You are Kara Zor-El, one of the last living remnants of the once proud Kryptonian Empire. When you were but a babe, the empire fell. You were taken in by another of its remnants: The artificial intelligence known as Brainiac. It nurtured you when you were little, taught you lessons of your Kryptonian heritage, trained you to fight as they did. Direct and unforgiving.

As you grew up, Brainiac reestablished the Empire. He started out only with a few derelict space stations and ships and soon grew to encompass a few systems, bringing under heel various civilizations who owed their growth to Krypton. They were rebels, traitors, they refused Brainiac’s mercy and Brainiac taught them to respect their betters.

You watched it often, orbit bombings. Wars fought between Kryptonian war machines and whatever these species could muster. Whole species punished to toil to pay back for their crimes. Your heart hardened, the Empire was in dire straits, terrible things had to be done for a brighter future.

Soon enough, you were convinced. Krypton had to return. The resources and skills of the civilizations that once bent the knee to the homeworld had to be united to continue its purpose. To expand, to enlighten.

And you reached adulthood. 21 years of age in Kryptonian society. Brainiac outfitted you with an armour made of the best composites from the New Empire, and the most up to date technological advancements the AI could muster.

“Zor-El.” His robotic voice rang from the comms console below you. “My most precious asset, how I longed for you to feel the pride that stems from fighting for the Great Cause.”

“Thank you, Brainiac.” You replied. “I have anxiously waited for this day myself.”

“It is good to hear. Allow me to remind you of your mission: You will be dropped into the government building of the Kazarrian Empire, the foremost polity on planet Racker V after the Empire’s collapse.”

You watched the planet below you as the ship approached the landing zone. A grand urban sprawl appeared below. Brainiac went silent for a moment as the dropship’s shields were taking fire from ground-based orbital lasers. The ship shook for a moment, but soon stabilized under the heavy fire.

“Worry not, Zor-El. Their technological level cannot match ours. Our shields will hold.”

“Yes, Brainiac.” You replied.

“As I was saying, with the taking of the Kazarrian Emperor, Racker V’s united front will collapse. They will understand there is no point in their defiance. Whatever pockets of resistance will remain will be dealt with accordingly. I expect this new strategy I have devised with you as its spearhead to reduce the damages caused by planetary reclamation by…” The console goes silent for a moment. “One hundred a thirty thousand, five hundred and thirteen point five eight zero…” Brainiac drones on with the decimals.

“Brainiac.” You cut it off.

“Zero three percent.” Brainiac says. “I have rounded off the last decimal for your cognitive system’s convenience.”

You sigh. Fire engulfs the ship as it breaks into the atmosphere. Now the laser barrage is accompanied by flurries of missiles which explode into balls of death around your ship, still well protected by its shields. Ballistic anti-air fire also flies through the air. Low thumps can be heard as the bullets ricochet.

“Zor-El. I do not expect their weapons to have any effect on your armor, or even your body, for that matter. Your task should be simple.”

“Right-“ Your acknowledgement is cut off by a sudden shake of the ship. It seems to go off trajectory. “Brainiac?” You yell.

“Interference-“ The console’s voice cuts off into a buzz. “Electromagnetic pulse-“ It stammers out. “Unknown- technology-“

You look outside the ship and witness wide-eyed as its shields fail and now the barrages of lasers, missiles and bullets begin to slowly eat away the ship’s armor and hull. The city below you is still too far, but you are safely in the planet’s atmosphere.

You slam the emergency door opening mechanism as the ship cracks and breaks around you. The door opens a little and its mechanisms fail. You dart back into the ship’s bowels before flying forward with all your strength and tearing right through it. You hover in the sky as you watch your ship finally sunder and explode. The air here is too thin for your liking, so you engage your suit’s helmet and activate oxygen reserves before darting down towards your objective.

You hear the sound barrier being broken around you. Atmospheric fighters scramble towards your position. You try to communicate with Brainiac, but it cannot respond.

>Ignore them. Your objective is the palace.

You prepare your helmet’s built-in eye laser amplifier to take down the first two fighters headed your way. If the simulations are anything to go by, they should go down easily with a well-aimed shot.

But the simulations aren’t anything to go by. The amplifier malfunctions, likely due to the EMP that took out communications with Brainiac, you get to think before your laser blows right up in your face.

When you regain consciousness, you can’t see and your head is hurting really bad. You realize you were knocked out for a few seconds while in the air. You’re freefalling, your touch your head and realize your helmet’s torn apart. You can hear the fighters coming up from above, straight towards you.

You regain your footing in the air and look up. You’d fire your eye lasers, but nothing’s coming out. Oh no.

Panic is coursing through you. You’re feeling a cold sweat all over and can’t focus right. You try to remember the simulations, no visibility conditions. Trust your other senses. Hearing first.

First, defence, your suit’s shield. You press a button on your right arm. “Irridium core compromised, unable to raise shield.” The suit’s automated voice response system says.

Shit. You hear flurries of high caliber ammunition ripping through the air, a near miss. Yet something feels… off about them.

One of the fighters seems to swerve after delivering its first salvo. You pursue but the noise is deafening, it’s almost impossible to pinpoint its position. Much less so now that other fighters are clearly joining in the fight.

