Crrreeeaaakkkkk. The sound of a door opening on rusty hinges, followed swiftly by a slam as it closes, is the first thing to penetrate the thick fog of your pounding hangover. As your eyes flutter open, the dim light filling the room is enough to send brief spikes of agony through your already aching head. But as your vision adjusts, you find yourself seated in a dusty office. A heavy oaken desk sits before you, covered in a thick layer of dust—only disturbed by the imprint of your arms and head, where you must have leaned against it as you fell asleep last night. The rest of the room is much as you’d expect: a pair of dust-covered chairs across the desk from you, a door flanked by two large glass windows whose blinds are thankfully letting in only a sliver of light. A corkboard hangs on the wall to your right, with a few Pre-War posters and pamphlets still stuck to it, though a large, recently drawn map covers most of the board. As you begin to collect yourself, the sound of glass clattering shakes you from your reverie. A glass of clean-enough-looking water seemingly materializes on the desk before you. You instinctively reach for a weapon, but your hand grasps at empty air—you’ve apparently misplaced all of yours. As adrenaline surges and you blink your eyes clear, you spot the source of the glass: a young woman with short-cropped blonde hair. She had apparently been behind you as you woke and brought the glass. Her smiling face and comely good looks do little to set you at ease, but between the pounding headache and dry mouth, you take the offered glass and quickly drain its tepid contents. As you do, the young woman begins to speak…“Hey, Mayor! Hope you enjoyed last night’s celebrations and were able to get some rest. We were introduced last night, but I doubt you remember it. My name’s Ashley, and I’m your assistant! I can't wait to help you turn this town around!”>“Mayor? Hold on… Mayor? I’m no mayor—I don’t even remember how I got here!”“Oh wow, you must have enjoyed the party more than I realized… Of course you won the election—you’re the mayor now!”It’s starting to come back to you now—the election… Except it wasn’t much of an election. So the votes are in and it looks like we are going to be going with Charisma as our bonus stat and Benson Arizona as our town. Ill start writing expect an update sometime tonight
That's right, this is Benson—a decent-sized town along the I-10. A nice place with clean water from a fine well and enough food that folks don’t go hungry most of the time. It has a problem with raiders, but what town in these parts doesn’t? Most of the neighboring settlements are a little less than friendly, but that’s not unusual either. Beyond that, what little trade manages to make its way along the I-10 has to go through Benson, ensuring a trickle of goods and caps into the town. The election—right, that’s still a little fuzzy. You remember being invited to share some homebrew with a handful of passing acquaintances. The conversation turned to politics and how the town had been lacking a mayor and sheriff for months. A ransom deal with a group of Jackals had gone wrong, claiming both of their lives, and the town struggled on as something of a direct democracy in the intervening months. Most folks seemed to want firmer leadership, but no one was ready to step up. Apparently, you made some speech that convinced your acquaintances you were the man for the job. Then you remember being in the street, riling up a crowd. Then some bum challenging you—talking about a workers' revolution and the need to cast off bourgeois governance for good. Then you remember the tar, the feathers, and running the damn red out of town. Then there was some more homebrew, and, well… then you woke up mayor of Benson, apparently.>“Okay… yeah, it’s starting to come back to me… Ashley, right? You’re my assistant? Right, so… fill me in. I don’t know much about this mayor business, but I know the town needs some sort of leadership, and I ain’t about to back down from a challenge. So, fill me in—what’s this job look like?”“Well, to start…”
