs as he makes a swinging motion. ”A soft, lone Utopian is no threat, even with his piddling cantrips. Couldn’t even get his brother to join him! Shame.” He makes another two handed swing.

”And hiring ARMIS is truly out of the question, brother? That Rexford boy is itching for–”

”HANG THAT LIZARD FROM THE HOLLOW TREE, MIKHA! WE WON’T BE CHEATED! Startled, you jump and almost faceplant into the brush before quickly ducking behind the tree. The lumpen creature’s head immediately turns to where you just were, nostrils widening as it sniffs the air and steps forward. Cahaya draws his scimitar and slowly advances while the others fetch little books from their side.

It won’t be long until they find your hiding place! Choose one!

Some would look upon your current circumstances and claim you’re in clear danger. You have nothing but scrambled memories, minor injuries and a shiny little trinket in this vast desert. Potential enemies are near! Yet you feel no particular fear as you step forward from behind the tree. Is it confidence or stupidity?

Nevertheless, the strangers freeze once they see a…

…staring right back at them. Even the lumpen [DISGUSTING] beast looks flabbergasted!

38, 76, 27 DC 55, Marginal Success!

You jump backwards, quickly covering your bits with your arms as you let out Elysium’s most overdramatic shriek. “EEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK! PERVERTS?!”

Cahaya quickly stomps up to you, face reddening further from anger. ”YOU DARE ACCUSE US OF INDIGNITY? WHA-HOW-YOU ARE AS NAKED AS THE DAY THE TREE SPAWNED YOU, ON THIS INFERNALLY HOT AFTERNOON. His free hand is balled into a furiously shaking fist.

“OH, DO YOU NOT DISROBE FOR A BATH?” You fire back, aggressively leaning in heedless of the large scimitar dangerously close to you.

Both of you are screaming and yelling, flinging accusations of impropriety back and forth. No amount of ”Brother Cahaya, honored stranger, please!” is reining you two in. Your ear twitches as you hear a humming noise followed by a translucent yellow circular glyph separating you from the burly mustachioed rageaholic. You whip your head around to see Mikha, the sole woman of the group raising her right hand with a smaller version of the barrier glyph hovering by her fingertips. Her book is in her left hand, open and displaying something you can’t read from here.

[A WEAK BARRIER GLYPH. IMPRESSIVE ENOUGH FOR A SANDBLASTED NOVICE]

”We have no need to quarrel with other travelers, brother. Is this how you conduct yourself?Mikha’s eyes are fighting to remain locked on your face. ”We can walk our paths in peace.”

Zachar, the smaller white wrapped male, fixes you with a suspicious look. ”You say you were bathing? Why were you out of the water? And burnt like this? He has his little book open and ready too, but has yet to cast.

Mikha absorbs the words first, narrowing her eyes as she takes her comrade’s questions into consideration. Cahaya keeps his scimitar on you.

They’re not attacking…yet. But they seem a bit suspicious of you.
>”Fine. I was robbed by bandits and didn’t want to admit my shame to you. I have almost nothing to my name now in this forsaken desert.” Plausible enough sob story, would they help some innocent victim?
>”Yes, I was bathing. I’ll just leave and forget this happened.” Excuse yourself to leave. Will they let you?
>”I don’t know. I was out in the sands and woke up like this.” It’s the truth. Are they gonna believe you?
>Attack! Suffer not these [FOUL] wretches and their beast to live! [Medium Roll]

>I was robbed

You sigh, shoulders slumping. ”Fine. I was robbed by bandits and didn’t want to admit my shame to you. I have almost nothing to my name now in this forsaken desert.” A total lie, but you see no reason to change tactics.

”So you called us all perverts and shouted at Brother Cahaya just to avoid saying you were robbed?” Mikha facepalms with her spellbook before realizing her barrier glyph is flickering, and quickly regains focus. Definitely a novice. [----------] would’ve torn her technique to shreds before cheerfully laughing about what she could improve…whoever [----------] is.

”Would YOU want to admit it at first to random strangers?” Mikha answers you with a weak ”No…” Where did Zachar slink off to?