Another salvo cuts through the air and this time it hits you. The armor blocks the bullets though their sheer force pushes you back a ways, you start flying away from the sound of the fighters and touch the parts that were hit to check the extent of the damage. You can touch something in the impact areas, it’s as though the bullets gripped on your armor through some sort of mechanism. You start feeling nauseated, it’s a familiar feeling, one you had to fight against in the training rooms for hours on end. It’s kryptonite.

Your head’s still thumping from amplifier’s explosion, your body aches from the impact of the bullets and the kryptonite is crushing you under its oppressive presence. You keep flying away but soon hear the distinctive sound of a missile traversing the air. It hits you and you lose consciousness again.

You feel lost, as though in a dream. You remember a man’s face holding your little hand when you were a baby. Zor’El, your father, whose name you proudly inherited. “Everything will be alright, little one.” He says as he lays you on a pod. “We will always be proud of you, no matter what.” The pod’s door closes, and you’re submerged in a profound sleep.
>>
>>6129917
You feel water being thrown at you and wake up. You can see… though only from one eye as you quickly surmise. Your armor’s gone, replaced with some sort of prisoner’s wear, all black with the symbol of the Kazarrian Empire, a hexagon with four angular wings sprouting from its top side. You try to move, but your extremities are buried into strong alloys laced with green kryptonite. You start shouting as you try to break through your restraints, but it’s useless.

A thick window separates you from your captor. You recognize the emperor of Kazar, Orneus, second of his name. He’s the exact same young, well-built, blue humanoid with antennae you saw in the briefing. A purebred member of the old Kazarrian warrior caste.

“You woke up. Good. My doctors told me you were in a coma, but it seems it was a short one after all. Either that, or we don’t know as much about Kryptonian physiology as we thought.”

You glare at the man and he responds with a mocking smile. “Now now, young girl. No need to look at me like that. I wish I could provide you with better accommodations but we learned not to trust Kryptonians long, long ago.”

He paces around the room beyond the glass. “I must thank you, though. Most of my councilors insisted that Kryptonians had gone extinct twenty years ago. They called me a fool, thought I was paranoid, insane. But you…” He faces you and touches the glass with his hand. “You confirmed all the fears that my people doubted. You gave reason to decades of research and billion credit investments dedicated solely to incorporating our newly found Kryptonite deposits into our weapon systems.”

He clenches his other hand into a fist. “And now that my people’s fears are renewed, my rule will be unquestioned.” He chuckles. “And since you are likely one of the last vestiges of the Kryptonian species… Your fleet in orbit has called off any attacks fearing retaliation. Good thinking on their part as, if they even make an inkling of a move, I’ll order kryptonite to be shoved down your throat.”

His maniacal laugh echoes in the room. “Heavens, my position has not been as secure as it is today in all my tenure as emperor. And I have you to thank for that.”
>>
>>6129918
It seems he is done with his monologue. You think, think of all the simulations you were in. If you are ever taken prisoner, you are to remain silent about the Empire, protect your own life at any cost and await rescue. Then you think of your briefing. The Kazarrian Empire… Although it is the strongest polity on this planet, the rest of the countries on Racker V are bound together in a coalition against it. Neither side can make a move, fearing that a spark could bring annihilation to the world.

As for the emperor. He is as paranoid as others think he is. Paranoid enough that his plans with kryptonite-laced weaponry and anti-Kryptonian EMP technology were not detected by Brainiac’s agents. But to develop this kind of tech in ten years of rule, and dealing with the political intrigue that is inherent to Kazarr… He has to be a genius, and proud of it too.

What do you do or say?
>”You and I could come to an agreement, emperor. I could serve you, make sure that the Kazarrian Empire rules over all of Racker V. Imagine that, your entire world would bow to you.”

Surrender, emperor Orneus, and perhaps you will be made governor of this planet.”

is the kryptonite thing due to our bad luck or something you had planned ?
>>
>>6129921
Planned actually, though >>6129894 was super sharp in his guessing game and ruined any credibility my claim might've had lol. It was supposed to be the reveal during the battle and the one reason you'd be rolling any somewhat hard dice against these guys.

Still, I'm glad we started with a critfail in the tutorial session chapter. It will spice things up.
>>
>>6129826
Bit divided. Bluffing on his paranoia of Kryptonians could pay well if we manage to pull it off. If we fail tho I'm not really looking forward to Kryptonite injection or whatever torture the guy has in store. That would suck.

On the other hand I'm also a bit iffy on conquering the planet for him. I suppose we were planning on doing it ourself anyways, even if the methodology was different. And it buys time, even if he makes us wear a bomb collar. Not sure how to vote yet, but we should take note that the other countries all hate the guy. If we can give them his head, they might even thank us for it.

>”You will pay for this, emperor Orneus. And soon.”
Kryptonians need not grovel or bluff. We'll prove his fears well-founded when we crush his layrnx-equivalent into pulp with our bare hand.
>>
>>6130068
It's simple, just get him to test the Kryptonian gag reflex and give him a botched circumcision. A foolproof plan. Though how that gets us out of the cell I have no idea. But he'll not be having fun anymore and that's a W to me.

