I listened to a podcast about this and their diagnosis was that they're in a permanent state of adolescent rebellion against "selling out" because they're caught between the boomers who they simultaneously despise for being uncool and resent because they could never live up to their success, and millennials who embraced the digital revolution in a way that they were too old to mimic by the time it happened and thus left them in the dust. So they're trapped in this outmoded cultural stance of wanting to be "cool" in opposition to a cultural circumstance that doesn't exist anymore while also being "lame" in the context of the subsequent cultural revolution that passed them by, producing a petulant angst

This seems to be more of an American thing than anything. Americans conflate complaints with intellectualism. They think you're stupid if you don't have a list of criticisms towards every little thing that happens in your life, and they think you're complacent in your suffering if you don't bring it up constantly. They were raised to believe their opinion matters. Sorry buddy, but it doesn't.