>>6184764So, I’m going to take a brief out-of-character moment to describe the mechanics of this game. You are the mayor of Benson, Arizona, a town of a little more than a hundred people—or, in game terms, 10 population. Your primary struggle will be keeping this population happy and healthy—especially if you don’t want to end up tarred and feathered yourself. This is primarily done by ensuring they have access to necessities. Necessities are goods your people simply cannot do without. Each unit of population will consume one unit of these goods per turn.Water – This one is self-explanatory. You’ll die without it. In Benson, you’re lucky, as the town hosts an artesian well that produces far more water than your town can consume—at least for now. To the point where I won’t even track it until your population massively explodes, you establish settlements outside of easy transport distance from Benson, or you set up large-scale irrigation projects that tax the well’s ability to provide water.Food – Much like water, your people won’t last long without food. In desperate times, they might get away with skipping a turn without food, but not much longer. The food situation in Benson is far less certain than water. Your food is produced by facilities within the town, though many of these don’t provide a consistent supply. For example, the Gecko Hunters’ Camp located on the southern edge of town produces 1d3 food per turn, while the truck gardens maintained by the townsfolk produce 1d6+1 food per turn. If both of these facilities produce their maximum amount of food, you’ll have no problem feeding the town; however, this won’t always be the case. Luckily, the previous administration left you a reasonable reserve of preserved food to give you some breathing room.Power – The least essential of the necessities, power represents your ability to provide electricity to the town. Giving people the ability to turn on a fan in the harsh Arizona heat can occasionally mean the difference between life and death. Some of your facilities also consume power—whatever surplus is left over after your facilities are powered is assumed to go toward fulfilling your population’s need for electricity.Morale – The last of the “necessities,” morale represents how your townsfolk feel about your rule and life in general. Morale isn’t generated or consumed but instead exists on a sliding scale between 0 and 10. A score of 5 represents total apathy, 10 represents total support for your regime and a positive outlook, and 0… well, if it ever reaches 0, you’re probably getting shot in the town square.
>>6184766Beyond necessities, there are a few other things you’ll need to track, mostly related to the production of new facilities, equipment, etc.Materials – This broad category represents everything from freshly made bricks to ancient I-beams salvaged from pre-war buildings. Nearly everything you construct or make requires materials.Chemicals – Like materials, chemicals are used in construction and other applications, but they have far more niche uses. Want to make medicine? You need chemicals. Need to fuel a vehicle? Chemicals. Trying to get into the drug trade? Chemicals.Components – Components represent the pieces of something substantial you’re trying to construct. For example, components of a fusion generator would be listed as Fusion Generator Components (⅕). When you reach (5/5) components, you’ll be able to employ whatever it is you were trying to build.Currency – Most often caps, currency represents the town’s store of liquid value. However, don’t expect the listed currency value to translate directly to in-game transactions. A single unit of currency represents the wages to employ a day laborer full-time for one turn. Roughly speaking, one cap in my system represents between 500-1000 caps in Fallout: New Vegas.Weapons – Pretty self-explanatory. Instead of tracking specific weapons, they will be categorized by type and quality. For example, a unit of Firearms (I) represents a high-quality, well-maintained pre-war rifle or a very good post-war copy. Meanwhile, Energy Weapons (II) might be a Minuteman-style laser musket, and Melee Weapon (III) could be a half-rotted 2x4.Luxuries/Miscellaneous – This broad category represents consumables that need to be accounted for separately. For example, your town’s stores might include 10 Stimpaks or 2 bottles of moonshine. These can be distributed to boost morale, address specific problems, or be withheld for trade. Now for the last bit of my spiel before we start the game: Each in-game turn represents roughly one month. You can undertake one Settlement Action (e.g., building a perimeter wall, training the militia, launching a large-scale scavenging program) and one Personal Action (e.g., interacting with characters in town, leading a scouting mission, finding a wife). Both actions will require a d20 roll, with bonuses or maluses depending on the action. At the beginning of each turn, I will subtract your population and facilities’ needs from your stockpile of resources, and at the end of the turn, I will roll your facilities’ production.