But with a good amount of option 1 added in.
Give him the classic carrot or stick choice - the inevitability that is our people's conquest of his world, and the agonising death that awaits him if we are killed in the process, or the unquestioned rule over an entire planet if he takes advantage of the opportunity that has fallen within his reach.

It's a close race so I'll try to weave it into a mix. Kara will keep the part about paying for it to herself though.

You look at the emperor and smile. It seems to catch his attention, as you’d expect.

“Something funny about your situation, Kryptonian?” He asks.

“I think you’re missing the bigger picture, Emperor Orneus. Our people will conquer this world, it doesn’t matter if I live or die. If I do die, you will pay for your actions tenfold.”

He chuckles. “Well, I’m not sure about the inevitability of your conquest. How many Kryptonians remain? Ten, twenty, a hundred? I can deal with that.”

“You think we sat idly for twenty years? Whatever you can throw at us, we are more than prepared for.” You shrug as best as you can considering you can barely move your shoulders. “We simply did not expect this level of resistance, that’s all. Now that we know, I can assure you that our fleets are scrambling to deal with the unequivocal threat that you pose to our continued existence.”

He raises an eyebrow.

“You are not prepared. You may have mobilized the resources of half your planet for ten years to deal with us, but you are still not prepared for what is to come, emperor.”

“You are not making a good case to keep you alive, my dear. If this payback is going to be so great no matter what, if your people will glass Kazarr Prime out of existence, why keep you alive?”

He grabs a scalpel from a table beside him and presses a button on the wall. The glass slowly slides and enters your room, you recognize strands of kryptonite on the blade. He presses it against your cheek and your skin breaks. The dizziness you feel turns into that familiar nausea, you almost want to puke. “Perhaps I should just end your life here and now, just to get the satisfaction of killing one of your kind before it all ends.”

You huff and puff between words, forming coherent words while the kryptonite is so close to you is almost impossible. “Because it’s not too late for you, not yet.” You stammer out.

“Oh?” He moves the scalpel away and steps back. “And what do you mean by that?”

“You’re a smart man, emperor Orneus. You predicted we would return in time. You prepared your world for it. Intelligence like that is well rewarded by the Kryptonian Empire.” You say as you recover from the kryptonite’s influence.

He does not hide his interest in what you’re saying. “Continue.”

“But you know what they would reward even better? The whole planet, unified under one polity. And of course, seeing me cooperating with you in that process.”

He seems to ponder what you’re saying.

“How about it? Free me and this world is yours.” You say.

He stands there for a moment, eyeing you up and down. “You have a deal.” Orneus says. He leaves the room. After a few minutes where you struggle to see if you can actually get out of your bonds, he comes back in with a collar. “Though, as the elite of a fellow empire, you must understand if I take some precautions before letting you go.” He heads behind you and clasps the collar on your neck. “This is an explosive device with pure kryptonite inside. You are shielded from its radiation, but if the device goes off, you’ll be killed by the kryptonite shrapnel that lodges itself into your head.”

He clicks a button which tightens the collar’s grasp, you hear an elongated, high-pitched noise which seems to imply its activation. Orneus returns to his usual spot, right in front of you. “There are two ways for it to go off, remotely or if my heartbeat ceases.” He smirks. “I know Kryptonians are quite fast. I wouldn’t have time to press the button if you decided to just smash me against the wall. But if you do that, you die.”

You have a hard time hiding the hate that’s simmering in you, you force a smile through. “You’re a smart man, Orneus.” He presses another button in the control panel outside your prison cell. The alloys open up and you’re free to move. You move your arms first, then take a few steps. You almost trip and fall, but Orneus takes you by the arm before you hit the ground and redresses you. You look at him, surprised at the sudden show of generosity.

“You’re tired, my dear. I will order my men to take you to a room and rest there. Tomorrow we will speak of the first steps in our bargain.” He starts walking out of the room, but stops halfway there and looks back at you. “Do not try to escape, I will consider that treason.”

He opens the door and sends in two guards to take you to your lodgings. The guards are wearing high tech armor and seem to be using ballistic weaponry. You’d think that would be a little backwards for the Emperor’s palace guard, but the bullets are likely laced with kryptonite. As you walk down the halls, you realize that you’re in some sort of bunker. Cell doors similar to yours line up both sides of the hallways. Considering how silent everything is, they seem to be soundproofed.

You’re taken to an elevator which heads up. When you arrive at your destined floor, you realize the doors here are much wider apart. They open one of them, your new holding cell looks more like an apartment. One of the guards shoves you in.

The anger you’ve been feeling since you woke up is about to make you strike back.

“I will not allow you to treat me this way!” You yell and turn around to face him.

“Pipe down, you cursed animal.” The guard says as he shoves you into the door frame again.

You know you shouldn’t do this. You know it very well, but you can’t help it, you slam your shoulder against the guy and fly right into the wall behind him, strong enough to leave a mark on it. You grab him by the collar. “Cursed animal?!” You yell. “I am not an animal-“

You feel the shock of an electric baton on your left. It doesn’t affect you much, but it surprises you just enough to step away from the other guard. “Drop him!” He says as he aims his gun at you. “Drop him now, or you’re dead!”

“I’m going to teach you both respect.” You put the guard you just slammed between you and the other guard, yet suddenly you feel the kryptonite’s presence again. Like a wave of poison coming straight from your collar.

