I didn't really think much of the belle sauvage or the secret commonwealth when I first read them when they came out, can't believe that was 2017 and 2019, almost twenty five years ago now. I think my problem was that it had been a good long while since I'd last read his dark materials so I'd forgotten a lot of characters and nuance and just knew the general outline. Having been on audiobook tip lately however I steamrolled through the materials and Lyra's Oxford and immediately jumped into the new series and thoroughly enjoyed them. They both got a bit bogged down here and there but the originals had a similar problem, Pullman is a very good author but he does tend to get carried away beating the crap out of you with his religion bad messaging. The new ones go a bit hard on the you-must-have-empathy for those less fortunate than you, and the chapter with the refugees in the sea was really very pointless for the story, I get the point but move on already. Thatbeingsaidalthoughbeit I am very much looking forward to the final one coming out next month. I hope he doesn't fumble it as I expect a joyous reunion between Lyra and Pan and hopefully the older handsome smart and all round great Oxford professor chap doesn't end up fucking the 20 year old main character, because that'll make the whole thing into a billysue jerk off fantasy for PP and I really think he ought to be better than that. Time will tell.
