I listened to a podcast about this and their diagnosis was that they're in a permanent state of adolescent rebellion against "selling out" because they're caught between the boomers who they simultaneously despise for being uncool and resent because they could never live up to their success, and millennials who embraced the digital revolution in a way that they were too old to mimic by the time it happened and thus left them in the dust.