“Now now.” The emperor’s voice rings from the collar. “That’s quite enough from all of you.” Your eyes dart down shocked and you grab at the collar, but soon your knees give way and you fall, letting go of the unconscious guard. “This Kryptonian is our guest, treat her such. And take Feris to medical. You will both see me when he regains consciousness to discuss this altercation at length.

The other guard responds while slowly lowering his weapon. “Yes, sir.” He grabs you by the hand and drags you into your room, leaving you on the floor. The door closes down behind you.

The compartment of the kryptonite is still open on your collar. You feel it up to take a guess at its shape, it’s like a ring of solid kryptonite, your hand burns just from touching it. But, for a moment, you think you could actually pull on the thing and rip it off.

“I’m sorry about my guards.” Orneus’ voice comes out of the collar again. “I’m afraid I had to reinforce the deep-seated hatred of your species present in Kazarria. Had I known we could… cooperate. I would not have insisted so much on that policy.”

You think, for a moment, that you could actually tear off the kryptonite collar and make an escape, here and now. But every time you touch the kryptonite your hand burns. There’s already marks just from checking the shape of it. Maybe you should just play along for now, avoid losing Orneus’ trust.

But you’re not an attack dog for some inferior Rackerian weakling. You’re a warrior of the New Empire!

“Would you mind giving me some privacy? I’m not going to leave.” You say out loud hoping the collar would pick it up.

“If you were to leave, I would know.” The threat hangs on the air for a moment. “But… I have other things to tend to for now anyhow.”

Finally, silence. You let out a long sigh. You notice a library stand by a cushioned chair near your bed. There’s all kinds of books there. History, geography, some religious books. You pick one out from the bunch. “The Times of Subjugation”. A book written on Krypton’s occupation of the planet.

According to Brainiac’s registries, this planet was taken over while the population was stuck in the steel age. Petty monarchs fought one another over slivers of lands and familial disputes. Krypton ended it all and installed a Kryptonian governor to oversee the enlightenment of this species. The Empire’s rule lasted around a century, in that time, great cities and industrial districts were formed, the population and economy boomed to unprecedented levels. The natives lived better, longer and more comfortable lives. In exchange, the planet gave its tithes.

You start passing some pages of the natives’ book. It goes into great detail about the pre-existing Rackerian civilization. You’re surprised to read that, at least according to them, they were already a well established industrial society. Breakthroughs in medicine, production methods allowed them to grow on their own, and they had almost established a democratic world government when the Kryptonians came.

And when they came, they obliterated the governments who resisted them. Established labor camps for those who dared question their rule. Forcibly moved entire populations around the world to be used as the workforce of megalithic construction projects. As generations passed, the empire’s chokehold did not relent, it grew worse. The tithes grew in size, the Rackerians and even Racker itself could barely take on the price required. Until finally, one day, the Empire was no more. The Rackerians collapsed into warring states with the Kazarrian Empire coming out on top.

That was not the Empire you knew. The Empire came to enlighten, to bring knowledge and make their lives better. No more deaths due to famine, petty diseases or war.
>>
>>6130581
Somewhat startled by the level of detail of the lies the book tried to propagate. You close it. You feel your heart beat faster. But what if… What if it was true? Maybe this planet was a one-off. They initially rebelled, clearly, so they deserved punishment. The Empire did go through some economic woes in its last years.

But even if all of that were so, did the Rackerians truly deserve such treatment even generations after the Empire first landed? Did the initial struggle really require such a harsh response?

And why would Brainiac’s historical archives lie about this?

You shake your head. No. The lies were in the book, not in the archives. When you returned home you would search through the archives, dive deep into them and seek the truth. There will be proof there, you know it.

But for now, your eyelids grow heavy. Your whole body suffered from the kryptonite exposure and the day’s battle and it required rest.

You soon found blissful sleep, remembering your father’s face.

The next day, you’re treated to a typical Kazarrian breakfast by a person who looks like a cook. There’s lots to choose from, sweet and salty. There’s the simple but stout Kazarrian black bread, tiny fried eggs from some sort of avian species, Leevanian citric cake and a peculiarly grey milk from a Barlonian mammal.

You’re not used to so many excesses. Brainiac always kept you on an efficient diet, dour as it was with all the tube pastes and dehydrated food. The cake is especially delicious considering the low sucrose intake of your usual meals.

You’re also provided what seems like a proper Kazarrian uniform. A tight-fitted black undershirt with an also black jacket with golden epaulettes and the insignia of the empire on the left of its zipper, the pants are also completely black and featureless save for the golden lining down at the leg opening. You’re also provided with military boots and an also golden military belt, though you don’t think it will see much use.

The morning passes as you read some sort of primer on the ‘glory’ of the Kazarrian Empire. There’s an initial part about the rule of the first Kazarrian Emperor, Orneus I, somewhat short when compared to Orneus II. Apparently Orneus I was the current emperor’s father. He united the planetary section of Kazarria, which was de facto and de jure capital section of Racker V during the Kryptonian era. The centralized infrastructure was used by Orneus I to great effect to expand his domain. He bravely died in the Leevanian front ten years into his rule, after which Orneus II took over the emperorship and the current borders were settled.

