>>82899198pogeymon...energypowder better and cheaper than potions (more heal for your money in other words) but it makes your pokemon dislike you a little. there are several items like this sold by an herbal healing person, its basically eastern traditional medicine stuff in the game. theres no real reason to use them in a normal playthrough as money isnt hard to get, but there isnt really a downside either, as your pokemon liking or disliking you doesnt do anything unless its too high level and you dont have all the gym badges yet. you only get access to them fairly late in the game so its unlikely your pokemon will actually start disobeying.the one effect is that the move "return" does more damage the more your pokemon likes you, so it will do less, and the move "frustration" equivalently does more the more your pokemon dislikes you...pokemon naturally grow to like you very quickly so frustration isnt generally much use, but sometimes people will use it instead of return for a goof, and in that case the only easy way to keep a pokemon disliking you is by constantly giving them herbal medicines like energypowder.
theres also some pokemon like most baby pokemon as well as golbat and probably others that evolve only if they like you above a certain amount at the time they level up, so if you want to prevent one of those pokemon from evolving you can give them a ton of herbal medicine just before they level up. there are some reasons you might want to do that, as unevolved pokemon usually learn moves quicker and sometimes learn special moves if you keep them unevolved up to high levels. theres also at least one item (eviolite) that only not-fully-evolved pokemon can use, it boosts defenses by quite a lot so it might be useful to keep something unevolved in this way if youre doing a weird strategy. however you can also press b while a pokemon is evolving to cancel it...so it isnt that useful to do this, tho theres of course a chance you forget to press b. but you can also have a pokemon hold everstone to not evolve. so its not that useful for this i dont think.HOWEVER thats for playing the game the normal way. if youre playing with special rules to make the game harder, like nuzlocke-ing, then it can be useful as some of these rules restrict the amount of money you can earn. butterspeed nuzlocke rules (which i invented) mean you can't grind trainers or wild pokemon for money or items to sell, so your money is limited, and the increased healing efficiency of herbal medicine might be useful. one of the hardest special rulesets is nuzlocke with no pokemon centers, which means you can't heal your pokemon in any free way and have to rely on potions. in that ruleset the increased heal-per-pokedollar would probably be useful, but ive never played that way as it seems crazy hard. (no pokemon centers also means you cant restore pp, so you can only use a given move 5-35 times, less if its more powerful, and your only way to restore pp is a few pretty rare items, learning new moves, or letting a pokemon die and using another. butterspeed is just nuzlocke rules + no grinding.
i was originally just calling it a "no grind nuzlocke" but ive started calling it butterspeed on account of a shiny butterfree i happened to get on my 3rd or 4th attempt at doing it in emerald, which also happened to be my first successful attempt. my shiny butterfree survived the whole time without fainting which is more or less a miracle. i protected him s much as i could but did send him in when it was my only good option.if youre not familiar, basic nuzlocke rules are that pokemon have to be retired if they ever faint, and youre only allowed to catch the first pokemon you encounter in a given area. its a pretty fun way to force yourself to pay more attention to the game and to use pokemon that you otherwise might not use. however the issue is that you can prevent things from fainting by simply grinding them all to level 100 (or the max level where they'll still obey you with however many badges you have) which renders it kind of boring if you play safely. so i decided to see if i could do it without "grinding" at all -- i wasnt allowed to re-battle any trainers (in games where that's an option) and i was only allowed to either catch or fight the first wild pokemon i encountered in a given area, unless my fastest pokemon failed to run away from it. this leads to really fast playthrough because theres no way to spend time to get stronger, you just have to use what you have.
another rule is that i didnt use the starter, but was allowed to train the first pokemon i caught up to level 5 (the level of the starter pokemon). this makes the first few trainer battles actually quite hard! its people with like a level 7 pidgey or two level 6 rattatas when you only have like a level 6 pidgey, rattata or poochyena and level 2 or 3 caterpie or wurmple. (you get to access 2 areas with wild pokemon before the first trainer, at least in emerald. there's one battle with the rival when you only have the starter and one fixed battle with a poochyena to save the professor, so usually your starter gets to 6, and then you bank it once you have poke balls and raise the first thing you catch to 6.) i probably failed on those more times than i'm remembering, but i had 3 or 4 runs that went up to at least several gyms. i remember that i lost twice to flannery's torkoal. that mf is a real mf in emerald!! spoiler alert there i guess lol. i also tried it in leaf green and succeeded on the first run, i think, or it didnt take very many tries anyway. emerald is probably a good deal harder with these rules, but also i had more experience in playing this way, so idk. in my successful run, by the time i was on the champion, i only had two pokemon left -- armaldo and shiny butterfree. armaldo is s-tier in my experience because his ability battle armor prevents critical hits, which is huge, since every attack has a base 7.5% chance of critting and that can really bone you over. plus lots of attacks and abilities increase crit chance, so it negates a lot of risk. he's also generally tanky and not weak to very many types as a bug/rock, and has pretty high attack. plus when you get him as an anorith from a fossil he's already level 20 or 25 which is higher than most wild things -- as a result you dont need to invest much exp in him to get him up to reasonable fighting level, and exp is a precious resource with these rules.
