It's just what they LIKE to do and it just happens to confer the ability to better select mates but that's not what they "supposedly want". They want is to literally look nice so that when they look in the mirror they feel less dread over their insecurities, not because it will min max their gene lineage and you being able to only think of this as some sort of strategy game is clear autism

Theyre not automatons doing something for 0 reason, theyre not consciously aware of the subconscious mechanisms at play. The way im describing it is a tad misleading in the readers interpretation, because it isnt some overt concerted effort, rather its just what they do.