There is a portrait of Orneus in the last page of his rule. Much of the same facial features as his son, but also bearing a stylized beard and much more potent physique, it seems he went everywhere with an official hat.

You hear a ring coming from the door. You expect the door to open on its own, but it doesn’t, and you hear someone clear their throat to attract your attention.

“Come in.” You say. You never said that, now that you think about it. Brainiac didn’t really need permission, it knew when it could ‘come in’, that is pop in your personal quarters’ console, or not.

The door opens and the Emperor is there accompanied by a young female with long black hair and eyes of an alloy as strong as the Emperor’s. She keeps a straight military posture, her hands behind her back.

“Good morning, my dear.” The Emperor says as he walks into the room. “Everything was to your liking I hope?” He eyes the library for a moment and you notice a hint of a smile appearing on his lips.

Sure, everything except the kryptonite collar that could blow at any moment.

>”Yes. I now feel like a proper guest. Thank you, Emperor Orneus.”
>”Cut the charade, emperor, and get straight to the point.”

“Oh yes, I feel like a proper guest, I loved the cake. Thank you, Emperor Orneus.”

There is a silence that hangs on the air. The emperor is looking at you weird, as is his companion. You shake your head a bit. “I mean uh- Cut the charade, emperor, and get straight to the point.”

The emperor chuckles and shrugs. The woman who accompanies him stands between you. “You will show proper respect to the Emperor of Kazarria.” Her tone is a clear threat, her steely gaze turned to ice from cold fury. You notice she’s wearing a uniform much similar to yours, but her epaulettes are of a much higher rank.

The Emperor puts a hand on her shoulder. “Be calm, Laria.” He says, and the woman obeys, taking a step back. “Donderrian cake is a palace favourite, after all.” He says with an almost humorous tone.

Laria grinds her teeth as she continues to glare at you, but the emperor takes up your attention.

“Considering our current joint accord, I have devised a plan of action for the next few days, or perhaps weeks.” The emperor says. He takes out a semisphere which opens up into a hologram of Racker V, its landmasses split into the different polities that controls it.

He hovers his finger over one of the polities and it zooms on to that area. “This is the Republic of Leevania. My father died there, ten years ago. Perhaps you’ve read about it?” He looks over towards you from the side of his eye.

You don’t reply.

“No matter. It is the country that leads the anti-Kazarrian alliance, the so-called League of Emancipated Nations, or LEN, for short.” He says. He focuses further towards the border between Kazarria and Leevania.

“There is a great mountain range that separates the peninsula which Leevania controls from the rest of the continent. Leevania has strong naval and air assets, and it compensates its smaller land army by keeping strong fortifications between us.” He moves the hologram towards a point in the Leevanian peninsula.

“This is Leevania Prime, the capital of the republic.”

“Kazarria Prime and Leevania Prime? Really?” You say.

The Emperor shrugs again. “Krypton named them, ask your historical archives.” He then turns his attention to the city again. “Much like Kazarria Prime, there is a government building in its center, from which the rest of the city’s infrastructure flows in multiple rings. It is relatively low for such a prestigious edifice, mostly because it has various bunker levels beneath the ground.” The Emperor deploys a holographic keyboard and pulls up the building’s schematics. “This is what we have archived from 20 years ago. According to our agents there, the building hasn’t changed save for a few renovations and closed off floors.”

He then zooms towards the lowest floor of the building. “The president’s office is here.”

You nod. “So, go in and eliminate the president?”
>>
>>6131461

Orneus smiles. “Eliminate? That is one word for it.” He looks you straight in the eye. You’ve never thought about what killing feels like. Brainiac never made you kill, only watch killing. You’ve never liked it, even if it was for the good of the Empire. But it’s all means to an end. Orneus continues, “There is no need to kill the president per se, capturing him would be worthwhile as it would cause further political chaos. I have agents there who could rile up the Leevanian parliament, the argument that the president is still alive would be the best solution to avoid…” He stops. “But don’t let me bore you with the details.” He finishes.

He presents the girl beside him. “This is Laria Orneusa, my daughter.” You’re surprised to hear that. Well, maybe not so much, Kryptonian novels usually had generals and politicians bringing their children about with them. Brainiac would probably ponder just how far the planetary culture was influenced by the Kryptonians right now, but you don’t.

“She has been expertly trained for special operations and has participated in multiple infiltration missions in Leevania Prime. She will go with you to aid you in your task.”

You look at them perplexed. “The Emperor’s daughter as a secret agent? Wouldn’t she be too recognizable?”

Laria presses a seemingly invisible button on her undershirt and her appearance changes to that of a middle-aged male. The Emperor smiles at the display. “Her equipment is top of the line. Nothing the Leevanians have could see through that.”

You chuckle. “Come on, this is just a simulation.” You grab at her arm to distort whatever 3D display is in use here, but you actually touch the cloth that should be holographic.

She violently shrugs you off. “Don’t touch me.” She growls with a man’s deep voice.

“Now now, my dears.” The Emperor says. “Please excuse her, she is not used to aliens.”

Laria returns to her usual appearance by pressing the same switch. “Much less so to Kryptonians.” Her tone is venom, you make sure to glare at her.

“Fine. How is the mission going to go?”

