Crazy how multiculturalism is literally the single biggest siphon of energy in the entire country. EVERYTHING results from it. Every bit of political, social and economic dialogue is based in it to some degree. Right leaning people spends enormous amounts of energy criticising it and left leaning types spend equally enormous amounts of energy defending it. The entire point of the British state is to manage to country in the face of multiculturalism. Economics, foreign policy etc. seem paltry in comparison. It's driving me fucking insane.

No, X is old and stable. Wayland support is a bit of a mess on most desktop environments. I hate Gnome and that's the only one which wants to do away with it. Wayland has always been glitchy for my old system.

when i was into programming, the GNU utilities were such an unreadable clusterfuck compared to e.g. BSD. hundreds of lines of code for, say, 'wc', which you LEARN to write when learning C.

now i get that times change and you have stuff like Unicode and translations to consider, but gcc simply has so much cruft to it. dependencies on other GNU shit and it DOES get all bloated, a ton of feature creep, which goes against what i like about UNIX (the whole 'Keep It Simple, Stupid', programs do one thing and do it well, all of that).

rms has been pretty explicit that Emacs is MEANT to be this swiss army knife, for example. when really i just want small, simple programs. and the X Window System is a pretty legacy system they just kept piling stuff on top of (e.g. you had X11, then a window manager on top of that, then GTK for widgets...blablabla).

seems like people were trying to cut the GNU cancer out of Linux for decades, but it's like a virus you can't get rid of.
>>
>>82712782
no. I don't even go outside every day.
I buy some items online maybe every couple of weeks.
>>

also, on an ethical/philosophical level, the GPL is pretty draconian. a bit like 'be free (under our definition of free), or else'.

>>
>>82712891
>Ubuntu is going Wayland only with its vanilla distro.
i swear i heard THIS shit a decade ago, too.

really they ought to just create a stable, modern OS that cuts out the legacy software as much as possible. maybe that means cutting out dependencies so older software won't run, but oh well. update your shit to deprecate ye olde libraries or GET OUT.
>>
>>82712819
Could always just go with openBSD or some other such niche OS. I like arch because Linux is obviously way better than windows/appleshite (though admittedly not perfect), but also has a lot of documentation to accompany it.
>>
>>82712934
I hate constant updates that may break something. For me it's Debian with a bare desktop.
>>
Microsoft kept trying to push C#/.NET and then everything from some XAML/web-based/Metro nonsense and it did my tits in.

i think there's some 'lower level' code in Windows (maybe to this day?) to make GUI software with widgets and forms and all that. but realistically people just used C++ even if they hated sepples. but you could NOT write that: to get MFC code you HAD to use some windows designer tool. absolute nightmare.

Tcl/Tk was pretty cool. given all the different options on Linux, it would be nice if someone wrote a basic library to do that from the ground up (ideally in C, or a C library but with some kind of human-writeable markup language).

yeah if i was to run Linux now it'd be Debian netinst (unstable) and one of the metapackages. it does a good job of just pulling everything in whether you want GNOME, KDE, whatever. not far off Arch really, just a bit less bleeding-edge. Arch was cool but shit DID break on me.

what was that set of standard UNIX utilities that was a minimalist alternative to GNU? BlackBox, or something? i remember you could grab those on Arch, everything just werked (since you really shouldn't be depending on --gnu-exclusive-option anyway).

It's a cycle. Amazon became more coinvent, especially when they did their whole prime next day thing. I fully switched to online only when prime became a thing and I could get almost everything delivered to my door next day. I remember I ordered a new lego set and got it on the day of release. No chance I would have been able to do that if I went out to buy it on the day of release. Would have been sold out.

Because of that, I stopped going into town as much, because of that more shops close down as people stop going in. More shops close down = less of a reason to go out to town = keep buying more online. Cycle.

Hyprland was fucking cool as fuck when it was new. Nowadays it's pretty slop-tier. Too many people making 'just passable' rices but over-complicating everything with a million programs which ostensibly try and optimise things like window management, file searching, music playing etc. but in the end just add layers of bloat.

It can look cool, but too often it becomes more of an audio visual experience rather than a user-friendly desktop experience that computers should be.

Went to GAME to look for two niche games. Digimon and Trails in the Sky both on PS5. Of course, they didn't have it and when I asked the guy at the counter he looked at me if I just spoke French, since they don't know anything except CoD or FIFA.

