The Heavenly Emperor was imprisoned in His very own capital by traitors, and a call for heroes was issued to rescue Him from his imprisoners.

Close to the capital, a Coalition of Heroes has begun its conquest of the Great Swamp, the region holding the current Imperial Capital.

At the other end of the world; the Kindled Alliance based in the Stairway City, their ultimate goal unknown. Do they want to preserve the Heavenly Empire, or see it end?

But little did they know, the Emperor was missing, somewhere out in the woods, as vulnerable as any mortal.

Welcome to Setting Sun, a character-driven worldbuilding game. It is primarily story-driven and generally meant to showcase how settings can be focused on pulling as much drama out of a given circumstance and an array of character relationships rather than listing an assortment of factions.

New players can join, please ready the previous thread for rules.

To the anon who archived this for me, much appreciated!

Escort Party
>Dog instinctively placed his hand on his sword's handle, but the nervous Little Emperor drew his instead. The Courier stepped forward as Dog pulled the Little Emperor back, warning the thugs that they were escorting a powerful sorcerer of the woods. Of course, this was a laughable idea, the thugs knew it was a complete lie. But they didn't know Lings were indeed friends of the animals.
>The Courier made his calls, and an echo was heard above the thugs, up in the trees. A splendid trick, they thought, until the trees above them rustled. Though some of them were spooked, the leader chastised them for being gullible. This was obviously a trick, and there was somebody above them.
>Five thugs emerged from the woods to attack, those with crossbows remained in the treeline to sentry the trees above them. Dog drew his sword and rushed forward, purposely getting himself surrounded to make him a threat to as many thugs as he could. His ferocity was matched by his strength, aggressive strikes to keep the thugs from striking back, but so hard that it would stagger them and free up his flanks.
>The two remaining thugs went to engage the Little Emperor and the Courier, a good match for the Courier but not so much for the inexperienced Little Emperor. While Dog struggled to take on three thugs at the same time, and the Courier was busy with his opponent, the Little Prince became overwhelmed by the brutish thug he was facing. His opponent raised his weapon to strike the Little Emperor, and as it was coming down, a mighty condor dove in and rendered the thug's arm with its talons.
>Feathers fell like snow as the clearing was swarmed by condors, the thugs took off after witnessing such sorcery, and even Dog almost ran off, until he was attacked by a condor, but before any harm could be done, it flew away as the Little Emperor begged it to stop.
>After the thugs escaped, Fina climbed down from the trees, running into the clearing to hug the Little Emperor. She apologized profusely and promised to never run off like that again. Meanwhile, Dog was still recovering from witnessing such an event; this wasn't how the plan was supposed to go. It was far more terrifying than he thought it was supposed to be.

Coalition
>Scouts deployed to capture natives for intel. The Cliff Bottom Village was approached to observe, and its residents were in the middle of preparing to leave. They had a few oxen with them to drive carts of food, the residents themselves marching out with round packs on their backs. They looked small and weak, and among them even smaller children who were made to walk by the beasts. Rather than letting them all go, the scouts decided to ambush the fleeing residents, striking when they were closest to the center of the column. Panic set in and the natives dropped their packs and picked up their children, these small folk were easily snatched up to be carried off. The scouts thought the oxen would simply flee, but instead, they charged at the scouts, despite being burdened with carts. A scout died after being trampled, and his companions took vengeance on the beast, slaying it in front of its owners. Children cried after witnessing such brutality, their endless screaming made a scout lose his temper and assault the child, giving him a concussion. When the scouting party returned, its captain recommended the offending scout 20 lashes. They acquired 9 prisoners, 4 elderly, 2 adults, and 3 children, one of whom was unconcious. Out of fear, they revealed the location of many villages, but most importantly a route to the Capital.
>Cohorts were sent to slash and burn the woods around them, clearing space to finally get their troops off the dam. Troops were unloaded by the Abandoned Winery and the Cliff Bottom Village, good forward sights to start their advance. After cutting down a line of flora, the captain in charge finally gave the order to begin burning their work at dawn, so that their enemies could see their burning home throughout the night. While this was happening, other cohorts were burning down the land closer to the dam; officers taking the initiative to clear land to own after rescuing the Emperor.
>Carthallo's walls were in a terrible state, but it was savable. The commander in charge felt it was better to downsize the size of Carthallo rather than restore its entire perimeters. He began by restoring the front gates and utilizing buildings to at least secure a camp. Many of the refugees felt encouraged to begin sewing their roots in the outskirts, which were once declared forbidden by the Frozen Emperor of the past. Though they will not immediately provide revenue, they're a worthy investment.