>>6184767It seemed as if hours had passed as Ashley droned on about the minutiae of how the previous mayor had run things and how the settlement was generally administered. Your throbbing headache, which had started to recede, was back in full force. When Ashley paused to take a breath, you seized the opportunity to get a word in.>"Okay, I think I get the gist of this mayor business. Why don’t you fill me in on the… situation outside the town’s walls?"The young woman looked a bit peeved at being interrupted but composed herself quickly, striding to the map pinned to the corkboard and gesturing at various features as she spoke.“Well, here we are on the south side of Interstate 10, where State Route 80 branches off. We get occasional caravans down both these roads, but they’re few and far between. Immediately across the I-10 from us is the town of Tabernacle, a Mormon community of a few dozen. We've always had good relations with them, and they may as well be a part of Benson—except for their stubbornness. They don’t have a good source of water, and we have a treaty with them where they trade caps for our water. They’re well-armed for a settlement of that size and a bit peculiar with their faith—men having multiple wives and all that business. Though their elder, Zedekiah, is a fair dealer and was a good friend of the last mayor."“Following State Route 80 southeast, there’s a pre-war observatory defended by a bunch of military-grade robots. Nobody really knows what’s up with that, but the few fools who have tried to get in were never seen again. Further along the road is St. David, a settlement about half the size of ours, run by the monks of Holy Trinity Monastery. They’ve always been cordial to us, though they’re in the bad habit of extracting tithes from anyone traveling along the 80, and the abbot of the monastery seems to have a real issue with the people of Tabernacle."“A ways further south along the 80 is the town of Tombstone, with about twice the population of Benson. The town’s run by a colonel of the Arizona Rangers and is reasonably prosperous, though with that civil war tearing through the old republic in northern Mexico, a lot of Tombstone’s trade has dried up. A ways west and a bit north of Tombstone lies Whetstone, a town about the same size as Benson. It was run by a Ranger captain, but a group of Jackals overran the town not too long back and drove the Rangers out. Now they use the town as a base of operations to raid the small homesteads and isolated tribes in the countryside. Some of our town’s hunters have even seen them poking around our hunting grounds.”
>>6184771“As for events further afield, our nearest big city is TwoSun to the west along the interstate. It’s been a battle royale between raider factions for as long as anyone can remember. But recently, the Cult of Nas seems to have come out on top in that fight—some weird half-tribal raiders. They worship engines, I think, and rumor has it they’ve fixed up a few dozen cars. Between us and them is a bunch of hill country occupied by nomadic bands of Apache. They’re just as likely to trade with you as they are to scalp you in your sleep. Generally, we try to avoid them, but they do a pretty good job of keeping the rougher elements out west from getting to us."“To the east, there isn’t much of anything—scattered tribes, towns, and raider bands all at each other’s throats. To the south is Mexico. There used to be a pretty impressive republic down there, controlled most of the land between the Gulf of California and the Gulf of America, but some big civil war broke out in the past couple of years. Now all we really hear about them are the horror stories from the few refugees that make it this far north without dying of thirst."“Now, to the north in the rest of Arizona—well, I’ve heard a bunch of rumors lately. Some tribal horde has poured out of the Grand Canyon and stomped on the Flaggers, a big tribe that used to control Flagstaff and the area around it. The Rangers then went to fight them and got beat. Then the Republic of Phoenix put its army into the field and got beat as well. Rumor says they’re trying to negotiate a surrender, but I find that hard to believe. They’ve been the big fish in Arizona for too long to give it up that easy.”Ashley finally stops and wipes her brow before taking a swig of water from a second glass she had hidden somewhere."“Well, I’ve been talking long enough, Mayor. I figure the best way for you to learn is by doing. So, what’s our first order of business?”