shiny butterfree's survival was pretty lucky -- butterfree has compoundeyes, which reduces your miss chance, meaning that sleep powder's 75% accuracy is boosted to 87.5%. that's pretty good, but its not THAT certain, and butterfree is pretty fragile and is weak to a lot of types. there were at least 2 or 3 times where my only choice was to send in shiny butterfree and use sleep powder, against something that was definitely going to use rock slide and murder the hell out of me if sleep powder missed. armaldo is weak to rock, because he's bug/rock, and rock doesn't resist rock, oddly. so rock type attacks were kind of my achilles heel. but on those 2 or 3 times where my only choice was to try for a sleep powder hit with shiny butterfree, it worked every time. thats not that unlikely - 87.5% chance three times is 0.875^3 which is ~0.67, so about a two-thirds chance of surviving all three attempts. however, there was one time where sleep powder missed -- and i thought everything was over.BUT ROCK SLIDE ALSO MISSED. rock slide only has 75% accuracy, so again, not thaaat crazy. but pretty crazy!and of course, the chance of getting a shiny pokemon is only 1 in 8000. ive only found 3 in my life, and ive played a lot of pokemon. beedrill once in my original silver as a kid, flaafy once in heart gold when i was a teen (scared my mom shouting holy fuck in the car), and then this hero as a caterpie. (there may have been others i didnt notice -- some shinies are only subtly different colors, and if you have the sound off and don't see the special twinkle animation, its not that hard to miss one. but anyway...ive never shiny hunted or used any of the techniques they added later to increase shiny chance, and 3 in a lifetime of playing a reasonable amount of pokemon is about what youd expect. but that this caterpie would survive an entire nuzlocke despite being pretty fragile, and despite being used as a last resort those times? pretty crazy!)

so thats how i beat the champion in my first successful butterspeed emerald run. (THE first butterspeed emerald run, unless someone else already invented the same ruleset and named it something else. but who cares really.)this did involve pp stalling surf on one of the champion's pokemon with armaldo -- that's where you just keep using a potion every turn after being hit, until the opponent runs out of pp for their move. this is considered cheesing by some people, but on the other hand, you have a fairly limited amount of money in this run, so you cant afford to do this very many times at all. i spent all my money on potions before entering the elite four and finished with only a few left. so it was pretty lucky also that i had kept just enough money for potions vs spending it on stat boost items like protein and iron -- and as it was, armaldo was barely able to survive even one surf, since he's weak to water...so it was also lucky that he was just high enough level to survive one super effective surf, and that his stat distribution gave him enough sp def and hp to survive one super effective surf. so it was pretty hard! if i hadnt gotten lucky on this run with butterfree and armaldo it might have taken a looot of tries to figure out which pokemon were best to use and who to put exp on when. i think i was also playing with a rule where the lowest level pokemon had to be sent out first, so that the levels of my pokemon would be generally even -- otherwise you could just put all your exp into one pokemon, and then that super strong one could probably sweep the elite four if it was like gyarados or something generally sturdy and strong. so having to evenly distribute your experience (more or less) makes it harder, and it also makes losing a pokemon really hurt, since you were putting precious exp into them.
so the rules (on top of usual nuzlocke rules) are:- no grinding (no re-fighting trainers or bopping wild pokemon)- lowest level pokemon must be first in party- starter pokemon must be put in pc as soon as possible -- first pokemon you catch is then to be leveled to starter's level at that time via grinding wild pokemon. now that i'm really thinking, i think it was actually that if the first thing in my party failed to run away from a wild pokemon, then i could try to fight it for exp. this was somewhat common since the first thing in my party had to be the lowest level. i think i also had a no exp share rule, since otherwise you could put exp share on something and then use a slow low-level thing in front to fail to run from wild pokemon and then fight them and give exp to other things via exp share. so i believe it was that if the first thing in my party failed to run, then i could fight it with that pokemon, but i couldnt heal my pokemon with items in that case, and if i had to switch out to something else because the wild one was beating mine, then i had to just run away. sooo the full rules are actually:- standard nuzlocke rules, PLUS- starter pokemon must be put in PC as soon as possible (first pokemon you caught is then to be raised to starter's level at that time via bopping wild pokemon)- no grinding by re-fighting trainers or bopping random wild pokemon- lowest-level pokemon in party must be first- if and only if the first and lowest-level pokemon fails to run vs a wild pokemon, that pokemon and that pokemon only can fight the wild pokemon. if that pokemon has to be switched out, or faints, successive pokemon sent out must only run. i think ALSO i didnt use the master ball (that would let you catch a powerful, high level legendary, which is pretty tough otherwise with these rules.) so that too.

it was a fun playstyle -- forces you to think hard and makes every fight tough, but does allow you to add newly caught pokemon and grind them against wilds for a little bit until they level up enough that they can run away the first time. (in theory you can get a good amount more levels on slow pokemon like graveler than on a fast pokemon before they can run from wild pokemon, so it incentivizes using slow pokemon, which is fun imo because they are used a lot less otherwise since moving first is such an advantage.) you also want to seek out absolutely every trainer in every corner to get all the exp you can before the elite four, and you also want to encounter your one wild pokemon in every possible area you can either to have more options for good pokemon or to get a bit of exp from fighting it. you also want all the items you can get of course, so it makes you explore the entire game world for every little advantage. this has some funny consequences such as once you get the super rod you want to go back and fish everywhere you havent encountered a pokemon yet -- the town areas often have ponds or shorelines that you can fish in, and theres no other way to encounter a wild pokemon in town. so once you get the super rod you have a little mission of fishing up something strong in every town to either use or bop for exp. i was playing on a gba emulator on my phone, which they have for iphone as well as android now -- i didnt use savestates or anything like that to cheat of course! playing on a real nintendo thing is nice but you can take screenshots on a phone which is fun. (i think i have more screenshots but theyre in my phone backups somewhere.) it was a good time and a good way to stop reading stupid things like 4chan on my phone and do something kinda fun instead when i was on the train or whatever. (this thread is a good use of time ofc but sometimes its slow and then i look at the catalog which isnt so good.) highly recommendede!!!!