Cahaya still keeps his scimitar leveled at you as if it will matter. ”Don’t bother with your excuses, traveler. We can easily fend off whatever half-baked trap this is.”
”There’s no one else around the oasis.”Zachar creeps out from the trees, his eyes glowing a pale blue as he looks at everything before him. He recoils and looks a bit paler when his eyes land on you, the glow vanishing. ”I also saw no magics or anything unusual lying about, besides this stranger here. Brother, sister, I think it best to extend the Angel’s hospitality to her. At least until Craggenrock.”

Cahaya and Mikha object until Zachar slowly says ”The Tree brings many wonders in this world.” and gives each of them a long look.

”Hmph. Cahaya lowers his scimitar as Mikha’s barrier glyph dissolves into yellow light. ”We’ll escort you to Craggenrock, traveler. Then we part ways.”

And just like that, you have temporary traveling companions. A set of white wrappings, traveler’s robes and sandals are quickly shoved on you by Mikha. They’re not quite right for your much taller frame, but you wear them anyway along with your white triangle necklace. You wrap your bleeding left foot and try your best to ignore the throbbing pain all over your skin. You trail behind the group a few paces back since their lumpenbeast snaps its teeth at you whenever you get too close. On your end, you can’t stop thinking of the black fluid that oozed from those tuberous sacks…and how that foulness is within these impure ones.

[YOU COULD SHOW THEM HOW TO DEVOUR THE DARKNESS]

According to your companions, Craggenrock is a 2 day journey from here. They don’t make it sound particularly appealing, but as far as Badlands towns go it's one of the least worst. You should be able to sell your necklace or find work there without getting stabbed. Probably.

While you’re traveling with these people, what shall you do?

Yes, this is based on Holostars EN lore. >Try to get a grip on these strange memories. They might be a good source of information.

Knowledge is power, you think to yourself. And in this hostile land, you could use all the power you need. The visions weaving in and out of your mind show great promise.

Whenever the group stops for a break, you spend your time trying to make sense of what you remember. It’s even better when 2 of them slip away to talk occasionally, still within sight but out of earshot. You can think in peace with only Cahaya’s glowering, Zachar’s questions or Mikha’s nervousness–depending on who they leave behind.
First, you reflect on your knowledge of magic. You knew enough to recognize and judge Mikha’s barrier glyph, perhaps you would know some magic of your own?

You look out at the sea of eager, first time students in the ornate hall. ”While magic can take many different forms, the base components of a successful spell remain the same. Typically, the energy is the mana sourced from the caster themselves, though alternate sources such as blood or souls can be used.” The students are suddenly uneasy, and you can’t help chuckling at their expressions.

”But first, let’s determine how much innate mana you possess. Clear your head, then search for the energy within…

You do as the memory instructs, closing your eyes and searching deep within yourself for that energy. Shockingly, there is a large well of potential mana inside of you. It’s about half full to what it should be currently. MP 5/10

On another occasion, while sleeping, you remember rough hands desperately gripping a rapier and driving it into the heart of an ethereal white, long haired figure. As it shrieked, the world wavered and the thicket of purple-blue branches closed in– Your own shriek earned you the grumbling of your companions and the distinct feeling of being impaled.

Then finally, as you walk behind the group as usual, you sense something [TRULY FOUL tunneling up from beneath the sands before its wavy trail rushes you.

You leap and roll to the side just as a towering jet-black creature bursts from where you just were, the sand erupting outwards.

Some of the hot sand crashes onto you as you scramble back up to your feet, coughing up sand and growling. Wiping your eyes makes it worse! Fuck! You can hear the surprised shouts of your companions before the titan answers with a deep, distorted roar of its own. While you can’t see them right now, you’re certain they won’t be coming to your aid.

You snarl right back at the behemoth while dodging its writhing, coughing up more sand as you do so. If the lumpenbeast was nearly twice a human’s height, this easily was thrice the size of it! The warped, bony masks of the creature plus its ebon coloration trigger another memory in you.

[CORRUPTION BEASTS]
[DESECRATORS OF ELYSIUM]
[WE HAVE LOST TOO MUCH TO RECORDS CORRUPTION]
[KILL. KILL. KILL. KILL. KILL]

Left unchecked, not even the Hollow Tree itself could purge it.