“Well, as you know, no plan survives its execution.” The Emperor heads out of the room and beckons you both to follow. “You will work in unison. There are two ways to approach this. Plan A would be for you, my dear, to cause a distraction on palace grounds so Laria can head into the president’s office and assassinate him.” You check Laria’s reaction, she has a good space poker face. You continue walking through the hallways, but not towards the elevator you took to come up here. “Plan B is to have Laria cause the distraction, and for you to eliminate the president.”
>>
>>6131463
“What kind of distraction will Laria cause?” You ask.

“A good one, I assure you.” Orneus does not seem intent on getting into the details. “I will leave it to you both to see which plan you will follow. If anything goes awry, the prime objective is to apprehend or kill the president.”

“And if your daughter is in danger?”

“That is the risk a member of the Orneus family takes when they pledge their lives to the Empire.” He dryly replies. Drier than usual. Laria does not react.

“I see.” You say. It really is similar to the Kryptonian Empire.

You arrive at another elevator and head up, the back of the elevator opens, even though it seemed like a regular elevator wall. You arrive at some sort of hangar, where an airship awaits. It’s the size of a heavy fighter, long and sleek.

“This fighter bears a cloaking device. Its hover system should allow you to land safely at the designated coordinates. It is your only method of escape.”

You nod.

Orneus then orders Laria to prepare the fighter for your expedition, then turns towards you. “Before I let you go. I would like to formally greet you. It is customary when sending a fellow to a life or death mission.”

You cross your arms. “Right, that’s nice.”

He nods. “I am Emperor Orneus Orneuso of Kazarria, second of his name. Of the Orneusid family.”

I think there's an argument to be made for both being the distraction and being the one who goes for the president. Kryptonian false flag.
We get a disguise setup so we look like a different Kryptonian attacking the world, seemingly uncaring of the differences between their nations. The disguised us then go towards the nation that captured the real us, where we stage a battle that downs the disguised us, perhaps at our own hands.
The Krypton threat is shown as real and not propaganda, and Kazarria simultaneously looks like it is not just able to fight Kryptonians but turn them after revealing the truth of the old occupation.

“And I am Kara Zor’El, of Krypton.” You reply.

“It’s good to make your acquaintance, Kara Zor’El.” He looks back at the plane. “I’d wish you good luck, but luck is worthless.” And with that grim statement, he turns around and leaves.

You head to the plane, Laria seems to be doing some routine checks before departure. She doesn’t speak a word to you.

You put a shoulder to the ship’s hull and look at her. “We’re supposed to choose a plan.” You say.

“I will kill the president. That is my honor.” She replies, dry as her father.

“So what’s the plan? I barge in and beat up some guards while you sneak in and kill the president?”

“Whatever distraction you think is best.” She says. “You have your job and I have mine.”

“How about giving me one of those cloaking devices like the one you have? We could use it to infiltrate together, get as far as we can before causing trouble.”

“We can’t, there isn’t one available for you.”

“I’m sure someone can give me theirs.”

“No, it doesn’t work like that.”

“So how does it work?”

“Listen.” She says, exhasperated. “Whatever we could provide for this mission, we provided. Leevanian bureaucrats do not have uniforms, but they do use formal wear, you’ll also get a set of that.” The plane’s ramp opens up and touches the ground.

You head inside along with her. She picks up some clothes and hands them over to you. “Here.” It’s a beige jacket with a white buttoned shirt, beige suit pants and black heeled shoes.

You pick them up. “You could’ve given me these clothes to start with.”

“The Kazarrian uniform is an object of pride.” She says. “But you wouldn’t get it.” She heads to the cockpit and takes the pilot’s seat.

You take a look at the uniform. You wonder if there could be a better plan than this.

>Whatever she says. Disguises, infiltration and distraction is a good enough plan. Let's go ahead with that.
>It could be more discreet if you dealt with the president, quickly and efficiently. She can plan out her own distraction.

>We get a disguise setup so we look like a different Kryptonian attacking the world, seemingly uncaring of the differences between their nations.
>The disguised us then go towards the nation that captured the real us, where we stage a battle that downs the disguised us, perhaps at our own hands.

Just so I'm sure, we disguise ourselves as a Kryptonian, we attack Leevania Prime to cause a distraction and show how weak and defenceless they are, then we head for Kazarria Prime to pretend to be downed by them. Is that good?
>>
>>6131683
I think it's a really goofy idea myself, but I'll fuck around with it so we all find out kek
>>
>>6131608
>Whatever she says. Disguises, infiltration and distraction is a good enough plan. Let's go ahead with that.
>>
If she's insistent on killing the President herself, we can compromise on that point by letting her do the deed, and let the Emperor know that truth. But for the Public? We just go into that office after making the distraction to let her kill him and make it look like the Kryptonian Empire killed him. She can get the black op credit.

Fun addendum abot this plan (if it goes well enough) is it may cause Braniac to freak out in addition to the rest of the planet. Sure he might see through Kara allying with this planet's empire...but far as he'd know, random Kryptonian he doesn't know about claiming to be from a Kryptonian Empire he doesn't know about just showed up. He'll run himself ragged trying to find that ghost empire.

