Earth. Fire. Air. Water. Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world. But the new Avatar, a timid young Water Tribe girl named Itiqqa hasn’t even begun to master herself. Can she bring balance to the world?

=====

Welcome to Avatar: The New Age! As the opening and name of the quest imply, this will be taking place in a similar timeframe as Legend of Korra, though Aang died a few years later and a lot of the stupid shit from the comics and Korra won’t be making an appearance. I’m not saying this will be a fixfic, but I am saying that the only good part of this franchise is the original series. A couple of Korra episodes and like 2/5ths of the contents of the novels are okay too, I guess. What I’m saying is, don’t expect magic carpets, dykes, enbies, or to be able to metagame too hard. Now, without further ado:

=====

Previously on Avatar: During a tour of Air Temple Island, Ainu, a Kyoshi Warrior and new arrival in Union City, had a chance meeting with the new Avatar. The new Avatar, Itiqqa is a diffident young girl who feels unready to take on the responsibilities of the Avatar. Ainu, along with Itiqqa and Noyon, a streetwise teen Ainu met who turned out to be an airbender, quickly found themselves on the run from both the Union City police and the White Lotus who were both searching for the missing Avatar. After escalating encounters with the city’s gangs and the radical Equalists, the trio was seemingly saved by Tarrlok, a member of the United Federation Council.

“It’s not bad,” you prod at the bowl of sea prune stew in front of you with your spoon while trying to make small talk with Noyon, who sits across from you at the table in your supposed savior’s mountainside cabin.

“Not bad? We don’t even know the guy. I mean, I’ve heard of him, he’s some politician type, but him and his military cronies just helped smuggle us out of the city when Itiqqa said that’s what she wanted. It just feels off,” he grimaces while prodding his own bowl. “When I was a little kid,” he glances at the stairs, since Itiqqa and Tarrlok are both on the second floor, “my mom made this for me and my dad once, when I was a kid. It was his mom’s favorite but he never liked it. I thought Mom just messed it up, but now I’m pretty sure my dad was right.”

You nod to the first part of what he said, before responding, to the second, more quiet part. “It’s different,” you shrug, “Northern style instead of Southern, which makes sense, I think this guy is from the North.”

“Oh yeah, Kyoshi Island had a lot of contact with the Southern Water Tribe, have you ever been?”

“Just twice. I was really young the first time, so I don’t really remember. The second time was for a festival, so I didn’t get a good idea of what it’s like normal,” you look down at your bowl. “Wow, that makes me sound like such a tourist.”

“As long as you didn’t look like one,” Noyon jokes, and you both share a laugh.

Sometime later, after you’ve both finished, Itiqqa comes down the stairs with a sheepish smile on her face. Tarrlok follows soon after, planting a hand on her shoulder.

“I have to be in the city today,” the councilman says, oddly cheerily, “feel free to make yourselves at home. Itiqqa,” the Avatar looks up at the mention of her name, “may want to discuss what we talked about with you.” With that he pats her on the shoulder and makes his way to the door, “I’ll be back tonight, I hope your friends can help you make up your mind, Itiqqa.”

“What was that about?” Noyon asks once Tarrlok has been gone for a few minutes, before you get the chance.

“Oh um, we just talked about my plans, now that I’m out,” Itiqqa says once she takes a seat, prodding her fingers together. She’s not wearing her jacket, though it looks like she’d put her hood up if she had one. “Out- out of the city, I mean!” She clarifies, somewhat unnecessarily.

“What plans? I thought you just wanted a few weeks to get ready to see Tenzin,” you ask with a raised eyebrow.

Itiqqa chews her lower lip while doing her best to bore a hole in Tarrlok’s dining room table with her stare. “Well, I-I- I’m sorry really, I am, but um, I really, I really don’t think I’m ready,” before either you or Noton can interrupt, Itiqqa sucks in a deep breath and continues, “wh-when I say- it’s not… hm, I hate meditating, I don’t like it, but the thing is, it’s not that I’m b-bad with spirits, actually it’s the opposite b-but, it’s me, that’s the problem, and I don’t think I’m ready to have a spiritual m-master, yet, I need not a master, just to, um, balance? If that makes sense.”

You and Noyon share a sideways look, but neither of you shake your heads at her. “Sorta,” you split the difference, “but doesn’t Tenzin have a bunch of kids? And there are other monks on the island, there’s definitely someone who can help you, even if you’re starting over.”

“Nobody will be mad at you, the Air Acolytes are all about forgiveness and going with the flow,” Noyon reasons.

“Um, oh, yeah, that also- that’s true, I guess,” Itiqqa nods, still not meeting anybody’s eyes. “B-but there are other options,” for once her focus is on the ceiling instead of the floor.

>[1] Itiqqa suggests, eventually, that she should go to Gaoling in the southern Earth Kingdom, it’s not too big a city, and it’s right next to the Foggy Swamp, so she thinks she might be able to find a spiritual tutor there. Not that the Earth Kingdom has a particularly strong spiritual tradition.

>[2] Itiqqa suggests an idea she got from Tarrlok, that she should go to the Northern Water Tribe. Apparently, the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe is very spiritually connected, and the Spirit Oasis, where Avatar Aang had a spiritual breakthrough, is also up there. The White Lotus supposedly doesn’t have much of a presence there.

>[3] You know for a fact that the White Lotus has no presence on Kyoshi Island, and there are probably spirit tutors in the Earth Kingdom and Southern Water Tribe that would make the journey there. Convince Itiqqa that she should go there, even if it takes longer to arrange. (Roll)

>[4] Noyon tells Itiqqa to stay in Union City, or at least in the United Federation. She doesn’t have to

>[5] Noyon tells Itiqqa that she should avoid the White Lotus entirely and speak to Tenzin directly. He doesn’t have a plan for how to do that (yet), but you do like the sound of that. Even if you take a few days, Noyon is pretty sure that the other airbender will be more reasonable than the White Lotus. (Roll)

>[6] Write-in. (You’d better have a plan or good argument)

Try to get Itiqqa to go back to your home, even though you just got to Union City.

Surely, Tarrlok isn't as bad as he is in canon, right?

I need three 1d100s, either two over 60 or one over 90 to succeed.

How long was tomorrow?

Shouldn't have started a quest, wasn't ready. Maybe Saturday.

Hey just to let you know, I might be able to get an update or three out this week, but it's just as likely this thread doesn't get touched until the new year or not at all. I may even reevaluate if this quest, as it is now is worth your time and my effort. Sorry for a slow/nonstarter either way, though maybe it's for the best with this reception.

Most of us are still interested I would think. Understandable if you're busy at this time of the year though.