You feel something come loose from within you as you charge at the beast in a wild frenzy!
>Your body breaks and reconfigures itself into a being of nightmares! You are a mess of limbs, teeth and claws.
>Purple-blue, flickering tree roots erupt from the sand, constricting the corruption beast!

If we're a druid sort of spellcaster and don't have access to good proper fireballs, the roots are probably a better call than going loud.

Although I'm interested in seeing what I'm assuming is a partially corrupted MC in the other option, I like the idea of this magic.

>Purple-blue, flickering tree roots erupt from the sand, constricting the corruption beast!

Intent. Focus. Energy. Those are the basic three things a spell needs. The thought comes to your mind in a flash as you run at the writhing monster. Such vileness was an insult to Elysium. To existence itself.

[THE HOLLOW TREE BRINGS FORTH INNUMERABLE THINGS TO NOURISH THE SYSTEM]
You extend your hand.
[THE UNWORTHY PROVIDE NOTHING TO RECOMPENSE THE TREE]
You focus, heedless of the beast bearing down upon you.
[MAY ALL REFLECT ON THE TREE’S GRACE]
You scream-laugh as a vast surge of power bursts forth!

From your hand, three jagged blasts of energy shoot towards the ground. Within moments, several purple-blue tree roots erupt from the sand just as the beast attempts to flatten you! They thicken and tighten rapidly around the behemoth. It bellows its pain to the sky, attempting to thrash free of the constricting roots. They’re holding firm, but you can see parts of it flickering whenever the Corruption Beast strains the hardest.

What shall you do?
>Leave the Corruption Beast ensnared. Those roots are too thick to be easily broken.
>Crush the Corruption Beast, using up your remaining mana for a few hours.
>Ask your traveling companions for help. With the 4 of you, this beast could be purged. [Hard Roll]
>DRAIN THE BEAST. WATER THE TREE WITH ITS ICHOR.

There was a top half to the picture that didn't turn out very well. I will be gone Tuesday, updating quest stuff Wednesday at 6PM EST.

If we get enough juice, we could probably overpower our companions and have more freedom. Or at least, get some respect.

I don't see the others joining us and even if we fail to kill it, we might leave it incapacitated long enough to run away.

>DRAIN THE BEAST. WATER THE TREE WITH ITS ICHOR.

Leaving the Corruption Beast doesn’t seem like a good option to you. The roots would hold, but for how long against such a massive creature? And at the group’s traveling pace, you suspect it could catch up with you. What you’ve seen of your companions’ skills and their willingness to help you doesn’t raise your confidence. You stare scornfully at the bound Beast, imagining its bone masks snapping, dark ichor painting the golden dunes. A grisly end, but not good enough.

Unconsciously, you start floating a few feet from the ground.

[O GREAT HOLLOW TREE]
[ERASE THIS WRETCH AND BLOOM ETERNALLY]

The Hollow Tree’s roots continue to twist around the screeching dark aberration at your command. But instead of constricting it, they forcefully jab deep into the beast. Its screams become deafening, redoubling its efforts to break free as inky blackness flows up the roots. Soon it has none of the blackness holding its body together, the bone masks falling to the sand.

You now have 2 Boons of the Hollow Tree! These Boons are given in exchange for sacrificing Corrupted beings to the Tree, and can be expended to lower DCs or empower a target’s physical or magical attributes temporarily. The more powerful the Corrupted being, the more Boons you will receive.

You also fall to the sand with a yelp once the roots retract, landing on your ass. Someone offers you a hand and you take it without thinking, getting pulled up. It’s Cahaya. His mustache is quivering and he looks at you with awe. Mikha’s stunned, holding the lumpenbeast’s lead and incomprehensibly sputtering.

Contrary to his compatriots, Zachar’s expression is like stone. His eyes are glowing the same pale blue again as he stares you down. ”Back away, brother Cahaya. Robbed of everything by bandits, yet you can destroy a Corruption Beast in that fashion?” His spellbook is open, and you see his hand on his dagger.

”You have that fancy spell and you can’t see the truth!?” Cahaya stomps forward, shaking Zachar by the shoulders. ”This is a miracle from the Tree! It smiles upon us and our mission! Were those roots illusions, brother? Because if not, this can only mean the Tree knows we can prevail.” The burly man’s voice becomes choked. ”That we can be saved at last!

