I was really surprised by how many women like anime, but now I'm sure that the majority of anime fans are women. When you get out of the bubble of male anime spaces, you see tons and tons of women
it really makes more sense, obsessing over cute characters and cute art styles is a really feminine activity

Anime is a niche in wider society, and its for children and young adults primarily. Most people who are into it at one point grow out of it, and it's embarrassing. Anime has a big problem with sexualizing underage girls and story-telling centered around wish fulfillment. Normal adults who have enjoyed it may still enjoy it a little, but keep their enjoyment private and out of public view.