Kindled Alliance
>The Stairway City was now free, and an experimental council was formed to govern it, made up of the greatest contributors to the coup. Imperial pretenders used to be a dime a dozen, that was until the Purge of Princes when many cadets were trimmed from the dynasty. There were still plenty of possible heirs, anybody with structurally blue hair and iridescent eyes was assumed to be a descendant of a past Emperor. Though none existed in the Stairway City at the moment. The Free City was fortified, making it clear that the Captain-General was seeking a longer and more cautious campaign than a short and shocking one.
>Meanwhile, the North began to consolidate into stronger Hearthdoms, obscure clans becoming prominent and supplanting the legacy of the ancient clans from before. The Captain-General began hearing news from the Mammoth Basin, many of those legacy clans were threatening revolt against the lethargic leadership of the Over-King.
The Mammoth Basin survived by staying isolated, and its native leadership wishes to maintain this order. The refugee clans from the old Hearthdoms, such as the Vulcans, Bridge, and Ruined but Proud feel ignored and demand a Great Host be raised to dominate the North. It is likely that if the Refugee Clans win the civil war, they will begin conquering the rest of the north, and the newer Hearthdoms will fight back. You have many options to take, such as supporting the Old Mammoth Clans, the Refugee Clans, the New Hearthdoms, or focusing on the South instead, or whatever else you can think of.

"Approved, Captain."

>Send a diplomatic party to the Capital via boat under a flag of truce with the prisoners, we seek parlay with the local leadership.

>Continue the clearance of the Swamp, halting on the edge of the capital

>Build a bridge across this side of the swamp so both flanks can reinforce each other more easily

*For Cathallo, the Captain's current plan is also approved, also suggesting that a point of Supply be provided to the refugees to get them on their feet faster.

Dog has fought bandits, and wild animals, but he never fought bandits and wild animals at the same time. He has forgotten that he was protecting not just any child but the Heavenly Emperor, this display of power has reminded him of this fact. Dog will now show as much respect as he can when talking to the boy, as well as to Fina. He did not harbor any ill-will towards her for running away or for her outburst, he had faced worse reactions. If anything he wants to comfort them both and will do anything they ask if it would make them happy.

He also remembers that since he's going to be travelling with them he would like to know more about them, he has told his story now he wants to know theirs. He especially wants to know more of his Lord's powers, that way they may both be better prepared in the future. He is ready to give his life, but he does not want to lose it in friendly fire. He also does not want the emperor to be overwhelmed again either. The child will need to focus on skill rather than strength if he wants to survive a fight, perhaps he could use his magics in tandem with melee?

Also, I'd appreciate it if you didn't write how the characters we made and play as feel. After all, I think the person who'd know best how a character would react to something is the person who made them.

>while northerners are superior in every way to the southerner, our lack of unity is our one great weakness has been our dissunity, adn we are quick to fight against each other.
i ask the smuggler if she can send a series of messages to the various legacy and new clans, that we must stand united, and we could create marriage pacts between both old an new to create a unified front against the south and the sunkeepers. with such marriages, the old can go back to their homeland, and the new can win the legitimacy of the old. also, the over-king can is an impeditment. traditions are important, but they can also be a shackle, be done with him and after the war, we can choose a new one in a peaceful manner, as brothers and sisters of the hearth.
>after that, the promethean prepare his host to march, to go meet the republicans. after all, we might have a few common grounds between the two of us. i'll leave a single cohort to protect the old promethean fortress.

I'm sorry if it came across that way, but I was trying to illustrate how the situation of swarming condors isn't something normal nor natural (or believed to be), and wasn't ever to be expected. Since updates occur on a weekly basis, I try to expedite the story by going through beats, but do not hesitate to let me know how you want your character to feel instead, that should take precedence as long as we end the story beat just the same.

Courier anon seems to know more about Lings, perhaps his character could try to explain the Lings' relationship with animals.

Morning gents, I regret to say that I have lost the drive to continue this quest. It was more complicate than I needed it to be (despite its simplicity), but it was too difficult for me to keep this going while I was doing other projects. For those who have been with me before /qst/ such as the Between Two Skies threads from /tg/, I still have the Lingdom thread I'm running, which I actually have fun doing.

>>5939898

I've actually been working on building a website to store my worldbuilding autism, so you might see that shilled on /tg/ some time in the future.

Here is a cute idol-hime as an apology.

Courier anon here, sorry that you've been burned out and for replying so late. As much as it would be fun to continue this quest, your enjoyment and well being come first. This shouldn't feel like a second job. I've also been following the other quest and enjoy it as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if other anons here have been doing so. Thanks QM!