Turn 1 Settlement Action > Repair the towns Generator Roll (15) >”Well Ashley first things first we need to get that old generator fixed most folk are forced to do without electricity and I don’t know what we’d do if the thing ever broke down for good we’d have no way of powering the wells pump.” “I couldn’t agree more, I’ll start asking around and see if we can come up with something..” A few weeks had passed and you had busied yourself finding candidates to fill the post of sheriff that has been slimmer pickings then you’d like but you’ve turned up a few folk that might be worth a shit. Creeeaaak… slam As you look up from your desk you see Ashley hurrying across the room in her usual excited puppy manner. Before she plops herself down in one of the chairs opposite you.“So boss you asked me to look into getting the generator fixed and well I’ve found us a couple of options on how we can go about getting it taken care of” >”Well let’s hear it then what do you got for me?” “So I asked around town first and we don’t have anyone who has any real expertise in working on these pre war generators, hell for most folk the only generator they’ve ever seen is the towns. But Old Larry said he’d be willing to give it a whack his words, he’s a reasonably technical man he built his whiskey still from scratch and has some experience repairing more complicated machinery. Still I don’t know if I’d trust him to do it there’s a big jump from occasionally fixing a terminal and making moonshine to fixing a fusion generator”
>>6185925“Beyond that Josiah Turnbull and his caravan are in town heading west on the I-10, when he heard we were looking for someone to fix up the generator he offered to look for a technician in Two-Sun when he gets there obviously he has a fee for this service but he’s a reliable enough sort so I know he will ask around. The problem is I’m not certain it would be a good thing to advertise our existence to Two-Sun especially now that they’re mostly done killing each other. But at the same time from everything I’ve heard the Cult of Nas does have some really skilled technicians even if they do call them priests.” “I also spoke to brother Gonzales from the monastery down in Saint David; he was in town hearing the confessions of our catholic residents. He said his order would be more than willing to help as they have a similar generator in their monastery and should be able to fix it no problem. When I asked him what their help would cost us he assured me it was an act of good Christian charity, but then implied his father-abbot would like to see us distance ourselves from the blasphemous polygamists in Tabernacle. I don’t know exactly what he was implying here but I imagine it will involve cutting off our water shipments to Tabernacle.”
>>6185926“Finally I received an odd offer yesterday, a pair of strangers all but ambushed me well after dark, one of them was a mountain of muscle in a remarkably well preserved black business suit and the other was a woman a little older than me age wearing a lab coat over a pair of grease stained coveralls. She did the talking, and told me they represented the society whatever the hell that is and they could help us with our generator if we helped her associates gain access to the observatory. I wasn’t able to get any details out of her, she was remarkably tight-lipped, just told me where to find her an old warehouse east of town a few miles away and to not keep her waiting. Sorry I can’t give you more about this one but I’ve got nothing to add other then the pair of them seemed extremely competent if a little suspicious, like something out of those Pre War Mark Nancy novels.” How are you going to try and repair the generator? >Let Old Larry take a crack at it what’s the worst that could happen (free) >Have Turnbull try to find us a technician in Two Sun (-5 Caps) >Take the monks offer (cancel trade treaty with tabernacle) >This Society seems to have their shit together let’s go with their offer (?) >None of these options seem good we can try again some other time to get the generator fixed
>>6185928Appoint a new sheriffRoll (12)With the matter of the generator settled you turn your attention back to choosing a new sheriff and you’ve narrowed the field down to three candidates. Firstly Carmen Gallo a friend of yours from childhood and one tough bitch she spent her teenage and early adult years running off and on again with raider gangs, merc outfits, and caravans really any lifestyle that would scratch her itch for adventure and violence. Lately though shes mellowed out somewhat having kicked her psycho addiction seemingly for good. Just knowing her history she would seem like a good fit for the position a skilled combatant that you know for a fact you personally can count on no matter the situation. The issue is well there isnt a polite way to put it she is one mean ass dyke bitch who has a way of rubbing just about everyone the wrong way, coupled with a fierce misandrist streak making you and her younger brother the only men she can stand. You doubt her ability to work well enough with others to really be a good sheriff. Secondly you have One Leg Jack an old grey bearded coot, missing his left leg below the knee and has been getting around on a peg leg for as long as anyone can remember. But despite his age, eccentricities, and physical disabilities he is the single best hunter and trapper Bensons ever seen. He is also universally beloved in town being something of a deranged grandfather for the whole community, your certain the town would approve of him as sheriff the question is more or less does he make sense as a right hand man. He can handle himself in a fight as long as he doesnt have to run anywhere, hes popular with the people, but hes been known to have poor judgement prtciularly in regards to overestimating his own capabilities. One of the theories folk have on how he lost that left leg is he tried to clear out that