”They were no illusions. But it was a mistake to take this woman with us!”

”But it was your idea, brother! The Tree holds many wonders!” Mikha pipes up.

”The Tree holds many wonders, indeed.” Zachar pushes Cahaya’s hands away, stepping around him to face you. His eyes are still glowing. ”So stranger, what is your real story here? What manner of djinn are you?”

How shall you respond?
>”I don’t even know! I woke up sunburnt, found water, and then I found you! My memories are not much help either.” This is the truth, minus the fact you eavesdropped on them.
>”What about YOUR story? What normal travelers make plans to murder innocent foreigners?” Confront them on what you heard.
>”Cahaya, Mikha, I’m willing to aid you. I’m not willing to get accusations thrown at me over saving you from a Corruption Beast.” Pull Zachar’s comrades into it.
>”I am the one who purges corruption in the name of the Hollow Tree. I shall continue with you!” Attack (how?), you can still sense the foulness in all of your present company.

At this point it's better to just keep the story as simple as possible, without making them distrust us any more by revealing that we eavesdropped on them

Your story? What story? ”I don’t even know!” You throw your hands up, exasperated. ”I woke up sunburnt, found water, then I found you! My memories are not much help either.”

”Convenient. You tell us this now?” Zachar purses his lips.

Instead of feeding him to the Hollow Tree, you explain in further detail what you did prior to meeting them. Of course, you omit the fact you overheard them discussing their true business at Craggenrock. One look at Zachar’s face tells you that he doesn’t completely buy your story. Then again, you did change it three times over the span of 1 and a half days.

”Brother Zachar, you’ve read the tales! Heard our Speaker! You know the Hollow Tree will send its messengers, and that such messengers have strange existences.” Cahaya puts a hand on the smaller man’s shoulder once again before motioning to the vast Tree, and then you. ”What else could a wielder of the Tree’s power be?”

Zachar ignores those words, glowing eyes still boring into you. ”What do you remember, stranger?”

Even now, you have various fragmented memories dancing around in your mind. Some vanish before you can get a proper hold on them, only to reappear at odd times or with strange triggers. You tell the group as much, and regale them with recollections. Of a great city in a climate more temperate than this. Of long hours in various polished halls, speaking to nervous students and hardened scholars alike. Of the darkness in some fume-choked chamber. Of laughter. Tears. Desperation. Death?

Zachar cuts off your rambling, crossing his arms. ”There you have it. She’s no messenger of the Tree, she’s a madwoman who wandered into the desert. Probably a Utopian chasing some stupid academic theory.”

”You call her a madwoman but revere our Speaker?!” Cahaya’s grip on Zachar’s shoulder tightens. The smaller man winces in pain before slapping at the offending hand, eyes flickering for a few moments. The two look like they’re about to argue before Mikha shouts that they need to reach Craggenrock in a few hours.

Zachar strides off towards Mikha and the lumpenbeast, massaging his head as his eyes stop glowing. Cahaya shakes his head and waves you over to walk by him behind the group. ”Don’t mind him, Tree-blessed. He is afraid to see hope.” His hand brushes over his extensive wrappings.
”Many of your visions seem to be from Utopia. Tell me, have you seen anything of TEMPUS?”

Your eyes widen as you double over, lost in an audiovisual barrage of memories.

It hurts. It hurts. It hurts. It hurts. Your mind latches onto three visions…
>A composed young man armored in pale blue light, valiantly crossing blades with a fiend
>The bubbling of a sludgy, thick red substance boiling away in a cauldron
>Cheers of a frenzied crowd as a warrior is sent crashing into the stands of a stone coliseum
>A wyvern, screeching as someone takes it apart with scholarly precision and recklessness
>Tomatoes flying through the air at a gaudy, dramatic stage
>You getting thrown into a wall by a fast, red-black blur
>An impromptu screaming match AND battle
>Peaceful humming by a pond, a man restringing several bows

Pick three. The three with the highest votes will win.

Sorry for the tardiness. Also, next update will be tomorrow as I will be watching Axel's outfit reveal. I will still be around to answer questions.