That's why I have to order off Amazon. I do miss the days of Electronic Boutique and Grainger Games. Used to have a good chinwag with the employees in there about niche JRPGs and whatnot.

good article on the whole Amazon-getting-worse phenomenon. 'enshittification' is a daft term (and Cory Doctorow was always one of THOSE bloggers), but this was an interesting read. bit shite how much of it all is by design.

cor glad someone else remembers these. i'm sure plenty of GAME lads know about games simply because they play games, but in EB they actually had tech knowledge too. dunno if they did repairs in the shop, but they knew how to do that thing in Pokemon to reset the clock.

feels quaint when it's not JUST a chin-wag but you're talking to a shopkeeper where it's their trade. can't just go into Iceland start asking about different cuts of beef.

i think it's because working in a shop is 'just a job'. you sell the items on the shelves.

Tradesmen are limited supply now. Because of this they get hounded for jobs. So they're picking and choosing the best bang for their buck. Been like this since Covid. Who's saying he isn't? The only thing I ever really see people criticise him on is the fucking Israel-Palestine stuff, but holy fucking shit I do not care about that crap. When it comes to England he's correct about everything.

>>82719640
i don't care about random YouTubers, but when he went into REAL politics and actually had to do interviews and all that, he came across really thick.

one of those guys who's 'internet smart' talking into a microphone, but when actually challenged, you can see him stumbling and weaselling his way out of questions. (although i'm sure he'd be the one telling how important the art of rhetoric is.)
>>
>>82719640
People still kind of giggle when he comes up like it's 2017, and he's still doing the "Liberalist" bit.
I don't think I have a single qualm with him these days. He's actually just correct.
He transcended the stupid internet troll political scene and they're all butthurt about it.
>>
>>82719667
"real politics" being what in this context? Getting clowned on by spin doctors?
>>
HHL is my spin doctor
>>
>>82719667
I sort of agree, but you have to remember that politics and politicians today are entirely based around PR. They live and die on how well they interview, so of course they practice non-stop for media appearances.

Sargon doesn't, but contrast when he talks about issues versus when a politician does. Sargon gets passionate and might stumble over words, but is obviously correct; a politician will keep this artificial soft smile plastered on their face, carefully recite the rehearsed 'line' or soundbite on whatever given topic they've been told to and when the interviewer tries to dig down a bit and ask a real question or insist upon a real answer they just keep smiling and say 'look, this issue is very complex, so I just want to reiterate [rehearsed line] and I think it would be improper to comment further'.

'Real' politics is so artificial and fake and gay. I don't hold it against Sargon for not devoting his career to learning how to be a preened mouthpiece.

>>82719673
Yeah, I remember that lol, I even remember before when he was all about anti-feminism. These days he's straight up a patriot and it's hard to watch a video of his and find real fault with it. Also he's lost a lot of weight which is good, became a father and a husband. He's doing it right and he's fed up with the fucking cunts in charge. Good man, unironically.
>>
>>82719681
just random interviews on Newsnight, the radio, etc. i know the interviewers tend to be shit, but that doesn't make him right.

he even speaks in the 'smart guy' voice. it's that old thing about how trve intellectuals don't need to do that. wouldn't want him as my MP even if i'd 100% agreed with UKIP.
>>
>>82719708
>'Real' politics is so artificial and fake and gay. I don't hold it against Sargon for not devoting his career to learning how to be a preened mouthpiece.

this is absolutely true, too. i think it's definitely gone too far in the fake direction. "let me be clear" sound-bites and all that, we know how politicians talk.

but he's neither good at that, nor good at coming across like an earnest salt-of-the-earth bloke. he doesn't even come off like a smart academic who knows what he's talking about, really. more like someone really keen to argue with you on an online forum (and you end up just ignoring them).
>>
>>82719710
>he even speaks in the 'smart guy' voice.
No he doesn't. He just sounds like he's from the South, and hasn't adopted black intonations like half of the youth
>>

>>
>>82719721
I see what you're saying, but I think on some level it sounds like you want him to be more of the typical polished, reserved news anchor type, but that's just not his brand. He's new media and independent. His audience are young online people and they're fucking sick of, like you said, the "let me be clear" class of cunts that have clogged the system for decades. I don't think he tries to come across as a salt-of-the-earth bloke and like this lad said>>82719731 honestly he just sounds like a guy from the south who hasn't adopted an MLE affectation aka just a normal guy.