>>6185929Finally there is Cassidy Hawke better known as Coyote he’s a merc of some note he’s ran with caravans up and down the I-10 for a decade or so and has a good reputation for getting his clients through and in Arizona that’s not something many men can say. Nobody doubts his capability as a combatant. The problem is you don’t know much about him personally; he's not from around here. The only reason he’s even an option is that he just happened to be passing through when he heard you were looking for a sheriff and threw his hat in the ring for the job. Who are you going to appoint as sheriff? >Carmen Gallo your trusted childhood friend with a checkered past (free)>One Leg Jack the towns local eccentric and a extremely competent hunter and scout (1 Moonshine per turn) >Cassidy “Coyote” Hawk the competent if somewhat unknown mercenary (3 Caps per turn)
>>6185928>This Society seems to have their shit together let’s go with their offer (?)https://youtu.be/r6qt_70iGk4?si=JCkrqZxFNBhptKxBProbably a bad idea trusting tbe BoS.but fuck it.>Cassidy “Coyote” Hawk the competent if somewhat unknown mercenary (3 Caps per turnJust cause I'm committing to mystery box this turn
>>6185928>Have Turnbull try to find us a technician in Two Sun (-5 Caps)>>6185930>>Cassidy “Coyote” Hawk the competent if somewhat unknown mercenary (3 Caps per turn)You didn't finish >>6185929's post, it just ends with "One of the theories folk have on how he lost that left leg is he tried to clear out that"
Interesting quest here Wasteland QM- you've peeked my interest. One concern I have is that one "personal action" a month may be too little to try and plant our roots to any interesting npcs (that and it may be a bit vague the idea of stuff like "find a wife"). I'd like to suggest some sort of additional "Socialize" kind of action where we can get some input from someone in town on a topic, lore, or a recent event a la the advisors from early Civilization games. The default could always be our assistant, Ashley. The action's more fluff than crunch.>>6186023+1
>>6185928>Have Turnbull try to find us a technician in Two Sun (-5 Caps) The Mormons seem like good neighbors so fuck the Catholics and those two strangers are more radiant than a glowing one.>>6185930>Cassidy “Coyote” Hawk the competent if somewhat unknown mercenary (3 Caps per turn)Carmen sounds like she'd constantly be an issue. Cassidy seems like a solid choice if a little expensive.
Alright folks by my accounting it looks as if we are going to be rolling with having Turnbull try to get in contact with a tech from Two-Sun and Hiring Cassidy as Benson's new sheriff. On a non gameplay related note I want to apologize for the low quality posts I've been putting out from formatting issues to just kinda sub par writing. I can tell I'm rushing myself and putting out lower quality content than I would like. It's primarily on account of my only experience running online play by post games like this is nation roleplays via discord where if you dont GM something in a matter of hours the zoomer on the other end gets bored and moves on with their life. So going forward expect slightly more time in between posts so I can work on increasing the quality. There has also been some interest expressed in getting to know the town more and having a more individual level roleplay. I'll be attempting to integrate more opportunities for that going forward starting with this next post. I thank y'all for your understanding and look forward to seeing where our little town ends up.
Hey guys, did we enable the wacky wasteland perk?
I don't know guys, like the QM said, I don't think it's a good idea to announce our existence in Two-Sun just yet.

I feel like we should get the Sheriff to train some of our guard and have him lead an expedition to the observatory. I have a feeling there's some nice loot there if "The Society" is interested, but with how heavily guarded it is we might have to settle for picking off some of those robots over the course of multiple turns. If we're paying him the caps we might as well make the most out of it.
>>6185930>Help the society>CassidyWe should look into the observatory if pre-war cosplaying nerds are interested in it, even if it can't be overtaken yet. Scouting could provide an idea of easier entry points or a potential solution to the robot problem that doesn't cost lives.

I'd probably be hard, but I'd successful they would be extremely useful. They can grow as tall if not taller than a person, they're fast bastard, there are four flavors of them, and you can make some mid to end game tier gecko backed armor.Has the Town of Benson been fully scavanged yet, or are there still some buildings yet to be picked? What about underground Benson? There a sewer system? What are the truck farms? Little bargen boxes in the truck beds? Would it be possible to increase how much water we get by reducing how much water we expend? I think there was a farming method where you stacked layers of soil, wood chunks, food scraps, and that hot only gives your crops more nutrients but also retains water better. If the Mayor needs a wife, could he travel past Tabernacle and use his charisma to seduce a female deathclaw? Assuming those deathclaws are intelligent if it least a few of them being smart enough to talk?