MAWS Kryptonians are seemingly at a lower power level, akin to early season Justice Leaue animated Supes than latter-season or comic. You may be overestimating us.
>>
Regarding our speed, we are quite fast but not lightning fast. I don't want to go too in depth on calculating distances and speeds as it could be retconned at anytime for the story's sake.

Even in Justice League AU Superman's power level comes and goes because otherwise you wouldn't need any heroes other than him. I'd like to have a middle ground approach for the quest as they do require more precise limits to player powers than a non-interactive story, but I'm not quite so sure on where to draw the line.

For now the line is drawn at: You can't fly into space and away from the signal without being noticed.

No, no. We are the ones who down a fake Kryptonian, and the look of that fake Kryptonian is what we're disguised as when we're attacking Leevania Prime. We'd be aiming to get a rep as a hero fighting against Krypton that was turned by Kaserria after the Truth of Krypton was revealed, not the ultimate big bad.
>>
You were going to start changing, but an idea crept up in your mind. “How about a false flag attack from me?”

Laria finishes checking one of the controls and looks at you.

“I go in on Leevania Prime with Kryptonian armor, I’m sure you have my stuff around here somewhere. We make sure the president is captured or killed, that is, you make sure. Then I could even attack Kazarria Prime again and pretend to be downed. You confirm that the Kryptonian threat is real to the whole world and claim your country brought it down.”

Laria takes a hand to her chin as she thinks. “Good idea, yes.” Then she returns to the controls. “But let’s not rush too far ahead. First things first, you attack Leevania Prime with Kryptonian armor, whether attacking Kazarria Prime is necessary or not, that will be for my father to dilucidate. He will tell you through comms.” As she says that, she hands you an earpiece. “It’s highly resistant.”

She then calls her father to explain your idea. Their conversation seems stern and quick. Eventually, a soldier brings you your armor. It’s not in the best of shapes, the helmet is almost completely torn, but they do bring you a black and red full helmet to hide your face. You almost feel like yourself again.

The plane then departs. According to Laria, it will take around 3 hours to reach destination. She sets up the autopilot soon after reaching maximum altitude.

You sit on the copilot’s seat. Tugging at the collar around your neck. Now that you have some downtime, you can really feel the itch.

Laria looks at your collar, then to you. “Were you going to kill my father?”

“Huh?” You’re confused. Right, that was the plan just yesterday.

“Were you?” She insists.

>It was never in your plans. ”No, I wasn’t. Krypton enlightens and uplifts, it does not oppress without absolute need.”
>You were going to do as Brainiac told you. ”I guess it’s similar to what we’re about to do. The Emperor is worth more alive than dead.”

I doubt we can convince her of Krypton's goodwill after the heavy handed propaganda her father enacted to demonize all Kryptonians.
Though if the other option wins and she goes to question our personal stance to spare her father we can always say we didn't come to this planet with a bomb collar.

There was no intent to kill, but Brainiac's words still ring in your mind.
>>
“No, I wasn’t. Krypton enlightens and uplifts, it does not oppress without absolute need.” She looks straight at you for a moment.

“So, no qualms about possibly killing the president of Leevania, but you did have qualms about killing my father?”

You point at the collar on your neck.

Her eyes open up for a moment as she realizes. “Uh… right.” Silence. “What you say about Krypton enlightening and uplifting. I think it’s a lie.”

“You would. Your father’s propaganda seems to be quite effective.” You reply.

“No, sure, the propaganda embellishes and heightens for the masses. But I am his daughter. He taught me everything. Kryptonians were always oppressors, they always required more and more, and the more Racker protested, the more Krypton stepped on us.” She looks at you. “Who’s to tell you won’t do it again after helping us unify the planet?”

“We never did that.” You answer back, a bit of anger in your voice. But you remember the way Brainiac took back some of the planets. Bombings, wars.

‘The Empire was gone, it was necessary, Zor’El. Now that we have further resources and your assistance, we can return to subtler methods of conquest.’ You can almost hear its voice.

“Maybe you didn’t, but your kind did.” Laria insists. “It’s the way an empire works. You will conquer and kill, then reap and oppress, then conquer and kill.”

“Should I remind you that you’re about to murder a president for an empire of your own?” You ask, somewhat puzzled by her logic.

“Which is why I know you would’ve killed him, if you had to.”

Maybe you would have. So what? It’s war. You recline on your chair. “Then if you know how this works and I know how this works, why even ask?”

Her expression seems to slump down. Sadness, maybe? You’re not really sure. You do know that she pissed you off with this useless conversation. A few minutes pass and you feel a bit sleepy, this seat is very comfortable.

“Zor’El?” You hear a voice ring through the earpiece.

You almost fall out of your chair. It’s Brainiac.

Laria looks at you. “You can go sleep at the back of the plane, if you want to.” There’s a very slight smile on her lips.

“I uh… Yeah, I will.” You reply. That smile, did she find it funny? By Krypton, if you didn’t have your collar on you. You head as far back as you can and lay on a bunk.

“Brainiac.” You whisper, you’re sure she can’t hear you.

“It is good to hear your voice again, Zor’El.” Brainiac replies. “I was able to override various Rackerian satellites. I was hoping you would obtain some kind of communications device in order to identify you.”

“How’d you know this was the one?”

