It's more important if you are transmitting as if your resonance is off, your current will be sent back to the radio. Idealy: try not to be above 2. There are a lot of factors that can affect it. To quote another ham: everything affects everything with antennas.

Also, they help with common mode currents. Though if you are not transmitting, it won't really be much of a factor.

Your salvage ferrites should work. There are different types which you woukd know about since you are into electronics. But the concept used to reduce noise and any other interference coming in is the same.

If you are interested, there is a /ham/ general on /diy/ that has a lot of good info. There are a few posters that know a lot. The one most knowledgable though is easy to troll if you want to shitpost a little. You should have seen the meltdown over radarfag.

Rockstar games have always had such an unappealing bloat to the controls and interactions. It makes sense you might have trouble as a first time player.

The vnas do have that capability. It requires some menuing and settings adjustments, but many hams are switching to them for a reason. It can be a major hobby to get into. I remember someone in his radio club when they were at our house doing an event saying it is the hobby with a thousand hobbies. There are kits available for people to put togther themselves. My dad got one recently, put it together, and is now doing some data mode stuff on it. I think it's called FT8.

I think it's something you would really really enjoy doing since you are really into that stuff.

I use the basics of a Smith chart to measure some components because they are either unlabeled or their value isn't what is listed at the frequency I am using it at. It's been a neat little tool but I haven't fully utilized it. I'm enjoying things so far just trying to get into the technical side of things since I'm not really a ham operator but radio communication does touch into a lot of stuff ham operators use. Plus I can finally use some parts I've been collecting over the years. I need to figure out lsb and usb more. Most signals I've seen so far are either AM or FM. But I'm thinking it's because my antenna wasn't suited for the job. The one I made is better but I think I'm still missing out on a lot so might have to make another even larger one. But I'm limited on my connectors. Need more. Hate being so limited. Hope I find work soon. So much to experiment with and I can't do it all yet.

AM and FM are just modulation types. LSB and USB are just using the lower or upper half of the AM signal. Your antenna doesn't matter as long as it can receive. It won't differentiate between modulation types. Your sdr software should have the option. The longer one will help you received the lower frequencies like in 80m and 40m bands. However, those bands are better at night time, whereas bands like 20m and up are more active during the day time. My dad's 40m still receives on 80m though. His main one though is his trapped dipole, but it sometimes requires him using his ATU to transmit with a SWR of 1. A trapped dipole maybe a good option for you if want to look into a multiband antenna.

I cannot afford anything right now. I've just been putting things together with stuff I have salvaged over the years. I need more SMA connectors as I used one from a board I assembled so I could make the antenna. On another note I heard a bunch of truckers on several different channels. Was able to book mark the frequencies. Also I think I can determine FM and AM from the spectra water fall. One of the truckers mentioned something about weak heros. Not sure what he was talking about as much of what he said was too fuzzy to understand. Feels like I am playing voices of the void in real life.

Also managed to get an interview. Another temp agency thing but it is a soldering job and above minimum wage so I'm excited for it.
