I torrented the manga. You can find on the berserk wiki which volumes cover which arcs. The original anime only covered the Golden Age arc, plus that later fight with the Snake Lord. In the manga, he also kills a female apostle, and the Count, in volumes before the Golden Age arc.
The Golden Age volumes can be skipped, except the Eclipse, since Skull Knight appears there, and he's an important character. Then you can read up to the end!
IMHO the arc that starts right after- Conviction arc- is the best part of Berserk. It has the best written and most memorable antagonists. Later it drops off, since the antagonists are pure mndless evil.
(Griffith does his own thing and barely interacts with Guts)

But for me, it's the 1967 manga and 1969 anime. Maybe the modern version is cooler and more epic, but the classics are just more soulful. People die bloody violent deaths on every other page, but Osamu Tezuka makes it a breezy cartoonish joy to read. The anime's not as good but you can see the seeds of greatness. The manga is probably the best version. It doesn't take itself seriously, so you'll see things like author/character cameos and real world references and characters breaking the fourth wall to mention the audience. It's just meant to be pure fun. You will dislike the ending though. It's not a happy ending or a sad ending or any type of ending at all. It just ends. It's short, only 19 chapters, you could breeze through it quickly when you're taking a break from your longer series.

The anime is harder to watch because the technique of pacing hadn't been perfected yet. Some parts of it really drag and move slowly, it might put you to sleep. But it's still a fun combination of family-friendly and family-unfriendly content that shouldn't mix well but somehow do. One advantage over the manga: It has a proper ending.

Anyone have any romance books/anime/shows recommendations? I watched crash landing on you a while ago and really liked that. I just finished arcane and jinx and ekko's romance sparked something in me. Especially when at the end ekko was sitting on the ledge and lit the paper on fire. I cried

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is a light hearted watch that hits home in some places.

Summertime Render is way better than it had any right to be. The ending was phenomenal.

I've also thoroughly enjoyed a few anime movies recently. Pretty sure they don't count as pure romance but will make you cry.

Every time I think about finishing it and posting it here I feel knots in my stomach.