“I made sure to implant a biomechanical chip on your arm before sending you down towards the planet.”

“So you knew where I was? Why didn’t you come for me?”

“I did not wish to risk your termination as a consequence of an ineffective operation.” It replies.

No matter. You bring Brainiac up to speed on what happened to you.

“I am glad your biological optic sensors are in a good state. The explosion of an ocular ray amplifier usually renders the user blind, but I did install some further safety precautions that I developed during the last 20 years.” Brainiac says.

You let out a gentle sigh in relief. “What about the collar I have on?”

“Without being physically present in some way, I cannot pinpoint the collar’s signal receptors. We may also run the risk of triggering a failsafe that would cause it to explode.”

“So? I continue with the Emperor’s plan?”

“Yes, you must gain his trust, have him remove the collar, then strike against him.”

“Gain his trust and strike him? But… I mean… he’s a smart Rackerian. He may be a good governor.”

“We cannot be lenient with those who fight back against the Empire, Zor’El.” Brainiac’s robotic tone shows a hint of disappointment. “The Emperor is using you for his own gain, you must use him for yours.”

For a moment, Brainiac goes silent, it’s processing. “The daughter. You can use her to gain the Emperor’s trust. Earn her trust and friendship, Zor’El.”

You stay silent and look back towards the cockpit. Laria is looking on at the Rackerian sky in front of her. “Laria’s friendship?”

“Participating in a covert operation together is a good way to build rapport. Keep her safe and make sure she believes she is your comrade and friend. Her relationship with you will influence her father positively, and he may remove the collar. Kazarrian tradition obligates one to treat their comrades-in-arms as equals.”

Brainiac pauses and thinks. “The intelligence department of Kazarria will soon regain control of their downed satellite. Our communications will cut. I will reengage as soon as I am able.”

“Wait, but… How do I make her my friend? She hates Kryptonians!”

Your reply is pure silence. Brainiac’s gone.

You sit on your bedside and look at Laria. You never had a friend. How does it work?

You get up and approach her, she looks back at you. “I think you talk in your sleep.” She says.

You freeze for a moment and clench your fist.

“I couldn’t hear what it was from here, but you were murmuring.” She continues.

“Yeah uh- I do that sometimes.” You reply trying to hide your sudden relief. Why didn’t she check what you were saying?

Laria brings her feet up onto the pilot’s seat and hugs her knees. “You know, you’re the first woman my age I spend time with.”

Huh? What’s this about? Didn’t she hate you just a moment ago? “Really?”

“Yeah. I’m the heir of Kazarria. I’m supposed to study, train and fight. I only speak to fellow soldiers or teachers.”

“You’re the heir?” You ask, surprised.

“I’m my father’s only child.” She says.

“I thought he’d have more, considering he’s the emperor.”

“He never had another woman after my mother died.”

Oh.

It is, time to ham it up for being the sole inheritor of a dead race's whole empire.

The mission is in our minds, but wtf is Laria doing, also deep inside our mind is an itch to have a friend, and a quip about her having a home planet (the superhero gene is in her) let's write.

You think of Brainiac’s mission for a moment, this would be a prime opportunity to fulfil that role, but this is just too weird for you. Why is she so friendly all of a sudden? She hated your guts before getting on this plane. “Why are you opening up to me?” You ask her.

She seems a bit surprised by your sudden question, then goes into deep thought. “We’re going on a mission together. Comrades-in-arms are… soulbound in a sense. They risk their lives together for the sake of the mission.”

You cross your arms, frustrated. “But… I’m a Kryptonian, you hate Kryptonians.”

“I do. I think I do.” She replies confused. “But you just look so… Normal?” She says that as she looks into your eyes, then looks away. “My father said your kind were like machines, uncaring, unfeeling. Seeking only efficiency from us inferior beings. Yet you don’t act like that.”

“As I said earlier, Kryptonians aren’t like your father described them.” You say, a little bit flustered because of the way she looked at you. Is that how people look at each other? It’s different from looking at Brainiac on a console.

“Maybe, yeah. Maybe things aren’t as father thinks they are. Did someone tell you what Rackerians were like before your mission?”

“Uh…” Not really. Brainiac told you that their physical capabilities were average and that they relied on their technology first and foremost to wage war. He also spoke about the precious value of some the processed alloys the planet could produce, and some other stuff about the agricultural yields of certain sectors…

You thought for too long and she seems to guess why. “They didn’t, right?” The light smile you saw before shows up. “Funny. Kryptonians were our bogeymen for two decades but to you, we’re just another planet.”

Yeah, of course, to be enlightened and helped, as all other planets of the Empire. Maybe Brainiac just didn’t think their culture was relevant to the mission, it’s an AI after all, it’s not gonna be telling you about every single little cultural aspect of a society when this mission was supposed to be in and out.

You don’t want to think too deeply about this, your mind’s a mess. Too much stuff at the same time. Things are simpler back at headquarters.

>Would you like to ask or say something else?
>Or should we move on to the mission.

>"Could you tell me a bit about the culture here? If we still have time before the mission and if we don't need to talk about that."
We are potentially gambling with our lives if we do the false flag plan. May as well squeeze out a tiny bit of favor from her to help the odds of her putting in a good word to keep us alive if the plan goes weird.