He's a good lad imo.

i think even if you put together some YouTube thinkpiece or an indie documentary, it should have the same level of polish and editorial standards as a typical written work or telly programme would.

again i'll admit i haven't really watched his own videos that he makes on his own terms (not relevant to my interests) but shouldn't being a good presenter be one of the things he has going for him?

again he COULD be your typical Oxbridge PPE type, knows his classics, all that. or he could be some working-class bloke wot wants to make a difference, politics is for everyone!

he's not even somewhere in the middle: he's like some separate thing that spawned from the internet. and at the end of the day when it comes to informing my opinions (or god forbid, actually being in the House of Commons) that's really not what i want tbqh.
>>
>>82719741

>>
>>82719741
Books are an antiquated format at this point. Just the way it is. Why make a point in 500 pages, when you can make it in series of youtube videos that grow and react to feedback in real time?
>>
>>82719757
That's fine, and I got the sense that his running as an MP was more of a gimmick than a genuine desire to be part of the Parliamentary system, which he fully recognises is mostly useless and broken. But yeah overall I think he's aiming to do his own thing. The Lotus Eaters podcast is quite polished in terms of production, while his personal channel is just the normal sitting in front of a camera with screengrabs popping up next to him which he talks about. It's mostly typical internet commentary style, but I think he does it well. And of course most importantly he's right about it all. I'm not dogmatically pro-Sargon as a person, I just think he's a decent guy and makes use of his large platform to put out good content on important issues.
>>
>>82719775
again i agree with the extent of the fakeness, they're not actors. but they should be able to handle themselves in a discussion.

listen to Enoch Powell or Tony Benn. very different views. but they were both quick-on-their-feet in a discussion/debate. a lot of these young'uns all do this trick where they don't answer the question, and instead move on to some prepared script like autistic people do.
>>

That *is* what I want to be honest. Because the internet is the world of the now.
I don't really care what some dinosaur who doesn't understand how to operate windows, or Bazza who has never contemplated life beyond the telly and the pub have to say about things. They're only seeing a slice of reality, and living in a dying echo of the 90's, really.

i can absorb information from a book better than i can from a video, tbqh. i think i'm more of a "semantic" learner than a "visual" learner.

although, the signal-to-noise ratio is way lower with YouTube. in traditional publishing you'd at least have an editor, people looking over it. and even for a web page, someone could email about an error, so you update the page. can't really do that with a YouTube video. that's it, published forever.

The written word is better for communicating very specific details because you can take your time and choose the exact right words and rethink and edit to make the text better. Books will always have their place and anyone who is broadly anti-book on principle I would urge to reconsider. No to mention the wealth of historical literature that you're missing out on.

That being said there's nothing wrong with short form content as such, it's just that the barrier for entry is non-existent now, so while in the past if you wanted your book to be carried forward through to posterity you should probably have something damn good to say in it, nowadays anyone can make a video and have it immortalised and jostled in the machine learning preference match algorithm along with everyone else.

I always recommend not to go for pop-sci or pop-phil types books because they're by definition written for people who have a cursory interest at best and need convincing to stay on past page 20. Try and go for introductions written by academics in a field but not marketed towards the general consumer. Think university introduction courses, books expanded from journal articles, passion projects not intended for retail etc.

One very good aspect of modernity is that you can give Mr Bezos 40 quid or so and have delivered to your door a collection of books on any topic you could possibly think of which, if you read, will give you a better grasp of that topic than 99.99% of the general population (and 99.99% of MPs for the matter too). There are obviously highly technical subjects which you need a lot of foundational education to really grapple with, like protein folding or algebraic topology, but this principle applies to most topics. Modernity gets a bad rap imo.

my issue is less with YouTube specifically, more video as a format, and how independently-made web videos come to be.

although YouTube itself with all its algorithms and advertising IS dogshit. people do actively go against what they want to make/say in order to get clicks, keep advertisers happy, whatever.

in an ideal world we'll go back to a more decentralised internet. ignore everything about YouTube besides the fact it's somewhere you can host videos (which is all it once was).

Debate in the commons is a joke. It's literally pointless since the introduction of party politics and the whipping system. There is no 'debate', you just vote on your party line or you're kicked out. A total waste of time. An optimised party in Parliament would be 20-30 full time MPs who make up the Cabinet and live/work in London, then 300-400 estate agents who occupy the necessary constituent MP positions around the country and turn up for important votes, tick the boxes, then fuck off back to work again. Maybe give them a hundred quid each time to incentivise them. No need for them to be getting a 93k salary for doing pantomime fake political theatre.

Everyone but normal people, basically.

>>
Fucking old useless commie types. The sort who say 'we don't talk about her in this house' if you say the name Thatcher. The kind of people who think 'Putin's agents are everywhere sowing Division'.
